Salary Cap: '24-'25 Salary Thread: Crosbicles Volume MMXXV - Poolman and Poolparty?!?

Bemstrom has no value at the NHL level. He's played 229 NHL games. He is who he is.
Oh I agree. I was just answering a question about us showcasing Bemstrom. Personally, I have seen enough. 52 is a nice depth winger to have in the organization but he definitely is what he is. There is no reason for him to be up instead of the two winger prospects that matter, but whatever.

At least Ponomarev got recalled today. With that guy, there is no excuse. He is responsible, versatile, a PKer. Just play him FFS.

Yup. I liked Jesse. I'd rather see him in the lineup than Nieto or Imama. But every team had a chance to pick him up for free and no one did. So for one reason or another, there must be something that NHL teams don't like about his game, even though he seems to be moving well post surgery.
Yes, it's called roster size and waiver requirements. Teams are at roster limits and would need to waive players to open a spot for him.

The Penguins have that issue because they're filling up their lineup with a bunch of shitty waiver eligible players, but plenty of other teams have waiver exempt players that could be demoted if someone saw something in Puljujarvi.

He didn't get claimed because no one sees anything in him, hence why he's going to Europe.

Tell me more. Is he an NHL player?

He was ranked 14th in Florida's system before being moved to Arizona in 2021, with this write-up from Wheeler:

Kolyachonok’s biggest attribute is his skating, which he uses to close gaps, pivot on dumped in pucks, and to attack off the line to use his heavy shot from the high slot. Defensively, Kolyachonok plays an aggressive style, relying more on the timing of his reads than on maintaining sound positioning. Offensively, he looks to attack when the spacing is there and outlets the puck effectively when it isn’t.

Definitely a worthwhile gamble with how depleted the Penguins are on LD, but he's probably just another POJ type of guy.

This is purely stat watching, but Koyla seems like he had a really solid season with the Coyotes as a 20 year old back in 2021-2022. It wasn't anything spectacular, but playing 16 minutes a night with good analytics (+6.78% xGF%Rel) and a neutral +/- on a horrid Coyotes team looks pretty good to me. I don't mean to use +/- as if it's a stat that means anything, but if you're at a +0 in 32 games when your team had a -103 goal differential over the full season looks pretty impressive to me. Especially out of a 20 year old rookie defenseman.

Good chance they'll be running POJ/Kolya/Graves on the leftside after the deadline. Gonna be fun watching that lol

Honestly it's exactly what they should be doing. Try out these dart board throws and see if anything sticks.

I just wish Sullivan would also do that with the forward group, rather than bury them in defensive usage with 10 minutes a night.

He had a sick goal against the Bruins earlier this year as well. I think Kolya is the exact kind of long shot moves this team needs to be making to see if something sticks. Take a chance on someone with intriguing stats/skills (which I think he has both) stuck in a numbers game and see if anything pans out. They have plenty of opportunities to give him a chance for the rest of the year to see if he can be anything as a NHLer, even if it's just a #6 guy or so.

Worst case scenario is that he doesn't pan out and you end up having another young defenseman in WBS as depth next year.

He was playing minutes over Dumba last year in Arizona when Dumba was struggling.

I think he has potential to be something. Not anything special, but I'd take him over POJ, Shea and Graves.

It's an odd claim if Dubas does not have any defensive trades lined up. Possible it's a replacement only to send Shea to WBS to help bolster the WBS defense at worst. Scouting report looks positive though. Sounds like Gryz-lite which is fine by me.

When does the roster freeze for 4 Nations? I expected a bit of activity with all of the rumors. Possible teams are just positioning themselves for the moves right now though, more or less narrowing their scope to a few specific targets.

One note - I have really appreciated Beauvillier's game in the last 3-4 games. He's starting to become a lot more noticeable at the right time. Playing like a guy who wants to get traded to a contender and get a new deal.

I don't think it is. The management and coachign staff obviously thinks very, very little of Ryan Graves.

Grz is probably gone for a third on deadline day. The D market is super thin this year

From a pure roster numbers POV, it is.

POJ-Letang
Gryz-Karlsson
Graves-Desharnais
Pickering-Shea

That's a solid 7 up and 1 in WBS. Can't see why it would be necessary to carry 8 NHL dmen without someone going somewhere.

Yeah, that would make an incredible amount of sense with a couple teams saying their keeping their guys. Columbus being in the mix now throws a wrench into availability. Obviously Provorov isn't available anymore and they could even look to add. Savard and Dumo are about the only decent options left unless you want to add Cole and Maatta from Utah or Rutta in SJ. Then there's some odd ones like Dumba, Barrie, or Martinez but I'm not sure what kind of value those guys really have.

Soucy being available will help the Canucks recoup a few assets. I imagine he goes for a 2nd or a 3rd+4th. His value wasn't much behind Pettersson.

So yeah, I could see Gryz getting a lot of attention especially if there's a retention slot being used or if Dubas is willing to take cap back for extra assets. That all said, I haven't really evaluated the potential dmen that have multiple years left (1 or more) to see if teams might be more comfortable taking on extra cap next year with the cap going up so much. It makes a move like Deharnais for a 7th a little more palatable if you really want to bolster that 6/7 slot.

Successful season if they manage to trade Rakell and Gryz for profit at the TDL imo. Not pretty, not fun, but what needs to be done. Gotta strike while the iron's hot with Rakell imo, nearing a must move territory. Teams are always looking for depth scoring for a playoff push and between his season and his style, somebody will give up a good return.
