On the Pens he was a number #3 without question. Had they had a true #2 he would be a #4.

Considering both Letang and Karlsson are on the same side.
I don’t think that means much for most teams. He’s a solid second pairing guy simply just because he’s okay as far as mobility goes but as he loses a step l he’s got nothing else to go on.

I don’t think he’s the most solid part of a pairing ever, which why I’d but him as 4/5 kinda guy.

What's the brain trust here believe the next move is?

EK, Rakell, depth?

I'd like to see some sort of random big move to secure our 2C going forward - get it locked in, then sell pieces. That or grab another big defenseman to get that group more and more seasoned together. I'd look at the next part of the season as an opportunity to get 25 games in towards next years' team rather than just letting it fade away into obscurity for no reason.

Probably selling off Beauvillier for a 4th. I think their big moves are already done with the Pettersson/DOC deal.

Honestly I have a feeling they keep Grzelcyk beyond the deadline just based on not having any other LD capable of eating minutes. They seem to want Pickering to spend the rest of the year in WBS and there really aren't any other LD options beyond on the NHL team.

I hope you're wrong, if a team comes calling, trade him. Get whatever you can for him. He has been decent as of late. If not, they will probably extend him. Pick up a body off waivers to take his place if traded, problem solved.

I've....been okay(?) with Grz over the past dozen games.

Beauvillier had the worst overtime I've ever witnessed against the devils. Lazy, insignificant, error riddled. Other than that he's been whatever. Certainly has come in well below expectations - at a Graves level but without the big contract.

You don't see the EK trade happening this year? Frankly I don't even care if we sell him at this point with all the cap news. And what of Rakell? Hold until Summer and hope that teams who miss out on whatever look at his cap and get hungry? I feel the logic here is sort of scary as it leaves our team utterly putrid next year (as the Rakell move would be post-FA in this scenario and leave us even worse in the top 6 around August).

I don't think the Penguins are in a rush to sell any of these guys, unless they get a crazy offer for them. The thing with trading EK is that you could possibly get better value for him by waiting than trading him now, since the cap will be rising more, Karlsson will have less term and Karlsson could go on a hot run to increase interest.

Rakell should 100% be traded this off-season, they should sell high on him. Beyond him, I'm not seeing anyone that is a "trade immediately" type of guy. By mid year next year, I'd like to see McGroarty as Crosby's LW and Koivunen as Malkin's RW.

Rust's NMC falls off this Summer. He could definitely have value everywhere on the 'now' cheap deal. A legend here, sure, but - new era. Definitely increases if a roster spot opens on USA and he performs there. I think he and Rakell should have significant interest at the deadline and the Summer.

Karlsson is a weird one to me. I don't know if the value isn't already there. They know the cap is rising so if I team could fit him in for their run today + going forward perhaps they call on it. We can easily take back salary this go-round so there's no real pressure to wait for the Summer....compared to most years where we have spent every last dime.

I think there is almost zero chance Rust gets traded before Crosby retires. They’ll let Crosby finish up his career with his preferred winger then they’ll trade him to whatever contender wants some veteran leadership out of their 2nd line.

around the time the trade was made, there were non-Penguins people saying he was a #2.

Yeah, and people thought Alexandre Daigle was going to be the next Gretzky. Hockey people love being wrong as much as they love hockey.

yay.

Friedman’s 32 thoughts had 2 points about the Penguins, one about them possibly flipping the Rangers 1st and one about Rakell in Winnipeg. The Rakell point seemed to be speculation more than anything though.

Imagine Detroit comes calling with a 1st and a good prospect for Rust. Dubas tells him he can go there now or risk someone else being the highest bidder in July. I have a hard time seeing either Rust or Dubas saying no to that scenario.

Tell Sid you're ready to give Rantanen and/or Marner a dump truck full of money so he's got a nice new toy to look forward too.

I mean yeah at that point Rust will be traded

I just think under any reasonable circumstance, he'll stay until Crosby retires.

If done right, the timeline could be 26/27 for competing again. Dubas moving Rakell and Karlsson would bring much needed assets, then it comes down to scouting and hiring a new coach with a different mindset.

I think Bunting at 50% retention nets something decent.

I'm reasonably certain that that reasonable trade offer is, reasonable.

Perhaps it's not likely.

Rust's got what, 2 years..3 years left? At 5M he's definitely an asset. Freaking middling 3rd/4th liners are going to be making that money during his deal. If not next year, certainly the year after. Rust also has going for him what many top 6 forwards do not: versatility and cup experience (and proven clutchness). So many forwards seem to get that check cashed for 5-7M who can literally only produce. In fairness to Rust - he can seemingly do that on any of the four lines, while pking, while playing decent defense for a forward. So yeah - for 5M I think a 1st is not at all out of the question - especially with the rising cap.

I think Bunting at 50% retention nets something decent.
Don't you tempt me with a good time, buddy.

That guy...holy smokes. I'd have rather shipped him off than DOC in that Vancouver deal....and I was NEVER big on DOC. But, as a bottom 6 guy - DOC brings more to the table than Bunting has this year. He's been ass.
