Boston Bruins 24-25 Roster/Cap thread XII

Teams don't get out of that youth movement easily (Ottawa, Anaheim, Vancouver, Calgary, San Jose, Chicago, Buffalo, Detroit) and you have to be fully ready for a half-decade of playoff DNQ.

Icing on the cake for that move, the Bruins don't appear to have one single top six prospect or top four D in the system at all. None invited to the WJC's as the only NHL team with no prospects attending.

In my opinion, the Bruins have to retool. This team isn't a JT Miller away from competing if they can't consistently defend, break the puck out of their own zone, or make a pass. I'm sure Miller would be happy about that :sarcasm: . Apart from the three players you mentioned, a lot of this roster is replaceable. It's doubtful E. Lindholm, Zadorov, and Kastelic are moved since they just signed/re-signed. Marchand is probably a lifer, but he can decide if he wants to get moved at the deadline or not.

1. Retool by trading away players that won't have a future on this team to restock the cupboard and gain cap space.
2. Call up Merkulov and Lysell to play out the rest of the season and get them NHL experience. Let them prove that they can be mainstays on this roster moving forward. If they aren't, maybe they show everyone enough that they can be included in a deal to add to this roster in the offseason ala Spooner.
3. With the extra cap space, aim for a big ticket FA forward, and/or try to make a deal prior to the draft with the assets acquired to add another piece to the roster.

Zacha - On pace for 42pts, is tight with Pastrnak, but if a team gives the Bruins an offer they can't refuse, they should think about it.
Geekie - Was a 4th liner that became a top 9 player last season, and is now on the 1st line. He's on pace for similar numbers he had last season. Would be a great add for a playoff team.
Frederic - It sounds like Sweeney is doing his best to re-sign him so the Bruins identified him as a core piece moving forward.
Coyle - Should be traded
Brazeau - Could maybe net a pretty decent return for the Bruins.

H. Lindholm - He has a full NMC, and the Bruins are better with him than without him.
McAvoy - NMC
Carlo - Teams always want a top 4RD and since he has term, he would probably net the biggest return for the Bruins at the trade deadline.

If they make the playoffs, then good, let them gain that experience like Lohrei and Beecher did last season. This would be the lineup:

Zacha - Poitras - Pastrnak
Marchand - Lindholm - Lysell
Merkulov - Frederic - Wahlstrom/Lettieri
Koepke - Beecher - Kastelic
Wahlstrom/Lettieri

Lindholm - McAvoy

Gonna be honest, that’s a lottery team for 4 years. Even getting a top five each year ages out the core as those guys develop into NHL players while in the AHL

Many of you could wake up with an actual 1st line C in Boston. Or, we as a fanbase missed the boat again to ensure that the amazing prospects are still Bruins and ready to step into top six roles…

He gives the Bruins four years, I think that is a win. That’s all this core has in them.

Please don't trade for Miller. You don't need to buy, you need to sell! Goodbye Coyle and Goodbye Carlo. Get a couple picks and a prospect for them

I would sell high( whatever high is for him) on Brasseau I think .Teams will want him with his size and reach ( 10 goals 20 pts in 45 gms) .Freddy be gone as well if he not resigned by deadline.

This team is not a JT Miller away from contention and we'd be acquiring his age 32-36 seasons. Hard pass. They made big bets on Zadorov and Lindholm in the offseason and both have failed spectacularly to this point, take a step back and reset at least for one season. Coyle can get you a good return if you retain on him IMO, Carlo can get you a good return without retention. Explore the market on all three of Geekie, Fred, or Braz. If any of them get you something decent then go for it. Be willing to take back a bad contract in any of those deals (if the term isn't crazy) to maximize the return. Fill any gaps in the lineup with the kids for the rest of the season. Enter the offseason with a lot of cap space, the draft capital or prospects you got as a return in any trades, and hopefully a better understanding of where the kids are. Go from there.

Let the Geek & perhaps Peeke go. Frederic without question.

Unfortunately, Charlie Coyle & John Beecher, who simply can't find the net, as much as I've rooted for him.

A "mid" prospect, as Evan Marinofsky might say. They should, uh, figure out what they have in Lysell & Merkulov and get on with it.

If they defer, they defer. I would investigate, confirm in preliminary fashion and go from there.

I don't want to trade Brando. Many do. Most don't quite understand how good he is, in his quiet way. You can't make a player something they're not, generally speaking, as Butch observed when speaking of Carlo. He's not a bruiser. He's an intelligent, conservative, solid D with a long reach and a disruptive stick.

Keep him if you can. If not, not.

His contract makes it easier to give it a shot, he is not going to burden this team for 5-6 more years . I think what the cost to get him would be my biggest concern.

My interest in trading Carlo isn't cause I don't value him, it's cause I think he gets you a really good return and I'm not sure he's gonna be a guy they should look to extend beyond his current contract because of his concussion history. Replacing a top 4 RD is gonna be hard, don't get me wrong. But this team needs to add so much up front to get back into contention that I think they kinda have to make some moves that might hurt a bit.

Am I the only one that would like the Bruins to leave more cap space throughout the year ?

I get wanting to spend it all or close to but with the roster holes we have mostly top 6 for the last two years we’re basically staying the same, I’d even say players overachieved last year and with no cap space we can’t actually target the players we need during the season.

IMO there’s discounts to be had on a top 6 player later in a season cause cap space is an asset to have in a trade not only that we have a few younger guys which could’ve been getting experience during this process.

Those trades rarely happen through the season and it's because most teams still have a shot at the playoffs and are not yet selling and less to do with cap space. That's what parity is doing.

Edmonton could have some interest in Justin Brazeau

After the last ten games I see this team doing a re-tool, instead off trying t make a run. Chaos at its finest has hit. Changes need to be made by subtraction, to move forward.
