I think you are putting way too much importance on being GM for a 4-game tourney.

It's not really that difficult to put together a team for Canada.

And once it's done it's done. It's not like he is going working on annexing parts of Czechia to Canada so he can add Pasta to the roster late. It's been one of the dumbest narratives on this site.

Has Mac really been universally criticized? I know there are a couple of people here who go bananas about the guy, but I haven't noticed him getting a lot of crap outside of being a guy that should not run a #1 PP unit (raises hand). He's a very good defenseman who I wish brought a little more to the table offensively, particularly goal scoring and the powerplay, but other than that, I guess we could say he's a little overpaid?

This season it's been hard to give any of the D much credit. The only guy that didn't seem to be struggling early on was Hampus and of course he is the one that gets badly injured. I think Zado is a feast or famine kind of player who seems good for at least one bad penalty a night and at least one boneheaded turnover a night, but he has some good skills too. The whole team really needs to be sorted out in their own zone and it isn't there yet. It's hard for any of them to look great on most nights.

True, but if he's planning to add for a playoff push he might want to make his move(s) sooner rather than later.

I still don't think they've made a firm decision on which direction to take, so he's trying to serve both masters right now, looking at deals to bring in immediate help and deals to gear up for next year and beyond. Scary really.

Since I know nothing about hockey you should enlighten me on why my suggested players are wrong trade candidates. Braz and Freddy for sure. Marchand if he wanted. You take offence with Wotherspoon and Kopke? Interesting.

Correction: the Bruins never traded Orr or Chara, they left via free agency. And Bourque was only traded because he requested it.

I hear ya. My bad. Was more a case of legends leave the Bruins. Weather they trade them or chose not to resign them, being an amazing Bruin doesn't guarantee you a lifetime deal. Moving on from players is ok whoever they are but my point is I'd rather see them traded and gain some assets rather than then walking

Looping back to the "Zadorov's plus minus is lying to you because of the 12 ENG goals"...

Everyone has been up McAvoy's ass this year. Here are McAvoy's partners with at least 100 minutes AT 5 on 5 ONLY.

McAvoy with Zadorov is a +1 with a 47% Corsi and a 50% expected goals for percentage.

McAvoy with Lorhei is a +6 with a 55% Corsi and a 52% expected goals for.

McAvoy with Osterle(!) is a +2 with a 56% Corsi and a 57% expected goals for.

Ok, let's look at Carlo whom everyone (including me, perhaps wrongly!) says has regressed. Again minimum of 100 minutes and 5 on 5 only.

Carlo with Zadorov is a -2 with a 41% Corsi and a 37% expected goals for.

Carlo with Wotherspoon is a +1 with a 52% Corsi and a 48% expected goals for.

Carlo with Lindhom (remember that?) a +4 with a 54% Corsi and a 60% expected goals for.

The only RD who doesn't see his numbers absolutely plummet when Zadorov is on the ice is Andrew Peeke.

Zadorov has sucked and its making the fan base wrongly blame McAvoy and Carlo. Now, I'm not willing to discount that come playoffs his physicality will be a boon. And he was stellar for the Canucks in the playoffs so maybe he just needs the extra mental focus that comes with the playoffs.

But in the regular season he has sucked and I don't understand how folks see otherwise.

What's the context?

Zadorov-McAvoy are second on the team in defensive zone starts yet still put up a +1 and 50% xG.

Lohrei-McAvoy get 75% Ozone starts (and play with the Pastnrak line).
Oesterle-McAvoy got the fewest Dzone starts of any pair on the team with significant ice time.

So of course players are going to see their numbers go down when they go from 75% Ozone starts with Pasta to playing with Coyle against top lines and starting half your shifts in the defensive zone.

The three pairs with the most Dzone starts on this team are Zadorov-Peeke, Zadorov-McAvoy and Zadorov-Carlo.

Zadorov-Carlo has not been good, but I don't think Carlo's issues this season are because he played with Zadorov. Lohrei-Carlo is worse than Zadorov-Carlo. They're -6 with 33% xG. Against the Rangers two weeks ago Carlo assisted on JT Miller's first goal. That wasn't Zadorov's fault. Against the Rangers the other night, Carlo passed it right to Zibanejad for their first goal. That wasn't Zadorov's fault. Zadorov played 21 minutes against the Rangers and was +1. Carlo played 17:40 and was -1.

Logic says they should be looking to sell off their UFAs, I agree the ship has sailed. Their actions in 2016 tell me they aren't ready to do that yet. My take is they feel that selling pieces off when you are 1 point out of a playoff spot is a tough sell, in particular to the more casual fanbase (i.e. the opposite of us here on HF Boards).

If they go buying I won't be shocked. Won't be big purchases, I don't see them moving a top prospect (for them) like a Lysell or a 1st round pick. I can see a couple of medium or low level rentals like I suggested yesterday with Nyqvist and Brandon Tanev. (not that I want to see that, just as examples).

this one is pretty interesting. +12 of his +14 has come during empty net scenarios.

Two more interesting points...

1) If you take away empty net scenarios, Zadorov would still be second on the team in plus/minus, and lead the defense. That's despite having more Dzone starts than any other player on the team, save Beecher.

2) Why isn't anyone else +12 in those situations? Carlo, Pasta, Carlo, Marchand, Peeke, McAvoy, Lindholm... all these guys are out there for those critical minutes, yet the next closest guy on the team is Marchand at +5. When you get scored on in those situations it counts as a minus, like against Ottawa two weeks ago (twice). I know folks are using that stat to write off Zadorov but maybe that stat says something good about his game.

Sweeney is dumb enough to do that, but it would be another mistake. Got to think Sweeney is just waiting until the break because he is focused on Canada. Canada wins it all his stock shoots up as a GM. Puts pressure on management that they can’t just fire a guy that put together a team that won a tournament, and if they did fire him he’d have a lot of options just based off that.

I don’t know what the future holds but Sweeney definitely has been MIA for most the season. Only time we really heard from him it’s about Canada. Touched very little on the team. Hasn’t been talking to any local media or any press conferences. Just silence.
