The D is just too expensive, too risky, too slow and meant to play 80's hockey with size and grit. They pay over 25 musd to top-4 d and at the same time Whalers are paying 29 to whole d-core and their D produces what D needs to produce.

Zadorov was a bad signing with that contract. Carlo is wayyyyy out of the game and best stuff with him is the contract. Maybe he should be traded if there is any high value anymore. HLindholm got back to his regular form after one career season. McAvoy is focusing just highlight reel stuff instead of simple plays.

The roster is flawed and everybody without rose colored glasses could see this. Some guys retired or Sweeney let guys go every year from the top 6 (DeBrusk, Hall, Bergeron, Krejci) and didn´t really replace them with guys with the same skill level expect for Lindholm. The problem is that Lindholm is more of a complimentray player and not a line driver. Everybody knew that besides Sweeney ... The same with Zadarov. Everybody knew that he is third line defenseman who occasionally can play in the top four. Still Sweeney invested heavily in him. The problem is, in a cap world you have to save every penny for the elite talent. Still Sweeney lives in a world where he spends his cap in depth and the playoff record of his teams during his tenure is showing it ...

McAvoy is playing like a guy trying not to get injured

Can those who want to trade a center for a winger explain it?

For all Coyle does wrong, I don't know how we'd survive without him if another C isn't coming back. We suck down the middle.

I think we will be fine missing his mediocre d Zone coverage and his one even strength goal. Not to mention the automatic face off loss when killing penalties allowing the opposition a nice fresh start to their power plays.

I would trade him for an assistant to the assistant skate sharpener.

Maybe trade Coyle and Poitras for a top 6 guy?
For team that lacks skill why would you trade a skilled rookie?

Its funny that even Sweeney mentioned that their centers drive the plays and create the offense, but its one of their biggest weaknesses.

I don’t think this fanbase is ready to blow things up and suck, just to draft 18 yr olds who may or may not be good in 5 years. Ask San Jose fans how much fun they’ve had the past 7-10 years
You might also ask Detroit, Buffalo fans also. I must admit, so that I can be honest, truthful, and selfish, I am too old for a rebuild, and I am not sure it is necessary, see what Washington has done this year, see how Vegas makes changes on the fly. So my suggestion Donnie, stop worrying about "Team Canada" and worry about the Bruins, and remember who pays your salary.

I doubt you can replace his minutes right now (Coyle's) if you look at them. Specially in the dzone and dot. The idea that it's the next man up taking them should worry you. Unless you want a top pick, which you might!

In a heartbeat
Take a deep breath, hold it and then let it out and rethink what you just said. Now if you can get Hall on a bargain deal, history would repeat itself, let's not weaken the team to get what you might be able to get anyways.

St. Louis had a younger Robert Thomas but he can drive play with his playmaking. I'd call ROR and Schenn more complimentary (especially ROR). And complimentary doesn't mean lesser, just it dictates who you line them up with more. And the shift is more the past few years. But now you got guys like Panarin, Kaprizov, Marner, Kucherov, Rantanen, Nylander, who are just as valuable to their teams offensively as the centers are. In some cases, mores so. It was once almost blasphemy for a winger to get Hart consideration (other than OV for his generational goal scoring). Now it's much more common. Rantanen and Kaprizov especially are criminally underrated.

It's not the roster with the worst centers, it's the roster with the worst group of forwards in the league. Boston or Chicago. The numbers speak for themselves.
You are so right, I have been saying that there were no centers out there that made your forward lines any better than what you had with Zacha and Coyle, good solid wings would have been just as effective and maybe more so than what was out there. Some players in this town get free passes, Coyle and Zacha have not played well this year that's a given but both players really stepped-up last year and to me that says something me about the type of players they are, and I am not saying they should not be criticized, but some of it is over the top, when the wings play needs improvement .

Man what this team needs is a busted up 33 year old Taylor Hall who has 70% of his old speed, and gets hurt every 30 games. Man we need THAT.

I watched the Ducks-Hawks game last night and Taylor is definitely not the player he was when he was a here. He's lost a couple of steps.

I think they'd survive. They've used 8 different guys in the middle this year so far and that's not counting Merkulov who has played most of his AHL career in the middle.

Part of the issue is too much cap space is invested in two-way ability up the middle of the ice, and not enough in speed/shooting/scoring/play-driving on the wing.
