I think Sid's a top-5 player all time, so his legacy is cemented to me. Watching him climb the points ladder would be cool and pretty much the only thing that this team's been worth watching for lately, but no, I'm not really concerned with who he's surrounded with as his career winds down. Stopping this half-assed bullshit of landing in the 12-14th overall pick no man's land is more important than Sid getting an extra like 20pts a season imo. I think it's shittier to watch this team feed the fanbase bullshit about seriously trying to compete while playing losers like DOC or Cody Glass or Kevin Hayes or Matt Grzelcyk in relatively prominent roles all season long than it'd be to rip the band-aid off and start selling pieces that have value and settling in to try and land some legit gems like McKenna or Dupont in the next few drafts. People really want this team to rebuild on the fly and reduce the pain of the post-Sid and Geno era right? That's how you do it. /shrug

This has been a one line team for close to a decade anyway, and barely so. I'm not sure the team is really concerned with who Sid's surrounded with all that much either tbh.
I would probably be more for this several months ago. But now I’m a little hesitant. Some of the teams that have tanked recently have not made their way back. Even SJS who is stacked with young, elite talent is at the bottom of the standings. Buffalo has been rebuilding for decades.

Plus I don’t if my heart can take watching Sid become a 70 point player because he’s surrounded by DOC types.

Man I would love to pick up Kaliyev

I just don't see him making it to the pens
Was just going to post he's on waivers. There was a rumor or 2 that Dubas was interested in the off-season. Kind of strange that Kaliyev hasn't played a single game this season.
Sure he has a slightly higher gpg and slightly lower apg than Glass. But his cap hit is completely buriable. And that shot might just work with 71.

I'd claim him, send him to WBS on a conditioning stint since he's played all of five games this year (and conditioning stints don't require waivers), and use that time where he's on a conditioning stint to clear out a spot on the NHL roster to give him an opportunity.

I'd claim Kaliyev if Tomasino is going to be out for any notable amount of time, but I don't really see a spot for him (that he'd actually play) if Tomasino isn't injured.

He'd just replace Puljujarvi as the 14th forward if Tomasino is healthy.

Tomasino is week to week.

I'd claim Kaliyev. He may not fall to the Pens. But he's 23 with decent pedigree. He has warts, but I'd rather give a look for free than play Hayes.

So skating not a strength, defense is suspect and he probably doesn’t PK lol…Mike Sullivan says no lol…already have one of those in Poolparty taking up space on the bench and we’re at 49 contracts…not gonna happen

Yeah in that case, claim Kaliyev and stick him in Tomasino's spot in the lineup. See if there's anything there and put him back on waivers when Tomasino is back if there's nothing there.

This Wild Card race is gonna be pretty interesting. We're pacing for another low bar year.
If this was gonna be one of those high 90's years, the Pens would already be done. They're lucky.
Of course. And that is why you don't blow it up. You play the season out as things are happening. If six weeks from now, the situation is different, then you start thinking differently.

Right now, we are right in the thick of the chase and every point matters.

Honestly, if we're at all attempting a rebuild, you move anyone who's willing to go and then some. Holding onto bottom 6ers doesn't make any sense no matter if you're in a rebuild or not, and you might as well try to get some value for rapidly depreciating top 9 players while you're at it.
They should be making trades, regardless of how you want to spin it. We have some D surplus now, and we have a crying need for another top-six RW. So a D for RW deal makes the most sense.

Otherwise, they should try to move players that we can replace. Jarry or Ned, for example. We have a goaltender to replace them, so try to create some cap space by moving one or the other. Jarry, preferably.

Try to make this team better. Trading our first-round pick in any season does not accomplish that, but neither does trading Erik Karlsson or Rickard Rakell. So, make moves to improve the club with one eye on the playoff chase and one eye toward the future.

Well with trades, the return is always the thing you look at. So I wouldn’t advocate trading say EK for 2027 5th or whatever. But at the same time, not putting these players on the market is doing a disservice to us and them. We don’t know what the offers are if we don’t make players like EK or Rackell or Russ available.

You guys are talking about moving Malkin to wing as though this team has aspirations to contend over the next few seasons.

I'm getting tired of "what is", I'm thinking more along the lines of "what if"... It's not happening, but how could it possibly happen? Kind of thing.

What skill does Kaliyev have exactly?

He's played nearly 200 games and scores at a 30 pt pace. 18 goals at 5v5 in 188 games.

DOC has 24 in 197.

He is 3 years younger than DOC with a better pace.

Also wouldn't you take a second DOC over Nieto, Accari and Hayes right now?

My brother and I were talking about the Pens demise and he said they should do something wild like try to get Marner on a mega one-year deal. And while that seemed stupid at the time, I thought about the fact that next year is likely it for Malkin. Maybe we could actually try one more year if...

Pettersson+DOC out for a 1st
Resign Tomasino and Glass for <$3mil combined
Resign POJ in a 1.5-2mil range
Trade Neds at the TDL or off-season.

By my math, we'd have about $25mil in space. Offer Marner a one-year max deal, mostly in bonuses.

McGroarty-Sid-Marner
Rakell-Malkin-Rust
Bunting-Lizotte-Tomasino
Poulin-Acciari-Glass (or similar)

POJ-Letang
Pickering-Karlsson
XXXX-XXXX

Jarry-Blomqvist

Leaves about $10mil to get a 3rd pairing, we don't like what we have in the minors.

I'd rather watch a team that is focused on winning then whatever this is or a team where Kevin Hayes is our 2C and Owen Pickering is our 2nd best D.
I don't think you're gonna like watching for the next 5 or so years then.
Maybe we should try getting fewer shitty players and more good ones? Just a thought.
We need JR back. He'd have traded DOC for Marner by now.
