Disclaimer I’m really high on Merkulov

Not sure why he doesn’t get longer looks. Crafty, good passing/compete, has produced wherever he goes, he had a real nice assist in his brief look this season. Not sure what the deal is with management not giving him a longer look. I get he isn’t the answer for the many problems the bruins currently have but it strikes me as odd how short of a look he has been given, makes no sense. He has consistently been providences best player/most dangerous player. Couldn’t hurt to try feeding him some minutes with decent linemates, throw him on the PP.

One of many odd management decisions I don’t get, he has earned a longer look compared to some of the trash performances we have seen out of our forward group.

Carlo's value should be the same since he never has point production. They have a defensive dmen surplus and I don't think Zadorov/Peeke are tradable.
Other teams have pro scouts. They watch the games. And there's analytics for defense. I know some fans don't believe in analytics but every NHL (minor league, college, junior...) team does.

I don't think you're fooling anyone into thinking they're getting the good Carlo. Now, maybe they believe he'll rebound once he's away from here, that's a bet I could see teams making, but if I was that team I'd want a discount for the risk that he might not recover.

Is it just me but man the Morning Brew is tough to listen to. All the sponsor mentions aside it seems like Razor is a boot licking Bruins apologist. I know he knows his stuff but Billy vents and Razor justifies.
Dom, you and Chris call it like you see it and it is refreshing and a far superior and entertaining podcast imo

But why would anyone give you a Pasta level player for a current Pasta who's underperforming?
Pasta under-performing today, but he's the type of player who can score back to back hatty's and have 15-18 pts in 10 games. Other Gms aren't dumb they know Pasta can breakout at anytime and would stand a lot better chance of doing so with better talent around him than what he currently has in Boston.

Like I said thou I dont move him.I bld around him, unless there's a Lindross like package coming back but don't fool yourself other GMs would be all over it if Pasta was made available, under-performing currently or not.

Their 12th forward on any given night has been a revolving door and they've used by my count 18 or 19 forwards so far this year. The put Johnson in last night and he posted a minus 4.

I see no reason not to give this a try. Is it any better or worse than some of the other players they've tried up front this year?
Add to that he's free and cheap along with his upside being far greater than a Tyler Johnson at this point in their careers.

Honestly just listening to everyone pile on wouldn’t make for an interesting show

Really not what I'm looking for everyone to pile on the Bruins, was more of a comment on how Dom's show is honest and Razor's sugar coats it And isn't enjoyable to me.

Its a slippery slope. Razor works for the Bruins. (NESN)
Definitely and see why he keeps a positive spin. Maybe just more noticeable now the the team is struggling. I'm now also listening to Dom and Chris and noticed a huge difference which I like. I do see why Morning Brew is softer on topics. Although Billy wants to speak his mind.

Rather have prospects that are 19, 20 or 21 than picks to be honest.

I figure we’re probably better off taking guys other teams have picked, with some sort of track record than handing picks to this group.
Not saying you are wrong and not saying you are right, but who do you replace them with, these picks will not be ready for 2- 3 years, if ever what do you do for now, kick this down the drain and the next 2-3years also. How would Pasta feel about that, would he want out.

You raise some valid concerns.

The last time Boston picked in the top ten of the draft was 2011 9ov and 2010 2ov. Since then their highest pick has been 13ov 2015. (I won't go there, enough has already been siad). For more than a decade they have not had a top ten pick, and many of those years in between they traded their first pick in an attempt to prolong their competitiveness (combined with other reasons). It is amazing they lasted as long as they have.

The lack of top end home grown talent is a direct reflection upon where they have drafted for so long. Pastrnak 25ov 2014 and Marchand 3rd round 2006 are he last impact forwards currently on the team. (Poitras may or may not , still to be seen, but their is hope).

They have relied primary on the careers of the now departed, trades & FA, and hitting on low round draft picks to sustain the competitiveness of the team.

The problem is, for better or for worse, this management team will never allow a full rebuild. They will attempt to make corrections and build the team in the off-season. Along with possibly a different coach depending on who is available at that time. But team top six (3) talent is the issue and most troubling concern.

If this team is somehow in the running for a possible playoff spot come the end of February / early March in all likelihood they will try to add to the roster.

It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. The only thing they have that they won't mind trading at that point would be their first round pick. That is not meant to say they shouldn't trade pending FAs on their roster or under-performers, but if they are fighting for a playoff spot they won't want futures back. It will have to be at least a player they feel is equal or better and maybe a pick in return. Otherwise, they will hold on to those players. This team needs an Esposito type trade (both times) but in today's NHL that almost never happens in season ... look to the off season.

They have to be very smart what they do with the first round pick. The pick, unless a complete collapse, will most likely be somewhere in the middle of the first round. Whomever they may draft, unless they get extremely lucky, will most likely be several years away from Boston, if ever.

Which is why I stated earlier, if they trade that pick it better be for someone under 27 already in they NHL who is or has legitimate six talent / potential, not another 3rd or 4th liner they want to make believe or hope can play in the top six. They definitely should not trade it for an aging downhill 30 plus veteran again in hopes of prolonging their playoff qualifying another year only to be one and done.

However, with the history of this team, they will try to retool on the fly. It may be very frustrating and mediocre for a while. This year may be what we thought last year was going to be.

Excellent post.

If only the Bruins could sell their reclamation projects to a GM like... Don Sweeney. He was so happy to take Peeke and Korpisalo like charity.

(I don't care if Korpi wins the vezina, Sweeney still got burned on that deal for value at the time).

I’ve always had that opinion about razor. I listen to a lot of hockey talk and Razor never seems to want to take the chance he might ruffle someone’s feathers. It’s to bad because he’s a great hockey mind and he should just fire from the hip more often.

Sorry my friend that is a weak ass reply, the reason why many listen to these shows is because they like hockey and want hear what is going and others thoughts, doesn't mean you have to agree.
Ass backwards- he doesn't like it because he doesn't agree with it. If that bugs yah then don't listen. No biggie.

I like Raycroft's takes because he knows the game at that level from a goalies perspective better than just about anyone out there. But he doesn't rip the team enough so it's a tough listen... each to their own I guess.

They'd have to become sellers and I'm not sure their minds are there yet.

Trade Coyle, Frederic, and one of Carlo or Peeke. Call up Poitras, Merkulov, and Mitchell. Hope for the best. If not, at least you got a return on some dead weight.

Might as well try him over Pylon Peeke

Former Bruins Mini 1on1 Legend Oliver Whalstrom is on waivers. I'd take a gamble on him. He can't be worse than anything else were rolling out.
