Salary Cap: '24-'25 Salary Thread: Crosbicles Volume MMXXV - Poolman and Poolparty?!?

Looking at Puckpedia, just a few things you can do to help with hitting the cap floor if it's such a problem:

1. Trade for any highly expensive LTIR contract and put them on IR rather than LTIR, meaning the cap hit still applies.. This is exactly what Utah is doing right now with Weber. The Penguins could do this with someone like Price next off-season and add his $10.5 million cap hit and $2 million base salary after his signing bonus.
2. Taking on picks to take on someone like Zibanejad, Gallagher or Krug.
3. Using a retention slot on an expensive player and getting paid to do so.

It's painfully easy to hit the cap floor, to the point where it's bizarre that it's even being brought up as an argument.

It's so easy that you need dance partners to do what you are saying. Dubas had no takers on Jarry, not that they need to do him. The rest are equally challenging. It's all easy just lipping it out there and it's another putting it into the completion column. Especially if there is a stipulation of keeping Crosby comfortable.

So, as I said, not as easy as you make it out to be.

Everything I posted in there is criminally easy to do. Go to Montreal and say "I'll give you a 7th if you give us Price's deal" and they'd instantly say yes, because it gives them cap space for free. Frankly they'd probably be willing to pay the Penguins a 4th or so to move that deal, just like Vegas paid a 5th to move out Weber's LTIR deal.

You're just arbitrarily claiming it's difficult to do even though numerous teams do it every off-season.

In all seriousness I’m not kidding about ‘25 picks vs future years. It’s not about how strong drafts are believed to be bc that’s all speculative.

Not a big believer in actually drafting with all these 2nd/3rds but they’re nice chips for trading for existing players or trading up in the draft. And we are so early into the retool/rebuild cycle that if you pick up even more ‘25 2nd and 3rds we can’t really do that properly. IMO.

Again, you have to have a partner to do the Price deal, and Price would have to okay that deal. I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to wave.

Why would Price refuse to waive? He's not playing anymore. It's his contract being moved, he's not physically relocating to Pittsburgh as a part of the deal. Price has been retired since like 2021.

You're just grasping at nonsensical straws to justify why this team can't nuke the roster. Saying "Price might not waive his NMC to have his contract be traded" makes no sense.

No, some players don't want to move period. No matter what the stipulation is.

His name being of one team.

He literally is not moving. He has been retired for years. It's his contract being moved. He is and still will be only attached to the Habs. It's just the last year of his deal will have his LTIR contract on the Penguins books.

I can't believe I'm seriously arguing this point.

I can't believe you are arguing phantom, fantasy stuff either.

Dude you're literally arguing that they can't trade NHL players off their team today because "what about the cap floor?!?!", even though every off-season has like a dozen guys and contracts moved exactly so that top teams can clear out bad money to teams with a lot of cap space.

You're literally arguing that a player who has been retired for 4 years won't waive his NMC so his contract can be transferred to another team.

If He wanted it to happen, it would have by now.

Some players put themselves above the team.

You are working into absolutes.

Crosby Malkin Rust Letang = 26 million.

Retaining 3 to 5 million on Karlsson = that

Jarry buyout = cap hit.

We will have 0 issues hitting the floor. Heck teams always trying to move cap dumps so trust me we can get it to happen.

Also short. Term high dollar vet deals. Who cares if you overpay a player by 2 million for 1 less year.

Dubas has a busy trade deadline and off season up ahead.

I kinda want ‘26 and ‘27 picks over 2025 picks..
He was doing that, people got big mad

I don’t know why you’re doing this to yourself

I would like to get at least 1 2025 2nd just so they can replenish the pick they lost, but I'm also good with getting more 2026 and 2027 picks rather than picks this year. Even though those two drafts seem like they'll be stronger, teams always value future picks less than current year picks. If you're trading EK, I think it makes much more sense to target a 2026 or 2027 1st for him. Give yourself as much ammo as possible to move up in those drafts if you want to. Same exact strategy the Steelers should be doing to find a QB.

I wonder if you could convince someone to give up a 2027 1st for a rental Pettersson. I think a reasonable price to expect for him is a 2025 and 2026 2nd, but I wonder if a team would prefer to trade a 2027 1st over those two picks. I do still want to get a 2025 2nd somehow, but obviously you take the 1st if you can get one.

Target a 2026 1st for Karlsson, a 2027 1st for Pettersson and a 2025 2nd and prospect for whichever of Bunting, Rakell or Rust you can get that for.

Saad cleared, Grubauer is also on waivers. For as mad as people are with the leash they gave Jarry, at least they didn't hold onto Jarry for as long as Seattle held onto Grubauer. He never had above a .900 save% in any season and he played 4 years for Seattle.

Also I met him in person and he's 100% not 6'1". He's like 5'10".

The goal should be to get a top 4 pick this summer to get one of those top tier guys.

Trade at the TDL:
Pets
Gryz
Ned
DOC
Beau
Nieto (waivers)

Tack back some bad contracts w/ picks like Hayes (Saad).
Bring up some kids and TJ.

Get a goalie in the off-season and maybe go FA hunting.
Fire Sully.

Do it all again next year!
