With or without McKinnon he would be the the best or second-best forward on our roster right now, and it's not even close.

Has Lohrei been benched once yet this season? His lowest minutes in any game are 14. Even last year, he has one game under 12 mins (he played 8 against Pitt on Jan 4 and was minus 3, so probably got benched in that one).
They have young guys making mistakes all the time. John Beecher makes mistakes. Matt Poitras makes mistakes. Cole Koepke isn't exactly a veteran and also makes plenty of mistakes.
Maybe under Julien or Cassidy that was the MO. The only players I've seen benched this year have been Marchand and Pastrnak.

I still feel that way - but not in all contexts. If we don't expect to be able to return to the playoffs next year, for example - why would we not extract maximum value from what will soon be a depreciating asset?

According to a report from TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston, Boston has been very busy. On a recent appearance on TSN’s Insider Trading, Johnston was asked if there was a team in particular he was keeping an eye on. This was his response.
“For me, it’s the Boston Bruins. Look, they’ve already started the sales job here a little bit with Trent Frederic going to Edmonton earlier this week, but I think they could buy and sell. Someone told me there from that team “We’ve got a lot going on.”. Not sure what’s going to come together, but I think they’re also looking at doing some buying in addition to selling, and watch for Brandon Carlo’s name perhaps to come back into play here.”.
A native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carlo has two more years remaining after this one on his contract, meaning a buyer could potentially get three playoff runs out of him. In what appears to be a massive sellers’ market, a Defenseman of his quality on an entirely reasonable contract should In theory, fetch a haul. While there are valid arguments as to why the Bruins should keep Carlo, his value may never be higher.

I'll use this to emphasize my earlier point to @MarchysNoseKnows - if this were the case, I would not want to deal Pasta.
If I were a betting man- which I'm not but if I were lol- I'd lay money on Sweeney believing they will be back in the playoffs next season with some roster tweaks.

Define benched? When I say stapled to the bench, that could be you don't play the rest of a period or you don't take your next few shifts.
Lohrei is a great example though. Younger guy that still developing but is having to "learn on the job." They have no choice but to keep him in because of their situation. He's had his ups and downs, but he's 6th in points for the team and leads all Bruins d-men in points. Playing through those mistakes and learning on the job has been huge for his development vs going up and down like other prospects have had to deal with in the past

Absolutely he believes that. And I suspect he has to believe that for his own job preservation as if he felt they needed a significant overhaul one would think he’d be putting his job in peril.
The question is whether he’s actually right in that belief. And maybe more importantly, if he is right, is his goal the Sinden goal of “making the playoffs” or does he want to build a roster that can actually win in the playoffs. On that question I think he has a ton of work to do.

Coming into this season I figured they'd have a rough regular season but were built for playoffs - then everything went to hell quick. I'm not so sure that it's not still the case. Obviously holes to fill.

He had also taken 236 faceoffs this year with a 53% win rate.
Are you sure you looked? These are first page results. I'm not sure how anyone can say he doesn't immediately become their best option at Center the remainder of this year and next.

I really think that every team can get any player they want, if they are willing to go far enough.
I mean -- I'm under no illusion that the B's are a front runner in this, but Rantanen is in the top 5% of forwards in the league, still shy of 30 and the kind of guy you can build around.
What I truly know nothing about is how interested he would be in signing here long term, which is really the crux of the situation. If they were given the chance to check in with him to see if he'd sign here and was willing --- then I'd be willing to send a package around Zacha and Carlo, which would at least allow them to ice a legitimate lineup in the wide open east.
Beyond that we have no idea what others would give up, but you have to assume that there would only be about 7-9 teams that;
A. He'd want to play for long term
B. Are willing to give up enough to get him
C. Have the cap space to pay him
Remember Carolina, is in bad position and almost has to allow teams to speak with him to gauge interest, or they are at risk of greatly minimizing the return he could get.

Yes, if you look every site lists him as a RW. Can he take faceoffs? sure. Could he slide over and play center in a pinch, ya a lot of guys can. If he was so good as a center, why wouldn't teams play him there? better yet why wouldn't he play there knowing that center get paid a premium?

I don't think he's McDavid or Barkov tier at C but he definitely would do better in that role on both ends of the ice then Zacha, Coyle or Poitras.

I know we already debated about moving him or not, but just curious what is 'soon' to you? I don't think he's going to be depreciating for quite a bit still. Elite players that don't rely on explosive skating, such as Pasta, generally age pretty well.
Good Providence signing and emergency depth. As long as they don't go over vet heavy down there, this is the kind of player they need to have around the young guys.

To be fair, they may have squeaked into the playoffs this year (despite their level of play) if they were fully healthy down the stretch, so I don't think it's that unlikely that they can make the playoffs next season if they improve the roster a bit. I'm just talking about squeaking in though, not being an actual contender
