Well if we are assuming the premise of "ownership called/calls the shots with Sullivan" is true could it not be surmised that THEY insisted on signing him and not Hextall?

I don't begrudge people their money. But I'm not going to view KD favorably if he agreed to these terms. As it is a clear detriment to the team not to mention kind of a slap in the face to the fans and the core.

Looking at the goaltending class this summer and the number of teams who need a back-up, moving TJ at 2.6M really shouldn't be that hard.

The best FAs that might make it there are Samsonov, Rittich, Georgiev, Lyon, Vladar and Allen. Nothing to really get too excited about.

A number of teams need goalies;

CAL: 37M in cap space and Vladar is a UFA.
CAR: .7M in Cap space and Andersen is on IR and a UFA.
CHI: 9M in Cap space and could send back Mrazek.
DET: 4M in Cap space and Husso and Lyon are UFAs.
EDM: 4M in Cap space and TJ would be an upgrade on Pickard.
LAK: 11M in Cap space and Rittich is a UFA.
NSH: 13M in Cap space and and have a kid backing up and Trots is an awful GM.
NJ: 2M in Cap space and and Allen is a UFA.
OTT: .8M in Cap space and Forsbers is a UFA.
PHI: 2.8M in Cap space and all their goalies stink.
SJ: 10.7M in Cap space and Vanechek and Georgiev are UFAs.
UTA: 11.7M in Cap space and Vjmelka is a UFA.

I'd take literally every one of those backups over Jarry for 3 years at $2.6 million.

As much I love ragging on Hextall, all he did was announce it. The deal was done between FSG and Sullivan behind Hextalls back.
 
I foresee two options:

1. Jarry goes to WBS and puts up legitimate numbers. Talking .920sv% and sub 2.00GAA. That MIGHT make a GM think that he has the ability to play still just not with the Penguins, which honestly isn't an insane take. The GM goes to Dubas with an offer around FC or @50% with a cap dump coming back to the Penguins.

A big finish to the year in WBS is about the only way I see Jarry having a smidge of trade value.

2. Buyout. At the moment, I think that's the best route. I'd rather deal with the spikes in cap hit for 2 years over $2.6mil for three. It's close though. Might depend on what other options there are, especially if there's a cap dump that would have to come back in a trade.
 
I bet when Kyle took the job and said he was going to be "aggressive with waivers" he didn't count on his dorkass coach utterly draining every ounce of value those guys had... making them all auto-clears.

Also a bit of a problem with the big plan ya'll like so well.

Pens have 49 of max 50 contracts. If Ludvig had been available instead of Colton Poolman a couple weeks ago, I'm sure they would have gone for that instead. But much like the POJ trade, there was an urgent need for a defenseman for WBS that couldn't wait.

Maybe, Poolman trade came with us sending a man out. Claiming Ludvig alone doesn't help WBS out of their jam nor us with the contract limit. Plus, I believe if we claim Ludvig, we have a to waive him again in order to send him to WBS so who knows if he makes it through (at that time). Not sure where we are at in the waiver ladder but I imagine there are 20 teams above us.

No, since Ludvig was a waiver claim off of the Pens by Colorado, if Pens reclaimed him while on waivers he could be sent straight to WBS.

From one of the top AHL reporters:





Poolman trade was indeed a forward/defenseman contract swap. My point was that Ludvig is obviously better and younger than Poolman, and had Ludvig been available at that time, they would have done a deal for him instead. They'd still be at 49 contracts, which they probably don't want to budge from, and would have a better defenseman.

As it is, we may see another forward for defenseman minor league trade if these injuries continue in WBS.

Ah, interesting. Thanks for posting that! The man-in, man-out still makes more sense but thanks for the correction.
