Salary Cap: '24-'25 Salary Thread: Crosbicles Volume MMXXVI: Sid is Still Goat

How is this stupid? The Pens got a Center who's 27 and costs 3.5M for 2 more seasons beyond this one. Novak scored 88 points in 122 games in the 2 seasons prior to this one. He might bounce back.
He could be a valuable trade asset later, one you can deal at 50% and get a sweet return.

Like what if he's pacing for 50 points next year in a 2C role? We can move Malkin to wing.
What does he command at that deadline?

Bunting did a great job on the PP, but at ES he wasn't getting it done.

There is no way Novak is an NHL 2C

Dude doesn't even have over 20 goals ever and he's 27 f***in years old

Letang would be a better 2C stopgap

In his last 2 years before this year, he averaged 59 points per 82 games.

Even if you want to look at purely last year, 18 goals and 45 points in 71 games is 2C production. It's definitely not anything special 2C production, but it's 2C production.

Dude. Just use Google. I shouldn’t have to do the research for you, just to stop you from propagating a lie.

Two from Jake's perspective, says in both articles that Jake wanted to resign here, and Dubas saw the team faltering and felt a trade better suited with out starting negotiations.

I also thought Jake wanted to test FA, and was obviously wrong

Seravalli might be the dumbest person in hockey media. I can't imagine why two bad teams would make a hockey trade in hopes of improving. He comprehends things at a 3rd-grade level.

Nor does he understand that the Penguins' two best and closest-to-NHL forward prospects are left wings and they have maybe one center prospect worth anything in Pono.

Feel free to talk about the all-around game as a center, but Novak isn't any worse offensively than Chytil who was acquired as the 2C centerpiece for Vancouver in the Miller deal. Since the trade, he has 6 points in 10 games playing 2C minutes.

I don't think Novak's upside is much higher than an offense only 50 point center, but that still is a 2C caliber player IMO.

Maybe. Not convinced of that yet.

In the 2-year block preceding this year, he paced 59 points per 82 played.
He averaged 14:25 TOI during this period. Malkin averages 18mins.
Also during those 2 years he had 175 mins less PP time than their top Forward (Forsberg).

So either this year is a sign of things to come or it's an outlier. Depends where you fall on that.

On top of that, Bunting didn't work with Geno. Maybe Novak will, plus he seems to have an iota of offensive ability, which Geno desperately needs... though I'm sure Sully will start him on line 4 for 15 games for "conditioning" or some nonsense lol

Doesn't everyone realize that only good teams have good players and bad teams have bad players, so if you want to get good you have to make trades with good teams?

Bad teams making trades with other bad teams is just stupid.... Gosh how don't people see this? I'm a genus

Seravalli hates Dubas, that's where it's really coming from. Like a personal level hate.

Do you know why? I've read this before but I can't find anything about why? Did he run over his dog or something? It's obvious, I just wonder if anything happened between them or if Seravalli just took an irrational stance

If it works out you have an offensive minded 2c/3c tweener locked up for 3.5 for 2 more years.

Basically what Bonino was when acquired, with higher point totals

Fingers crossed this team utilizes Novak properly, he pads his stats, and a year or two from now we're celebrating flipping the guy for a return like Granlund got.

There's also reports of the Pens offering Jake $8.5M AAV over six years in February 2024, and a radio interview where his agent, in January 2024, said "Could it get ugly? Yeah, it could."

I think the initial talks during the 2023 summer got off to a poor start, both sides realized how far apart they were with regard to both numbers and vision/direction of the team, and that was that. Dude wanted a colossal deal to stick with a dying franchise. Dubas rightfully didn't hand him a blank check just to inconvenience himself with having to trade an expensive paperweight with a full NMC once Sid retired in several years.

It was pretty clear that there was no reason to keep him aside from sentimental value, and Jake wanted to cash in *and* have a chance to compete for his final contract, the latter of which was never happening here and he (and Dubas) knew it.

it's not just Dubas. Frank called Sid out last year for skipping part of the ASG media availability.

i'll even do what intelligent people do, and provide a link! nothing lazier than saying something as fact and then going 'omg asking me to source my own comment! but i'm a lazy f***ing moron!"

I feel like it's been a thing since before Dubas hopped on board. It's probably a case of Seravalli pestering people for interviews and/or scoops and being told to f*** off in no uncertain terms because he's an annoying little weirdo, and of course he decided to make it his purpose to carry this vendetta against Dubas and/or the Pens because, well, he's an annoying little weirdo.

That is a man that definitely sits down to pee.
