Salary Cap: '24-'25 Salary Thread: Crosbicles Volume MMXXVI: Sid is Still Goat

I'll begin this post by saying that Sid is absolutely not going anywhere.

As an academic exercise though, what do you think he'd fetch in this insane sellers market? Something like two firsts, a second, a top prospect, a mid prospect, and maybe a lottery ticket player or two (or maybe some later round picks)?

Significantly less than what he's worth.

Sellers market doesn't mean anything if Crosby is deciding that he's only being traded to Coloardo. At that point, it's probably Mittelstadt, Ritchie and a 1st.

Define "good player with term left" that isn't Raks? That pretty much covers it for our tradeable assets that could actually move. Rust ain't going anywhere. They aren't going to hurt Josh Yohe's feelings like that.

But to answer your question: Yes those same people will complain whether Dubas does something or doesn't.

I would be way more involved as a fan if they just did this. Give Geno Sid - give Sid Geno. They're producing but it's painfully obvious on most nights how much MORE they would produce if they had someone like the other on their lines.

I'm not getting too spun up - what I hate is the fact this team SPENT, on junk. Like, leave cap and leverage or spend cap and compete. Hiring 21 Acciari's in the pipeline was.....well the brain tank here has found no other solution other than Sullivan....and why not? Who else would enter season after season with zero offense in the bottom 6?

That's before getting to the D corps and goaltending. Though, as much as I hated the Jarry signing my only complaint there is spending any money AT ALL because I'm pretty sure we could rotate fun ECHL goalies and get the same performance.
This has been my criticism of every GM since the end of JR’s tenure here. They’d make mistakes, they’d correct the mistakes, they’d get a ton of room (for a Penguins team, anyhow) and then immediately blow it all on above-market-value bottom-6 players who weren’t even special in any meaningful way other than “good PKer!!!!”

That’s one of the reasons I dislike most of the criticism levied against Dubas. Yeah he’s made some mistakes, but it’s the same stupid mistake 99% of all GMs make. I swear, if you could get past the whole “they’d never respect a nobody”, a lot of educated fans and a capologist would make a better FO than most of the old boys network.

Here’s the thing. I agree with you 100%. However, the penguins would have to get a real return to calm the fan base, and hockey is so hung up on their code, I genuinely believe the other team (especially if it’s sakic) will want to give a package in line with Sid’s status. I definitely think it’s like three pieces including a 1st and someone’s best prospect.

Dubas criticisms are justified, but I have no idea how anyone has convinced themselves that he would hang onto Rakell just to compete.

He traded the best winger Crosby ever had last year, who wanted to be here and would have re-signed for market value. He also traded Eller - who was playing very well at 3C for us early in the season, when we had no real replacement and the playoffs weren't an impossibility - because the offer was right.

There's criticizing and then there's just baseless muck-raking. He'll move Rakell if his price is met.

Of those, only Rakell and Bunting seem like it'd be easy to move by the deadline.

Letang/EK are too complicated to trade in season due to their contracts.

Rust has the NMC that Dubas refuses to ask him to waive

Sid/Geno would have to ask out, and that isn't happening

I’m just setting the boundaries. If anyone else is moved, it’s not all that meaningful to me. Like we’re not getting a significant return for anyone else.

One, you're never getting close to his value, even at age 37.

Two, the only way to get the maximum return - even recognizing it'll still fall short of his value - is to do it when there are the most number of potential suitors. That's not now, with everyone pressed up against the cap and trying to squeeze every last penny. Sid's not prohibitively expensive, but he still carries a decent cap hit.

So despite this being a major seller's market, it's the worst time to hypothetically trade a player like him. He's not Ray Bourque, trying to win that elusive Cup, so time isn't really of the essence either.

That makes this a draft day/offseason deal, when teams have more flexibility.

Also, any team he'd be hypothetically interested in would have to be a contender. So that diminishes the value of the first round picks, because they'd likely be late first rounders.

I think the haul has to be something like:
No. 1 prospect
No. 2 prospect
First round pick
Above average roster player

So, hypothetically, if it's Colorado then the haul includes Cal Ritchie, Mikhail Gulyayev, Casey Mittelstadt, and a first round pick.

Some will say that's too much. Some will say that's not enough. And that's why you don't trade Sid. No one will be happy.

Has Vrana ever not been productive?
2016-17 and 2023-24 were pretty poor. Low game count samples in both years. Apart from that, solid.
He shouldn't even be on waivers. His offense has been strong and he's barely getting scored on. Strange that he can't even average more than 10 mins TOI and has only gotten 26 games.

Coaches really hate this guy for some reason.
