Salary Cap: 24-25 Salary Thread Crosbicles Volume MXVI: End of season wrap up

They can have their first and another piece if they throw in Lafreniere. :naughty:

Actually nvm, would still want to lottery protect it lol

Lafreniere, yes.

K'Andre Miller, absolutely not.

He blows. Why pay a fortune for that?

I'd rather bring back Gryz (idiotic though that would be). At least Gryz would be a lot cheaper and he has one useful skill, albeit one which is evident only on the power play.

I think Karlsson is moved before or during the draft.

I honestly don't think Crosby, Malkin, Rust or Letang are going anywhere. I also think we're stuck with Graves and Jarry for the time being. I wouldn't be shocked if Rakell is on the team in October as well.

I think they're shooting for the quick rebuild model. Guys like McGroarty, Koivunen, Tomasino and Ponomarev should fill out the forwards. Timmins was impressive last season and should be up with the team next season as well. That leaves a few spots open in the bottom-six.

Karlsson will be moved July 1 or later. His salary and total cost - not cap hit - go down substantially when a scheduled bonus is paid out on July 1. Teams will be more interested when they don't have to account for that in their actual finances.

If Rust/Rakell are traded, it'll be before or during the draft.

Amazing, the players are complacent yet are continually trotted out to slaughter by a coach who doesn't believe in doing anything more than rolling lines and taking days off from practice.

Last fall, the team came out and shit the bed after the worst prepared training camp I've ever seen them come out of. There was zero focus on defense, and implementing a system, and this with a new defensive coach coming in. They literally used the first 20 games of the season to try out different pairings. It was so bad that Petterssons best defensive move was the slow slide out of frame while the forward waited for a clear shot on net.

The players are complacent, but it's because they have a coach that can no longer push them to any other level that what they bring themselves.

If you lose a Mike Sullivan you’re looking for a Mike Sullivan.

If you lose a Kyle Dubas you’re looking for someone that can bullshit like Kyle Dubas.

Go listen to an interview with Patrick or Carberry about their team and the difference will literally shock you.

This is all good news in my books. Add in a Karlsson trade and hopefully a Rakell trade (and pray that "consistent wingers" for Malkin = a mix of Koivunen, McGroarty, and a filler UFA signing like Brandon Saad) and we should be in a good spot to draft high next year - hopefully #1 but at least get a star prospect.

Wait a second, did he actually say that last thing?
He seemed honestly annoyed with Karlsson. Like someone mentioned Karlsson likes being in Pittsburgh and he chuckled, and implied he needs to start playing like it then.

DK and Taylor Haase did a live stream and revealed as well whenever Dubas is yelling explitaves at players from the press box, 80% of the time it's at Karlsson.

I've changed my mind and now think it's pretty likely EK is moved this summer. They're going to roll Letang, Timmins, Brunicke/St Ivany and throw assets at LD. Dubas talked about trading for players or for RFA rights from teams that can't keep their young guys. Nick Hague is coming to the Pens baby. I'd even be open to bringing back Grzelcyk if Karlsson is gone.

Hague Letang
Grzelcyk Timmins
Pickering Brunicke
Graves Shea

Would be no worse than this season, and has players playing their way into more prominent roles.

Hague makes zero sense to me. He's 26, old for an RFA. He doesn't really solve any of our issues, and he's a 4/5 type.

I really really think it's Byram.

EK to Carolina seems like the most sense given Tulsky, the fact EK’s actual salary drops hard and that they need a Burns replacement.

Would be scared about Dubas’ history there in terms of trades given Marleau and Guentzel.
I don't think it matters a whole lot what they get back for EK tbh. Trading him is gonna make their entire right side a complete joke which if you want McKenna is probably a good thing. So might be addition by subtraction there.

Gonna love to read the Athletic articles where Yohe endlessly praises EK's replacement and it will probably just some boring defensive guy who treats the puck like a hand grenade. But the media will love them because they "play the right way".

Quick rebuild/retool.................

....................................by trading EK?

Gong show org.

That's the reality, it's not going to be a quick rebuild/retool. The sooner people realize that, the easier it will be to accept.

Dubas didn't mention once the idea of making the team competitive again before Crosby retires. He just says they "urgently" want to get back to contending, but everything he has said has suggested it's a long-term rebuild/retool that Karlsson will be long gone from by the time they're ready to contend again. He only has 2 years left on his deal and I can't really see any reason why he'd want to re-sign here.

Tree branches here...but that's fine.

It's stupid not to trade everything with 'real' value if that's the case though. Summer will tell. But if you trade EK - and NOT Rust+Rakell - that's just flat out bad asset management.

But yeah, plenty of people are alluding a Summer turnaround....that can not be the case if EK is your primary trade bait. The already bad defense, and already awful offensive production will tumble fiercely without EK...and that's before we consider more mileage on our only source of production.

Frankly, I think the front office is bipolar. I fail to believe that they actually want to tear it down. They're delusional. If they want to be competitive you have to gain/trade pieces that make sense. If you want to rebuild, then sell things that have value. The third option? Who actually actively seeks? That third option is: "We want to miss WC2 each year going forward by a few points because we just love drafting 8-14th. But maybe we get lucky one year and land WC2 to be trounced in the first round!" No front office ever targets option 3....but that's what this one is actively doing.

What would Byram cost? Can't see Sabres trading him for futures.
I don't understand that either. Hasn't Buffalo stated they want roster player trades only? So are you going to trade Rust there because he has no trade protections? Obviously Karlsson blocks there and wouldn't be surprised if Rakell did too. And Pittsburgh has no other vet roster players of value that will be considered to move.

Rust is more of a piece that makes sense for: EDM, LA, Dallas, Toronto, Ottawa. Chicago if not playoff team.

No chance he's a target for Buffalo.
