Every single Leaf fan I know RAGES on Marner every playoff.

You guys don't know about this?

Do we need to post the clip of NYLANDER telling him to suck it up? Imagine when it's Nylander telling you to sack up, lol.

This season he's a sub .900 and knocking on the door of a 3.00 GAA. With that said though, his Goals Saved Above Expected is a -1.5 on the season, so he's saved slightly fewer goals than he should, but not by a significant amount. Now for $8 million, obviously you want a guy saving more goals than he should.

The reason I'm not freaking out about Swayman (like many are) is because he's a got 3 really good seasons before this year (4 if you want to count his 10 game stint after turning pro). Just like there are players that have career years and it becomes an outlier, players will also have career worst years that become an outlier.

This season was a perfect storm. Swayman gets signed late and no training camp in. Hampus goes down early in the season and doesn't return. The coach gets let go after ~20 games and some feel like the team knew Monty wasn't returning and because of it and he lost the room. The offense has just not been there. Despite being 13th in expected goals for, they rank 25th in goals for. The PP ranks 30th in the NHL and the PK ranks 20th in the NHL. This is a complete 180 from where they were over the last 3 seasons when they ranked 10th in the PP and 2nd in the PK.

Again perfect storm. I'm not ready to throw everything out those because of one bad season.

On eof the concerns with Swayman were before his signing was could he carry the load, he failed. He solid when he had Ullmark to bolster him up, that is no longer the case. I would get away from this guy before his NTC kicks in...........as you can tell I am not a fan, and have no intentions of hiding it.

Yeah it's definitely a risk and there is no denying it. I have watched Toronto a lot the last couple of years and this years Marner has absolutely been different in his pace and intensity but yup, those $$$ carry big risk. Maybe Berube has threatened his life because I have seen him lay the body several times this year and it caught my attention.

Everyone on this board knows you're not a fan lol. You've been using every opportunity given to rip on Swayman. Even this last game, he plays great and pitches a shutout. The only comment I recall that you had was to say he's an unreliable goalie.

I'm not even sure why I'm continuing to interact with you on this topic. Swayman could go the rest of the season and not give up a goal and you'd still find something to complain about with him......simply because you are not a fan. You can't have an objective conversation with you because you've already made up your mind and no facts or evidence will change it.

I think a lot of us don't understand how Sweeney builds the playoff team.
The most important for him is the character and role on the team.

He starts from the ground as a foundation, therefore the 4th line forwards and bottom pair Dmen are the most important.

These jewels are not easy to find and sign or trade for, so he has to overpay to get them.
There are never enough of them so he keeps at least 6 of them on the forward lines at any moment (currently Beecher, Koepke, Kastelic, Brown, Lauko, Lettieri) and 4-5 on the Dpairs (Zadorov, Peeke, Jokiharju, Wotherspoon, Mitchell).

Then come some 3rd liners.
Because the 3rd line is fully occupied by a spare 4th liners he slots them on the 2nd or even the 1st line, Elias Lindholm or Zacha for example.

The 2nd liners are a waste of time for him.
With the most of the roster filled anyway and the cap space already spent he can bring only 1 or 2 true top-end talent as the icing on the cake.

Same with the Dmen.
Over the past couple of seasons: Reilly, Forbort, Moore, Grzelcyk, Zboril, Vaakanainen, Clifton, Stralman, Shattenkirk, Zadorov, Peeke, Wotherspoon, Mitchell, Callahan, Jokiharju all have one thing in common, none of them are top 4 D.

Would an offer sheet to Knies or Cuylle risking a 1st and 3rd be worth it? I’m assuming it’s 2026 draft picks.
Another guy we probably could offer sheet is Alexander Holtz in Vegas, be a quicker way to restock the shelves.

Not sure it's smart for us to risk a 2026 1st but Knies is a real nice piece for sure

We really shouldn't use Leaf fan reactions as any sort of realistic gauge of the team and players. They are worse than Bruin fans about their players, coaches, and management.
 
I'd have no issue adding Marner to our team. Elite vision and passing. he just needs a finisher and Pasta would rake with him and it could do Lindholm a world of good.
