Here’s not a style comparison but a production comparison between Jake and Mcg

Guentzel

NCAA

GP G A P
37 7 27 34
36 14 25 39
35 19 27 46

First year of AHL .55 PPG

McGroaty

NCAA

GP G A P
39 18 21 39
36 18 36 52

First year of AHL .55 PPG

People trying to make McGroaty some generic grinder are crazy. He absolutely has the potential to be a productive top 6 winger.

guentzel was a pretty big wildcard who hit. saying he has all these characteristics now as a hyper successful nhl all star as opposed to mcg who seemingly does not feels like some real inconsistency bias.

Eh. It's not like his game completely blossomed out of nowhere. If he was 4 inches taller his draft year he's a fairly high pick. Size was a widely-known reason that he was available where he was since nothing about his game really jumped out at you otherwise.

To be clear this isn't me saying I think McG is destined to be a plug, just that I don't see the Guentz comp, even from a skillset projection standpoint.

i hear you, but iirc the first time guentzel scored 30 at any level was when he blew past that number and hit 40 for the big pens. he had a ton of question marks around that clear level of skill

will say from a clear style of play standpoint though, they do seem like apples and oranges

If my memory serves me correctly, Shero said that with his brothers all being closer to 6 foot, they expected Jake to grow some more, but size was definitely why he fell.

Eh I think Jake’s DY made it clear you were drafting him to hopefully be a scorer

on style I’ve clearly made my point. I am not saying potential, or tools are similar. I’d recommend people queue up some YouTube but whatever.

Only thing I’ll say is McGroarty not this power forward Kunitz type he’s made out to be. He’s thrown some big highlight reel hits but he doesn’t have the skating to impose himself physically shift to shift and definitely won’t in the pros.
