I get the feeling that this win and their place in the standings is making Sweeney wait til they get closer to the TDL to make a decision on players. But now I’m concerned that teams looking to seriously improve are making their moves now and if the B’s slip and wait til 3/5, 6, or 7 that the number of suitors goes down and with it, the quality of the return as well.

Guess time will tell.

I doubt it. He sounded like it was over right after 4nations announcing Mcavoys injury. Think he’s either doing nothing or selling. If it was his choice he’d probably sell is my guess.

I don’t think it’s his choice. I’m no Sweeney defender but you don’t need a degree from Harvard to know this team is cooked.

I’m more worried that the old man sees them just on the outside looking in and starts licking his chops for some playoff cash and in doing so is putting pressure on Sweeney to not do anything right now.

I hope I’m wrong. But if they’re going to be making trades I’m hoping it starts tomorrow seeing as several key playoff teams have already pulled the trigger.

They are until you don't have any prospects banging on the door to the big club. But I agree trading Geekie is likely a mistake.
Go look at the 20-32nd selection in the drafts. The odds are horrible most years.

On quick look there's 2-4 players better than Geekie that have been selected there since 2020.

Again, the majority of years, people VASTLY overrate the late 1st round picks, NHL GM's included.

The way you keep a semi-decent pool is making sure you get as many dart throws as possible. All these deals Sweeney did for rentals in the past, should of made sure to get back a 4th or 5th rounder in each one as well.

Yes, lets trade Geekie, that 29th Overall pick you get for him has a 10% chance to be better than him 5 years for now.

Draft picks are so overvalued.
I want the 1st as a piece to combine for a 1st line C.

For example, if you can get a 1st for Carlo and one for Geekie, that's suddenly two 1sts you are putting on the table + for a C may start to be an offer worth considering.

……. Because there are a bunch of teams out there just WAITING to trade us their established 1Cs for a couple of first round picks……so that they can maybe hit on a future 1C in the draft.

Seems logical to me….

Having a legit 1C in hockey is the equivalent of having a strong QB in football. Teams don’t trade that position, unless the player forces them too because they’re gonna walk in free agency.

I'm all for compiling picks to do such a thing, but you don't trade Geekie in hopes a 1C becomes available.

Unless I'm directly moving Geekie for such a C or have one on the table saying I need another 1st rounder for I'm not moving him.

You have a guy who is absolutely clicking with Pasta, along with Zacha who sure seem like they're a legitimate first line for around 20-ish million total once Geekie gets his new contract. To me, a legitimate option may be building a legit 2nd line around the best player you can acquire using the assets we pick up this year at the deadline for the UFAs/Coyle/Carlos. Ideally that's a C but who's available? The options are BLEAK unless someone new becomes available.

Also, you need to keep Pasta happy, not sure he'd like if you traded a guy he is absolutely clicking with.

what would make you think that?

The one guy I want them to get this deadline is Lukas Reichel. Mentioned him a few weeks ago but just so happen to see him hit Seravalli's trade board. Got benched a few games ago and then health bombed the last few.

Scored a beauty last night. Craig Smith was on a partial but pushed it in front for Reichel who could actually use his speed to score.

They desperately need someone who can skate like him and they need to start finding linemates that work with Poitras...guys like Koepke, Brazeau and Wahlstrom on the 3rd line just aren't it.

Yesterday's win - while a nice change - also means the Bs likely delay selling since the win provides false hope they could make the playoffs

Watching Detroit and Columbus last night, and with Ottawa and the Rangers in the hunt,to me the Bs just don't stack up. hard to see them finishing in front of three of these teams.

And their schedule after the trade deadline is a killer. My concern is that the Bs stand pat or make minor tweaks and then immediately lose 5 of 6 as they face Tampa, Florida, Ottawa Tampa, Buffalo and LV.

Well we aren’t only trading Geekie in that scenario. We are trading him and whatever eventual contract we would be giving him next year. So we get a first round pick and then go sign someone else for whatever money he was going to make on a new deal.

You are not wrong in what you are saying, but my question is what the cap hit will be with this newfound #1 C. ? The reason I ask is you are paying your 3C 7.8 MIL, does the new guy get 12-14 mil now you have 20 mil tied up in 2 centers, we can only hope the new C is more productive than the old C.
