Pettersson may be hurt, but there's still a ton of rumors about the Canucks potentially trading him. I don't care if it set the rebuild back. Getting Pettersson is in the same vein as Marner where it'd at least make me interested again. Next year:

I checked more into the tweet I posted about EP not being in the lineup last night. Turns out he was a game time decision and not in the lineup. As opposed to healthy and not in the lineup as I presumed.

I know, but Google "Elias Pettersson trade". There's rumors....I might even go as far to say reports....that there's trouble in paradise between he and Miller. And that the Canucks might be forced to trade one and could end up trading Pettersson because he's younger, less baggage, and doesn't have trade protection, so they could get more for him.

I would honestly expect something around the Zucker return. 1st, prospect, cap dump. With some flex between a 1st and 2nd pending the prospect.

Say it's the Oilers - Sam O'Reilly, 2nd, Kane is something I could see.

Noticed on the Penguins nhl video posted re game helmet video from last night that Malkin was wearing what looked like a large brace on his wrist. Guessing that’s the issue. Didn’t he have wrist issues/ surgery in the past?

That is the Marcus Pettersson deal, right there. I think Edmonton wants him, and that is more or less the return. Jeff Skinner does not want to move and he has a full NMC. Evander Kane is in the same boat, but perhaps he would be more willing. Either way, that should be what we ask for in a Pettersson deal.

Personally, I would like Matt Savoie over Sam O'Reilly but O'Reilly is probably more likely to stick at center with Mike Sullivan, and even though that should NOT be a factor it probably is.

Unpopular opinion: what Rakell is doing at L1 LW just reinforces how unnecessary it would have been to re-sign Guentzel to play him with Crosby. Rakell isn't Guentzel but you're not getting much of a production downgrade by replacing Guentzel with Rakell on L1.

That said, they desperately need to get Malkin someone on par with Guentzel or better because Malkin just isn't capable of carrying a line like Crosby anymore. Bunting is a nice complementary L2 LW and net front guy, but they need an actual play driver on L2. Signing Marner and running with this top-6 is such a no brainer if Marner would actually come here:

I think both Jarry and Graves are tradeable. There's always some team desperate for a goalie. The Avs just traded for Wedgewood and gave him the Jarry contract more or less.

With the cap going up, I don't think either guy really has an untradeable contract.

The bigger issue is that this team probably wants too much in return, which is anything more than future considerations tbh. Both guys are addition by subtraction. Which, to be fair, can be said about like half this roster.

Dman and Goalies really rely on the system in front of them to succeed. Graves was good in COL and NJ but sucks here. No goalie has looked good under Sully for years. You might not get a lot fo them but they're movable.

Just look at Blackwood or Kuemper. Mid-goalies on bad teams to great goalies on good teams. How about when we paid VGK to take MAF and he won the Vezina in year 2?

Also, people need to start thinking about players with time left on their deals as positive assets and not as a negative. With the cap going up, and years on deals signed when the cap was low will be great when it jumps next summer.

I'd rather acquire Miller as well especially because it moves Malkin to RW, which I think he needs to do. Issue is you're paying to acquire Miller while you could get Marner for nothing beyond a huge UFA deal.

To me, a better middle ground to the Marner or Miller discussion would be Bennett, assuming he makes it to FA.

We need a center badly. Miller costs assets, Marner will be uber expensive. I think Bennett will cash in but certainly not at the level Marner will. You can probably get him for what Miller is making.

"Jake is unnecessary" & "Malkin needs a Jake caliber winger" seem like contradicting points.

I agree that there isn't a point to trade guys just to trade them though, especially with the team in contention for a playoff spot. Perhaps it would make more sense to take merely ok returns just to clear salary in the summer to take a run at Marner or whoever but mid season there isn't a lot of point to that so long as the team is in the running for a spot.

You cut off the important part there, I said it was not needed to re-sign Guentzel to play with Crosby. They still need a Guentzel caliber guy or better to play with Malkin, but Rakell is showing Guentzel was not needed on L1.

The easiest solution there would have just been “play Guentzel with Malkin” but Sullivan pretty much never did that. That said I think they can remedy it by signing Marner, who’s even better than Guentzel.

It's like you ignored the second part of that post which said I didn't want to pay assets for Miller, hence why I want them to get Marner.

I'd prefer Miller over Marner in isolation but I don't want to pay assets for Miller.

The issue with Bennett and Marner is you are likely having to offer them 7 years. Miller has 5 and you probably can get him for cheap.
