What does it take to get Connor Geekie out of Tampa to join his brother here in Boston? Can’t imagine RFA negotiations taking long if Sweeney brought the kid here for Morgan. Also would be an all star prospect for us, but he’s obviously already one for them, and cheap. Tampa needs some cap flexibility next year, to build a better third line, and a backup netminder, but are otherwise well positioned.

Of all the players we traded away, Coyle is doing the best by far: 13 points and +5. Marchand only has 3 points in 9 games. Frederic has barely played. Carlo is also doing okay with a +5.

Carlo might be a bell toll away from retirement but I knew he’d do better in a different system on a better team with. Veterans consistent coach. Adding him is a reason the leafs might make it all the way to the finals this year

I doubt Carlo lasts more than two rounds in any PO year he plays the rest of his career.
Dude is in his 9th year and still doesn't take his skates off the ice to absorb a hit. Its something the vast majority of D Men do but not him.

I think Sam Bennett is going to be one of the most popular offseason signings but I think it will predictably age poorly. I like the player but he seems to be an exaggerated progression of David Backes who we saw here. Maybe this is just a hot take but with him scoring just slightly higher then Zacha and Lindholm I see it as being a very big expectation to believe that the toughness and intangibles will make him a good value.

I want no part of it.
After Marner he is the first UFA I would want Boston to sign. David Backes was poorly handled by Cassidy here and if he played in game 7 of the 19 finals I think the Bruins win.

Bennett's contract will age badly if it is a seven year deal, which I would expect. He will be 35 when it is done and he plays very physical but for the first 4 years you have a second line center/left wing who will score 50/55 points and drag this team into the fight, something they desperately needed at points this season.

Bennett's trash!. Spot picking trash!.

27 mil in Cap space with RFA's in Geekie and Lohrei to sign. Also Lauko, beecher and Khusnutni and Merk are RFA he'll have Decisions to make there.

the draft maybe the only big moment this off season, as there's a lot of holes to fill with not so much cap space after he locks up his own guys.

Say Geekie gets 6 Lohrei gets 3, that leaves 18 mil to fill another top 6 defender and what 3-4 forwards, unless he goes with Poitras, Lysell or someone else on an ELC. He could add one nice piece to the offense, but there isn't much available through FA. I don't see a quick turn around unless Sweeney can pull off a beneficial off season trade.

How or why?

The why is clear --- 90 - 100 point scorer for the next 5-7 years, with good health.

The how is less simple, but it can be done.

They aren't bringing in someone less good than Pasta and paying him more than Pasta. Sorry y'all.

Most players don't think like that -- they know the deal.

If they want to win, they've got to put ego aside once in a while.

With that said, I don't think Marner will end up here, but not because the team is afraid of offending Pasta.

I don't understand how any of you believe they'll give Marner a max deal...

I don't think anyone is arguing to give Marner a max deal. Just so we're clear, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but a "max deal" would be 7 years and 20% of the cap so roughly 19m. No one is doing that or arguing for that.

But something that's fair, i.e. around what Pasta, Rantanan, Panarin got in cap% as they are his closest comps which is absolutely going to put him over Pasta's current AAV for his next contract.

I’d rather take the 14m Marner will be seeking and use it to bring in both Bennett & Marchand +

Geekie Lindholm Pastrnak
Marchand Bennett Poitras
Minten Zacha ( ? )

Trade Mittlestadt for cap space to fill in 3rd line RW

Marner = regular season star, playoff dud.

Don't want Bennett, too much money at his age. Marchand 37 beat up and wants too much also. Poitras, the heart, the skill, work ethic, but is he capable of staying healthy and in one piece in the NHL, must work on his skating.

Why on earth would you think Lohrei would get $3 mil?

Lauko, Beecher, Khusnutdinov and Merkulov should take whatever they are offered.
