How fast they turn it around depends a lot on health more than anything else. If Mac and Lindholm come back strong, and Swayman gets a full preseason, I think they can be pretty good no matter what else they do.

He gone

I mocked out a lineup where they sign Boeser or Ehlers for 8.5.

Give Geekie and Lohrei 4.0 each and, Khusnutdinov 1.75 and Lauko 1.25 and they have 7.0 left to spend on 1F and 1D.

If they think they can fill out the defense with someone in house or re-sign Wotherspoon, that should only use up 1.5-2.

Which means they can get a pretty decent forward using 3.5-4.5.

Or they can do the opposite and fill out the forwards with a Lysell, Beecher (No, God no!) and spend a bit on the defense.

So looks like at least in some corners Beecher has inherited the available hate now that some key whipping boys have been dealt.

I will be stunned if Beecher is not on the roster come opening night

I am sure he will be there. He’s not really progressed this season like I hoped he would. He’s still young and there’s time but he needs to get better in the o-zone if that is possible for him.

Khusy - Lindholm - Poitras
Lauko - Minten - Kastelic
X: Beecher

Signing Geekie at $4.5m, Jokiharju at $3.5 and Lohrei at $2m leaves about $13m in cap space.
Hagens/Misa at 1C, maybe not the best spot to put a rookie but f it we ball.
Ehlers at lw

Came to post something very similar.

My only difference if that I would put CM with Pasta and just look for a new duo to play with Geekie. I think CM is better off on a line where he isn’t expected to drive play and the team needs at least one play driving center on the roster.

Good points. I would like to see Mittelstadt with Pasta as well.

For right now I wouldn’t mind-
Zacha-Mittlestadt-Pasta
Kuzy-Lindholm-Geekie
Merk-Poitras-Lettieri
Lauko-Kastelic-Koepke
Beecher

Curious to see what college FAs they land.

Also, mentioned this yesterday, but I want to both see Mittlestadt with Pasta and Geekie away from Pasta to show he can help drive a line in the top 6 without him. He’s fine remaining on PP1, he’s earned it.

Lastly, for the right price, I want to keep Koepke around. I know he went for quite a pointless streak after starting the season ablaze with the fourth line. But the guy has an NHL shot, some speed and honestly is pretty hard to knock off the puck. I like his game. Obviously he needs to continue to chip in every now and then though.

If Ehlers is over 8.5, I’d think a bit harder about Marner; bit younger, would be electric with Pasta, improve Poitras, and simply put points up at a muchhhh higher rate. Boeser doesn’t light my lamp enough for me to want him past 7.15 even though he asks for more. Geekie I think we land for 5-5.3

Wyatt Johnston took a very agreeable rate imo at 8.4m as a 21yo center that already has 60 points this season and is even better in the playoffs. The tax factor in Dallas makes a difference, but it’s still interesting nonetheless as Wyatt could have cashed in a bit more I think, he’s going to be hitting 90 points by 2026-2027 easy. I think GMs will say the big contracts are going to really factor in the year after next and you’ll see a bridge deal or two more than usual because of this.

I too would like to see Geekie be the shooter for the 2nd line. I think it could potentially solve the problem of not threatening the defense with a viable goal scorer on the ice after the 1st line comes off. I like the work he's done with Pasta/Zacha but I think for the health of the lines ( and to see what we've got in him before truly committing ) 2nd line RW is where I would put him. Give him a playmaker who can drive the play with his legs and pass ( Mitterlstadt ) on the wings and a details guy ( Lindholm ) winning faceoffs and making strong two way plays and I think that's a decent 2nd line with some potential, especially if Lindholm can regain his offensive game.

I'd like to see the big money splash spent on a top line lw'er who can create off the rush and be a threat to shoot.

$$$$$ -- Zacha -- Pasta

Mitts -- Lindholm -- Geekie

Lauko -- Poitras -- Lysell

Khusy -- Minten -- Kastelic

I wonder if now that they’ve found their guts if they ever would consider offer sheets.

They do have enough own pick capital to get a top 6 player.

$4,580,917 - $6,871,3741 1st-round pick, 1 3rd-round pick
That's a pretty low cap hit. Is there really anyone out there that is enticing enough and that their own team wouldn't match.

Id like to see them package picks except the 2026 picks, either to move up in the 2025 draft or for a deal for a legit number one center, but yea I see your point, but with Sweeney luck with FA he scares the hell out of me after just re-couping some badly needed picks.lol
