The issue with Bennett and Marner is you are likely having to offer them 7 years. Miller has 5 and you probably can get him for cheap.

I'm acquiring JT Miller for Pettersson and some picks and prospects that mean nothing in hopes that the Penguins can do something in the playoffs this year.

You cut off the important part there, I said it was not needed to re-sign Guentzel to play with Crosby. They still need a Guentzel caliber guy or better to play with Malkin, but Rakell is showing Guentzel was not needed on L1.

The easiest solution there would have just been “play Guentzel with Malkin” but Sullivan pretty much never did that. That said I think they can remedy it by signing Marner, who’s even better than Guentzel.

Marner seems like a huge pipe dream but I can't help but have the tiniest sliver of hope that maybe with the Dubas connection it could happen.

Do they? If Marner is coming in at $13 million, they'd be sitting at about $79 million in money spent on 9 forwards, 4 D and 2 Gs. The current projection for the 2025-2026 cap is about $93 million from what I've seen, so that leaves them with about $14 million in cap space.

There would need to be a few cap moves there, but probably not any moves you wouldn't want to be making regardless of Marner. Namely I think they'd want to at minimum trade Nedjelkovic (saves $2.5 million) or buyout Jarry (saves $3.5 million for next year but gets ugly in 2026-2027) to open up a spot for Blomqvist.

Sending both of our goalies to the void would be a net win tbh. I know Jarry gets the most flack (justifiably so) but Ned has been pretty terrible too this year. Ned is at nearly a minus 5 goals saved above expected and Jarry is at almost a 7. Their conventional numbers are terrible as well.

And yes I know this team doesn't play good defense (to put it mildy) but TJ and Ned have been very bad even taking that into account.

I don't think people realize how much room the Penguins have to make moves under the projected $92.5 million cap next year, especially if they trade Pettersson for assets, trade Acciari, and then retain on Jarry to dump his cap.

This is just a quick roster creation on PuckPedia's PuckGM. Even with two big splashes, there is still plenty of cap room if you don't want to go young on the third line.

You still have room to get another bottom sixer and/or another left defenseman to push Graves out of the lineup.

The more I’ve thought about it, the more of a no brainer I think it is to get rid of Jarry via a buyout than retain salary. Jarry’s buyout is weird due to all of the signing bonus money at the end of it, so the yearly money is fairly tame outside of that awful 2025-2026. But with Malkin presumably retiring after next year, do you even care about Jarry’s dead cap at that point?

A Jarry buyout gives them a $1.7 million cap penalty next year and then has an awful $5 million cap penalty in 2025-2026. Beyond those two years, the cap penalty is less than $1 million. Hard to be upset about a Jarry buyout when 5/6 years of the buyout are pretty minimal cap penalties.

He can both give Marner a huge deal while filling out the bottom-6 with young guys and cap dumps, though. You can take Chychrun out of that lineup and replace him with POJ to save an additional $5 million to do that.

I don't think so. I think this is the plan, though it's contingent on certain players making it to free agency.

Dubas doesn't want a long rebuild. He's not tearing this down to the studs. Developing players who can play in the middle of the lineup and adding a couple of higher end players via free agency - which costs nothing but cap space - would do that.

Detroit less so unless they think Cossa and/or Augustine are going to be ready in the next three years but Husso, Talbot, and Lyons are just as bad. Montreal has Montembeault with no one of note in the minors. So both teams are in need of a decent starter. If they go to FA, the pickings are slim and they likely have to give a equal or worse goal an equal or higher contract than Jarry so why not make a trade for a cheap starter?

As much as I think Jarry sucks, there is still a piece of me that wonders if he wouldn't improve on a team that has even a vaguely competent defensive zone system which has been absent in Pittsburgh for quite some time now.

I don't think this is Dubas' plan. He's continuously referenced NYR, LA and I guarantee he starts talking about WAS this year in terms of what his focus is on mirroring.

EP40 is way younger, has every bit the offensive upside or more, and probably fits in better. EP40 also seems like the guy the Canucks would rather trade based on Tocchet being a huge JT Miller fan, and EP40's lack of trade protection situation versus JT Miller's full NMC.

Also think Chychrun stays in Washington, or gets way north of $6M AAV on the open market.

If this team finds a way to land EP40, and either Marner or Chychrun, while also firing Sullivan, well they just might have somethin' before Sid hangs 'em up. But this is all a case of everybody here being wayyyyy more ambitious than the team's actually gonna be.
