Except with no skills at player evaluation.
I think it was you that pointed out Laine. Didn’t seem like we even entertained the idea but he was had for nothing. Those are the kind of moves you would think to see if we were trying to do a quick pivot.

There are opportunities out there that come up but we never seem willing to take risks or get creative.

For what it's worth, Haase has Nieto and Acciari rotating, not Lizotte.

Rickard Rakell - Sidney Crosby - Bryan Rust
Michael Bunting - Evgeni Malkin - Cody Glass
Anthony Beauvillier - Kevin Hayes - Phil Tomasino
Drew O’Connor - Blake Lizotte - Noel Acciari/Matt Nieto
But also, who really cares? People need to re-calibrate their understanding of Lizotte. He had a nice stretch when he came back and was shooting over 50%. That wasn't going to continue and now he hasn't recorded a point in 13 games. He's a lot more Acciari/Nieto than someone we should care about.

Our hope should be that they bring up some of the young guys and Lizotte is that 12/13th forward who rotates in and out of the lineup.

It's weird, right? It's almost like some super risk-adverse, zero-event jobber who has a chip on his shoulder regarding the usefulness of replacement-level players is informing all of their roster evaluation and acquisition decisions.

Yeah this is also true. I don't think the team got the most out of Lizotte when he was the hot hand but in the end I mean... this is likely closer to who he actually is.

I doubt they did consider him on the account of him "not being a Sullivan kind of player" and all.

That's the question I have. Why would Buffalo be buying and willing to give up NHL ready prospects?

Because Buffalo is asininely deep in their prospect pool and need actual NHL talent to help support the young guys.

A Sabres fan just posted this on that main board thread:

"Because we need more guys like Zucker, we need vets, we are the youngest team in the league and we don't have enough proven and experienced players. The kids are playing with each other in the lineup, they are inconsistent and we give them too big roles that they are not ready for."

Kulich? Rosén?

I’m not sure what Buffalo wants that Pittsburgh has. DOC? Rakell? Bunting?

Rakell or Bunting for Rosen seems to be the consensus on the main boards. Rosen was a recent #14 pick but I don't think he has a crazy upside that would prevent that deal from being possible.

There is no way I trade Rakell for Rosen. But Bunting for Rosen? Yeah, I could be down for that.

I think there is grounds for a bigger trade with Buffalo. People are confused as to why Buffalo would want veterans??? Has anyone watched the Sabres? This rebuild of theirs is going absolutely nowhere. And their GM is on his last legs. We absolutely should pounce on this opportunity.

Their blueline could use a shakeup as much as their forward group. Mattias Samuelsson is a player I would love to acquire. And then there is Byram, of course. Power would be scary because of that contract, but he does have talent.

And then Rochester has several intriguing players. Buffalo is a great trade partner.

I think the issue is I'm skeptical Buffalo would jump at Bunting for Rosen. Bunting is mostly just a PP guy this year and trading Rosen for him seems bad for Buffalo unless it's pretty much straight up. Granted Buffalo does have a bad powerplay this year but they also have Zucker and Tuch as guys who should be good net front guys.

That said, I think Rosen seems to be more of a Pickering/Koivunen caliber prospect so maybe I'm overvaluing him based on his draft position.

I can't decide if it's better for this team to target prospects who are a few years into their developmental cycle or picks. In years past I'd have said easily the former and not that latter but Dubas, for as much as I rag on him... does seem good at the draft table. Plus I mean... guys like Rosen are likely going to need to make the jump to the NHL level sooner rather than later, right? Does anyone actually like what is going on at the NHL level developmentally?

I would imagine that Rosen would immediately replace whichever of Bunting or Rakell they'd be trading for him. Outside of those two and MP, I don't see any other pieces in the organization that would be realistic in a trade there.

You know... as much as we've disagreed about hockey over the years I gotta say this, Emp... don't EVER lose your unflagging optimism.

Not usually motivated to defend Yohe, but he’s right - that fit is immaculate. The kind of drip only Stanley Cup/Art Ross/Hart/Conn Smythe winners have.

I think timing wise, picks are the only thing that makes sense. If we had just picked some up and coming gamebreaker or rebuild centerpiece, then you start thinking about guys like Rosen who are ready to make the jump.

Yeah I agree. In theory I like the idea of the value of a 14th overall or similar a few years post-draft but I have no faith in this team facilitating the development of those players by putting them in positions to succeed. Look at a guy like Toma. Dude should be getting top six minutes at this point all night every night but the illustrious coach seems to think he and Hayes are a thing on the third line for some reason.

We're just gonna see a lot more dumb bullshit like that until the coaching issue is solved. And that stands a better chance of happening a few years down the line when any potential draft pick is getting ready to make the jump as opposed to like... next month when that cretin will very much still be here.
