This is what we have going into 2025-26 before the deadline:

Rakell-Crosby-Rust
???-Malkin-Tomasino (RFA)
Heinen-Novak-Glass (RFA)
Lizotte-Hayes-Acciari
Bemstrom (RFA)

???-Karlsson
Pickering-Letang
Kolyachonok-Schenn
Graves

Nedeljkovic
Jarry

Not a lot of opportunities for the prospects at this time. We have to make more moves before the deadline.

Bemstrom is UFA.

I'd like Ponomarev to not look like absolute crap in the NHL before I'm putting him with Malkin

I've been really discouraged with what he has shown so far in the bit he's been in the NHL.

I'd like to give him a shot to figure it out at the NHL level before he needs waivers next season. He's gonna look like crap if he's been flanked by Acciari and Nieto.

I’m not his biggest fan but yeah, that same with a bunch of younger guys they call up. It’s hard to do much with 9 minutes a night playing with guys who’s games are predicated on low risk, talentless hockey.

If he's going to make it in the NHL, it's going to be as a bottom-6 player. If he can't show to be capable of playing in that role, he's not going to cut it in the NHL.

That doesn't mean play him with shit like Acciari and Nieto, but you don't just play him with Malkin either. Play him on the 4th line with Glass and Lizotte, if he doesn't cut it in that role he's not going to cut it in the NHL.

Guess it depends who we still have post deadline. I guess they may plan on using Novak with Geno but if the options ae Heinen, Hayes or Bemstrom then I'd give Ponomarev a 5-10 game run with Geno.

My only concern with that is I think you need a physical guy if Novak and Malkin are going to be playing together. I'm not sure I like the mix of something like Malkin-Novak-Koivunen.

Ideally you have a Kunitz type of guy and run with something like Kunitz-Novak-Malkin.
McGroarty?

Look Sullivan will need to go. He is just not a coach who brings the juice or want to like he did in 2016. I think teams can't trade coaches but if the Pens could, A nice return would be great. I sense Dubas and Spezza brought in the WB coach for bigger plans.

Puckpedia has him as an RFA. He might be one of those guys in the grey area.
There are no grey areas on free agent status. He is UFA. Penguins didn't offer him a qualifying offer last off season there by making him a UFA and removing all RFA restrictions on the player, then signed him as a free agent. He is UFA after this season.

What about age? Players can still be RFAs until age 27, regardless of whether or not they are not qualified. It sounds nonsensical but I do believe it happens.

The grey area is whether he is a Group 6 or not, which means UFA or RFA.

That was last year. He became a UFA and re-signed with us. But he is still under the age of 27, therefore he will be an RFA for one more year.

Either that or you are right and PuckPedia is wrong. Which is why I am unsure.

Without a ton of cap space the issues on this club aren't going away. The thought of "one more time w.Sid" - folks aren't putting the roster ahead of that conversation. Say we get a good start:

- Sully gets fired. Preferably the morning after we're officially out of the playoffs (aren't we already?)
- We land Marner in FA

Great...what about goaltending? Vodoo? Sure...what about our D corps? Still have an absolutely WEAK top 6 forward group WITH Marner. Top line? Sure - Geno-Sid-Marner will get her done. If they bring in a 2C and keep one of Raks/Rust - you have the makings of an acceptable albeit not overly thrilling second line. And that's where we drop off of a cliff.

I love the idea and hate how putrid and uninspiring this club has been. It's genuinely a chore to watch 80-90% of the games (being generous) - so the games I DO turn in to, often fall flat. I'd rather win, always. Just seems practically impossible going forward...and certainly in Sid's 1C window. I think part of this logic is why folks don't buy "trying to go in or load up one more time"....how exactly? If that were even remotely the case why wouldn't you have been in on the Tarasenko's of yesteryear, Hall, etc? Zero top 6 help in Dubas' tenure and the construction of the D corps is ultra bad. Good thing we have....some of the worst goaltending too.
