I had to take a peak at Shearys contract. Bury it in AHL and only take 700k cap hit?

2.5 million for most likely a low end 1st and low end 2nd. Hmmm.

I'd hate to help Tampa but maybe a 2027 1st and the lower of the two Kings / Leafs pick? If not allowed I lean Kings.

I'd almost want more a 2.5 million 50 point player is worth a lot.

Rakell getting more than a 1st and a 2nd is insane. We should take that and run.

Yeah I'd be pretty thrilled with that return.

I think Dubas is going to hold onto Sids wingers sadly. They need to stop worrying about offending Sid and just sell him on the rebuild. They're 6th worst with Sid so it's not like holding onto his wingers is doing him or the team any good.

Just wait and see what we get back for EK at 50%...lol

Difference is they can't trade EK at full salary while they likely can trade Rakell at full salary.

Using a retention slot on Rakell doesn't make sense because the difference between retention and no retention won't give you a return that's worth doing it. You could likely get a cap dump, 2nd rounder and B prospect for Rakell at full salary, retaining money to turn that 2nd into a 1st isn't worth it.

It's not the length of cap retention that I have an issue with, I just don't think you'll get a return that justifies you using that retention slot.

Why can't they just target a deal like Ryan Hartman's in a Rakell trade and just get futures on top of that? Get another guy making fairly close money and get futures on top of that, rather than using a retention slot to not really get much better of an offer.

Using a retention slot on Rakell is a tough pill to swallow, but if the return is worth it, go for it.

I'd rather use the retention spots to maximize returns on guys like Rakell, Karlsson, whoever else than to get out of contracts like Jarry, Graves, and Hayes.

Why? the Pens are going to be terrible for at least that long anyways
Would rather have the extra slot for 4 years of TDL cap retention moves than squeeze a little bit more out of a Rakell deal, unless the return is worth it (I suggested Jack Quinn).

I tend to think of it as potentially two 2nds and two 3rds over 4 years vs moving up 20 slots in the draft one time.

I mean you can say this. But I don't think this happens. I don't think anyone touches that contract at full value. I'd rather just retain.

Also acting like it's 4 years is weird. It's this year and 3 more.

4 years of cap retention is too long.

Is a 1st + 2nd great for Rakell 💯 .

Locking up a retention spot for 3.5 seasons and taking 2x2 cap dump.

Now that's where the problem lays.

We only have 1 this year and next year we have 2 to 3. Karlsson forces us to use one.

So that means for this year we have 0
Next year we only have 1 if we retain on both.

Do we want 2 retention spots locked in for 2 and 3.5 years?

I'm of the school of thought that we should keep EK65.

I'm also of the school of thought that Rakell and Rust's contracts are tiking time bombs. If we have to retain to get out of them. Do it, especially if your'e getting a 1st and a 2nd.

Grier took a similar approach with his team and look at how it benefitted him.

If we can push the 1st out to 2027 or even 2028 where I'd hope they slow down. I suppose 2 picks is worth it

I think the Pens can get a 2nd for Rakell straight up.

No guarantees that’s true. You can’t commit to be being bad for that long and if you keep your books clean you might not need to be.
Eh I don't think having that dead cap space would totally cripple them either way. If the goal is to right the ship asap they need to consider risks like that.

Yeah I don't necessarily see the problem with holding onto EK and then just flipping him in his UFA year. I'm reasonably confident he'll continue to hold some level of value into the future.

I'm rather terrified of what happens to Rakell or Rust if we hold onto them too long. Rakell isn't fleet of foot to begin with. Rust gets lazier every year.

Strike while the iron is hot with those guys imo.

It’s not at all about $2.5mm dead it’s about only having 3 retention slots.
I mean, fair point, but the retention slots are there to be used. If you can figure out a better way to use 3 retention slots then I'm all ears but using one of them to grab a first+ sounds good to me.

My previous post just outlined that I’d rather make 4 separate TDL retention moves to net 4 extra picks rather than to increase Rakell’s value and move up 20 slots in a draft one time (assuming return is going from 2nd to 1st by retaining on him)
