The only pick by Dubas that I'm questionable with is Howe, but Pieniemi looking so good definitely helps out with that. And it's not even that Howe is bad, but rather I'm skeptical he has the upside that warrants using a mid 2nd on him.

He sold high on Yager to get McGroarty and numerous of his other picks (namely Brunicke, Pieniemi and Ilyin) seem to be outperforming their draft spot.

And that Knies kid he took in Toronto seems to be killing it as well.

Hopeful Dubas and his scouts can get some supporting cast pieces in place by the time the team's (ideally) landing those foundational pieces at the top of the draft in a couple years.

Knies isn't killing it. He's just getting fed minutes in the top six. Weird how some teams play their prospects in the top six, I admit.

looks like a great pick
Actually no. I guess he's ok for a 3rd rounder, but he's far too careless with the puck. He's like Derrick Pouliot. Really poor in his own end. Not player Sullivan will like at all! Tanner Howe? Sullivan will LOVE him. He's great away from the puck. A real heart and soul guy.

Nice for the PP good first pass, but his overall game leaves a lot to be desired.

I guess? People spend seconds and firsts on the kind of player Howe ideally turns into all the time because it’s a very rare but valuable skill set. Having a guy who can physically agitate and score is absolutely worth a high pick. Now it’s likely Howe doesn’t make it because few do. But hitting on that gamble would make it absolutely worth it.

If he becomes a guy who can be a PP specialist and play on the 3rd pair, thats a win for a 3rd rd pick IMO.

the only problem with that is you risk the chance that the supporting cast will make the team good enough that you finish too high to get those foundational players.

Agreed!!

I really liked Howe this tournament to be honest, and it's really not about stats when it comes to him. The guy plays hard, never takes a shift off and is always giving his 110% out there. I'm willing to bet he turns into a full NHLer down the road as a 3rd liner.

Same. I'll also add the caveat that I think the kind of player that Howe projects to be also is not the kind of player that you build a team around and will absolutely not be useful here under the current regime. That said, you pair him with a talented center and good-to-great things will probably happen. You make him PK and not play with an edge? Largely wasted.
