I dunno. If I remove all the nostalgia he looks like a guy that is like months away from being where you describe at least at the NHL level.

I love the guy but he's just beat and never adjusted his game much to account for age like I had hoped he would. There just isn't much there to work with, now. I hate to even say it but honestly if there is a team next year who would give up something for him at the deadline as a like... Perry-esque potential addition to that team's run I'd probably just take it at this point. I feel like Malkin isn't building his legacy here anymore... only diminishing it.

He's putting up elite passing metrics. He was on pace for 66 pts last year.

I don't really get the issue with Malkin. If you play him with top tier wingers like Sid, I'm sure he'll be fine. His production also fell off because they took him off the PP.

Blaming Malkin for Mike Sullivan is interesting.

The image of Sid and Malkin retiring the same game is well worth re-signing him if he wants to continue to play for us.

Idk showing Malkin is 52nd percentile offensive, 4th percentile defensive, 64th percentile on the PP and 53rd percentile finishing doesn’t seem like all that good of a player? Like he’s not shot but he’s a middle-6 caliber player that should be playing wing at this point.

This place gets super touchy about Malkin and I don’t get it. He’s a franchise legend, but he has taken a pretty massive step back into just an okay 2nd line caliber guy and he’s only going to get worse. It seems like some people interpret acknowledging that reality as “scapegoating” Malkin.

Those numbers kinda suck lol

I absolutely regret how Malkin was handled in the past by Mike Sullivan and the team. It's bad enough to treat the guy like the third fiddle in the media and on lists and such but to actively ignore him for years, play him with an ever-worsening cast of flotsam and jetsam as he ages AND blame him out on the ice as well was just shitty. But it is what it is here in 2025 and I can only be mad/frustrated at what WASN'T done because at this point it's just too late.

In other words I'd be maybe a little excited to see what's up if this was like three seasons ago but it isn't so I guess I don't much care. Take the second round pick or whatever. It's the cool and smart thing to do these days.

I'm getting confused if Malkin sucks so bad that they need to put him out to pasture or he's still good enough that contenders will be calling the Pens about him.

But sure, if they trade him, Geno has to sign off on it. If it's OK with Geno, it should be OK for us. There are very few players that earn the right to call the shots. Geno's one of 'em. Sid's another. Rust, obviously. That's about it, though.

66 pts is what Dubois just put up in Washington on a team that finished 2nd in the league.

Granted, Dubois has much heavier defensive impact, but I feel like this is just being pouty because Sid and Ovechkin are still producing at elite levels.

Malkin is still an effective NHLer. I don't really see any issue with him playing out this year and next and it probably gets him to 1400 pts.

No one should take any surprise from what the analytics say. An aging player who doesn't have that fastball anymore where he can necessarily drive play by himself but can still be an elite top 6 playmaker if he had linemates who didn't logo snipe every pass he gives them.

So yeah there's value there. But to the counterpoint, doubtful whether he can leverage it here.

He just scored 50 last season?

You're being so dramatic.

Hey you said it not me!

It's all good man I can tell your heart isn't in this one and you know I'm right.

Honestly I'm ambivalent about trying to move him at the deadline. Right now the goal is to be bad and as of last year he has begun to help in that regard and will only get better at it moving forward so I'm cool with that outcome, too.

Malkin randomly putting up another 60 pts next season would not shock me in the slightest.

If that means his careers over, sure you're right.

I am going to assume they will do the right thing and let him ride the ship for another year if he wants. Regardless of what writers and analysts say, he is part of the core (Crosby, Malkin, and Letang). He has definitely taken a step back in production than what we are used to seeing but he's still putting up a 60 point pace at age 38. Players like Rossi (who everyone wants on this forum), Hertl, Zibanejad, Huberdeau, Fiala... these guys are all between 23-32 putting up the same points. Most of them on the top lines with the best wingers. I think the hype of trading or letting him walk etc is a bit over-exaggerated. Even though Malkin is overshadowed by Crosby and even Letang at some points during his career, he is still a huge part of this organization and deserves to finish how he wants. I am willing to bet that if he decides this is his last year, he will be playing over in Russia next year or he takes 1 year deals to retire with Crosby. Letang is another story, I could see him being traded in his last year to go play with the Canadiens (per his request). Other than that, I think he will retire with the pens as well as long as his health doesnt affect him

If anything, I'm hoping Geno retires cuz I'd rather lose out on a bonus year of him plodding around for the Sid retirement tour than watch him continue to erode on the ice.

But if he wants to stick around, it doesn't matter. It's clearly a sentimental decision but it is what it is. The real important thing is that it doesn't affect the tank and rebuild.

Nah man honestly it would help.

Plus he can "help with the young guys" or something.

But we ARE talking the possibility of a second round pick here, Dummy. A real, live second round pick.

As someone who is younger literally ALL I know about Bourque is that he won a cup for Colorado and not in 40 years of playing for the Bs

Pass on moving Malkin.

I was gonna say... while I am someone who is NOT younger the first thing that pops into my mind re: Bourque is absolutely not him on the Bruins but him lifting the Cup in an Avs uniform. So this idea that it has zero bearing on a player's legacy is not accurate IMO.

EDIT: Also Bourque had almost 60 points in his last season in the NHL? TIL. Damn. I wish all legends could say the same, eh?

It's still funny to me that Colorado retired his number.

He played there one full season, yes, he won a Cup, but really?
