With a little extra time on my hands, I've been working on a small project with eyes toward the future...
I know players' ages and salaries from Cup-winning rosters have been debated, so I decided to look at the ten most recent Cup-winning teams and see how the top of their rosters were constructed.
I focused on the top scorers in the playoffs at forward, top minute-eating defensemen, and lastly at the goaltenders. Admittedly, I struggled trying to figure out the best way to post the data while making it easily-digestible, but here's what I found:
Average age of the top-scoring forwards (20 or more points in the playoffs)
27.6 yrs (range from 22 to 32)
Average top-scoring forwards AAV cap%
9.31% (range from 1.27% to 13.01%)
Average age of the minutes-eating defensemen (22 minutes or more ATOI in the playoffs)
29.2 yrs (range from 22 to 35)
Average minutes-eating defensemen AAV cap%
7.17% (range from 2.15% to 11.04%)
Average age of the Cup-winning goalies
28.6 yrs (range from 22 to 35)
Average Cup-winning goalie AAV cap%
7.03% (range from 0.82% to 11.98%)
So, using the above as the winning template for the 2025-26 season...
- Top two or three highest scoring forwards should ideally be an average of ~28 yrs old and earn an average of ~$8.9M AAV each.
- Top two minute-eating defensemen should ideally be an average of ~29 yrs old and earn an average of ~$6.85M each.
- Goaltender should ideally be ~29 yrs old and earn ~6.7M.
And the same as above looking to the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons:
Forwards = 9.68M / 10.57M
Defensemen = 7.46M / 8.14M
Goalie = 7.31M / 7.98M
Anyway, barring any high-end additions to the current forward corps, the Bruins (limited?) Cup window will likely shut by no later than 2028. That's the season in which David Pastrnak will reach 32 years of age.
