The goal IMO should be to get as many picks/prospects possible this year and next to speed things up. I'm not saying ship out 5 veterans and have 5 rookies take their spots to start next season, money needs to be spent to replace some of the guys in the off season in UFA or via hockey trades..

Getting a ton of picks/prospects and maximizing on their play this year is what we should be focusing on. No one can guarantee that Rust, Rakell or any other player will have just as good as a year next season or the one after. They could easily end up like Jarry on waivers if you ask me or another Riley Smith with a 3rd or 4th round pick. That does nothing for our situation present and long term either. Move them now that the value could be at the highest it will ever be in the next 2-3 years!

Yeah that's exactly what I meant. I don't think you have to keep all of Rakell, Rust and Bunting, but you can't just trade all 3 and replace them solely with guys from WBS. You have to keep a balance there so you're not overwhelming the young guys and can support them.

If you're trading all of Rakell, Rust and Bunting, you're going to need to dip into UFA to sign guys to help support Crosby/Malkin and the young guys. You both don't have enough young guys and enough good young guys to do otherwise.

As an aside, if you trade Bunting this deadline for futures, I'd be supportive of re-signing Zucker to a short term, high AAV deal to be a veteran leader for the young guys. He really seemed to be loved in the locker room by the Penguins and his good work ethic should be a positive for the young guys. Once his deal is about to expire, retain half of it and sell him for more picks and prospects.

Honestly, I'm not sure if there is a person on the roster (sans Sid and Geno) that I wouldn't be willing to trade if there's a deal to be made. I'm just at this weird juncture where I both do and don't want to trade guys and I think a lot of it has to do with how well (or rather NOT well) guys like Glass and Tomasino have worked out. They aren't bad but neither are moving the needle for us and they are taking up slots.

I would imagine in any Rakell, Bunting, or Rust deal we are taking back a player, probably for cap reasons. Is having a player the other team is willing to trade truly beneficial for us? Unless a team is willing to do futures only or the roster player is actually good, I'm not sure that waiting until they are UFAs isn't the best route.

I'd be all for more Ponos, Koivunens, and Pickerings. Less so on more Glass, Tomasinos, Puljujarvis, etc.
 
With the Jackets holding a wild card spot now, they might decide to just keep Provorov in the hopes of going on a run. That would immediately remove one of the top D available on the market. That basically just leaves MP and then guys like Savard, Gryz, Ceci as options

Folks are reporting that the Jackets have had serious talks about landing EP40 from the Canucks.

It'd be hilarious for that Canucks team to go from one win away from playing in the SCF to having dealt both EP40 and JT Miller in the span of like 12-18 months. :laugh:

Reports out of Montreal are saying that due to Ghule's injury, the Habs might hang on to Savard for the rest of the season. That would be amazing to be honest, would drive the price higher for MP

The direction I want Dubas to take almost entirely depends on what they are going to do with Sullivan.

If he's a dead man walking, I'm very open to the idea of taking a run at one of the big time FA and filling in the roster with the McGroarty's, Koivunen's, Broz's, Pono's, Brunicke's, etc. Some new blood with a new vision. Probably not good enough to actually do anything, but it could at least be fun.

If they are adamant that he's the guy...burn it down. Outside of Sid and Geno, trade everyone they can if they can get a decent return. I'm not at all worried about having too many young guys. They can sign some vets in FA and they are probably going to have to take some contracts back in those trades anyway.

Philly being run by idiots doesn’t mean anything for Rakell’s potential return.

Also Farabee has 19 points in 50 games this year. Rakell has both more goals and more assists than Farabee has points.

Seriously, no f***ing idea what the Flyers are thinking here. I'm assuming they're going to flip Kuzmenko at the deadline, they won't get much but whatever they don't need him. After signing Pelletier, they will have saved about 6+ million off the cap, maybe they're planning to go hard after Marner in the summer?
 
I don't see why this is complicated. If Rakell is being traded, they'll get a multi-year contract back (someone like Hartman from the Wild) and get futures on top of that. If they would need to retain money to move Rakell, they'll just keep him and let him keep playing with Crosby.

If Rakell's term/age is a dealbreaker for moving him without retention, just trade Bunting (who would be much easier to move if term/age is a problem) and keep Rakell. Go with a top-6 of McGroarty-Crosby-Rakell and Koivunen-Malkin-Rust for next year.
