Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. Vilardi feels like a long shot. Mctavish maybe more likely, but still pricey and costs you Poitras which is fine, I just wonder after nabbing Mittelstadt, what’s the rush /if he’s worth it if he’s likely only getting 3rd line mins as it is for the next year or so like he is now for the ducks. I think Zary and Turcotte could be more accessible and have high upside still while costing a little less to acquire. And for anybody we are paying top assets for, if they are a center, they should be a true 1c now or a year away(Vilardi). We have enough center depth at this point with Lindholm, Mittelstadt, Poitras, Zacha and even Geekie in a pinch if resigned. What we don’t have are dedicated wingers who score at 5v5 and are fast as heck (Ehlers).

Well number one is likely a dman right now on most lists and one of misa or hagens could fall to 3-5 and I'd argue they'd help out before Pasta is out of his prime. Even still it would be all luck to get there especially given their recent showing of knowing how to play pretty good hockey. Even if they go on a Cinderella run and make playoffs they aren't contenders without a real #1 Center and we can pine for Eichel or McDavid all we want but they 99.99% aren't hitting free agency.
I think a player has to have played 80 games to sign an offer sheet, but someone can correct me if I’m wrong, so Bourque is probably short.
I’m sort of interested in Nic Robertson from Toronto. They’ll be up against the cap after signing Tavares, Marner, and Knies. he’s a 23 year old former second round pick who has scored double digits in his first two seasons. Definitely a risk, but potentially a good reward too.

I'll give you non-factor in the playoffs it's probably my biggest concern about him, I just think he's underutilized in Winnipeg.
I know it's easy to look at his numbers and say meh he's a 60 point player but he finally got put on PP1 this year and he became a ppg player so I'm not sure we can say "outlier"
Sure let's call him a 60 point player but most of his production (especially up to this season) comes 5v5. For context, last year he had 25 EV goals and was 16th in the league in 5v5 points. That's some elite territory there.
So you take this very efficient 5v5 scorer, continue to give him PP1 time here and say 4-5 more minutes of ice time because for some odd reason he only gets 15 minutes of ice time over there with one of the best offensive players in the league in Pastrnak and it becomes a much more calculated signing IMO
He would immediately become the teams fastest skater and 2nd most dangerous offensive threat. There's a risk with every signing, I just think the Bruins could put him a position to fulfill the contract. If he's coming here to play similarly the way Winnipeg has utilized him up this season then heck no.

I wanna be optimistic not so much doom gloom. Heck we back in the playoff race again but we dont have many games in hand against other teams chances are low.

Players don’t typically get better at age 29. We can blame it on TOI, PPTOI etc but we just don’t know if he’d be better here.
What’s your explanation for his big drop off in production in playoffs?

I don't really know about that one. I'm assuming the problem most skill guys face...less time and space, difficulty getting to the dirty areas, etc.
I also feel like Winnipeg just chokes every first round so it's like he has 5 games or else.
And yea he definitely won't get "better" at 29 but theres a chance we could get more "productive" here and thats the point I'm trying to make I guess. As long as he's put into the role I've been describing.
This is my idea, based off rough estimates provided on cap wages, a trade with Toronto for Nicholas Robertson. Leaves about 7 million to fill out the third line, or let Marat, Poitras, Minten, etc fight for spots and fill it out internally. Also assumes good health on the back end.

Ehlers production has always been weird. Absolutely a case of where you see him play and go "wow this dude should be tearing the league up" but then you look at his statline and go "oh"
Statistically he's one of the better 5 on 5 producers in the league. Last year only 7 of his 61 points came on the power play, which actually led to a bit of showdown between him and Rick Bowness if memory serves. Ehlers asked out because he felt he was being misued. Scott Arniel comes in, makes a big thing at his introductory presser about how he "needs" Elhers and sure enough, Ehlers is now killing it on the power play. Even more bizarrely, it comes with only a slight bump in ice time given he's getting 2:35 on the PP as opposed to 2:12 last year
Somehow between Paul Maurice, Dave Lowry (interim), Rick Bowness and Scott Arniel, only one of them could figure out how to actually use him on the PP. He's the one guy on that Jets roster that always makes me go hmmm; Schiefele? Legit stud. Connor? Legit stud. Vilardi? fantastic complementary piece. Ehlers? Ehhhhhhhhh. Not sure i would trust him to be the driver, or so to speak.
He also doesn't have a great model of health given he's missed 20 games or more multiple times in his career.

We need to hold onto picks and draft. We can add through free agency. We need cheap talent coming through the ranks.
I'll probably get crucified for this but give me Money Mitch and watch the laffs board completely melt down. Him and Pasta can have a race to 100 pts. Probably a pipe dream but it would be filthy to see him in the spoked B.

You guys need to put down the glue guns. Marner is a corporation run by his dad that will get max contract available. Bruins shouldnt be paying more than Pasta, who is a much better player, so wont be in the running. Marner doesnt work in the playoffs anyway.

I’m not smart enough, nor do I have the energy to look it up, but I’ve always thought that a better way to judge a player’s playoff effectiveness would be to figure out the % of his teams goals he’s a part of compared with the regular season.
Meaning, just for simple math, say he scores 50 goals and 50 assists in the RS and the team scored 200 goals.
His 100 points contributed to 50% of their goals.
When the playoffs roll around, checking gets tighter, you’re not playing games against poor teams and the games tend to be lower scoring (historically).
If, in the playoffs he suddenly has a hand in only 25% of their goals, then that’s concerning.
If he stays at the 50% or does better, it’s encouraging.
Obviously there are other variables, but I think it’s a relevant point.

Ehlers is going to be a big source of dialogue going into the summer for sure
I know you didn’t touch upon the playoff performances but I was starting to think is that really a high priority now given the state of the team?
We need players to get us there first…

While I’ve come to the defense of Marner and Ehlers game, I don’t think we win the bidding war for either. I say Ehlers to Canes, and Marner to Caps. Even if we match money, other teams have more attractive centers and futures. Marner could be the highest paid in the NHL until summer 2026. I do have a very fun proposition for the Caps though…
Let us Trade for McMichael
Caps have a glut of Centers with PLD and Strome, Leonard incoming, McMichaels arriving successfully, Protas arriving successfully. Protas is great at wing but is a center, and is signed cheap and long term to 2030, and may end up being the best contract in the league by 2026. McMichaels is also great wing, but natural center. His contract ending after next year means they will need to give him a fat bag. With essentially no shot of being a center given the pecking order now and with Leonard coming in, what do you do? I’d move a variety names to get McMichael, including Zacha and even Lohrei if we think that helps us pull them away from resigning Chychrun for us to swoop in! Strome might be the more likely move from the Caps in a year or two realistically.
