Risto is now in beast mode.

I think we can, by and large, grant this, as long as we're granting also that Risto's "Beast Mode" is "serviceable mid-pair defenseman", not "Beast."

No, I don't think anyone around here thought they would. We're not that gullible. What we've been saying is that they ought to, which is an entirely different kettle of fish.

Frost scored again, checks notes, hmm 2 feet from the net.

You made a similar comment when he scored last game in which I bit my tongue. You are spinning a little narrative here that he's afraid of corners and going to the net. Par for the course of your anti-Frost narrative.

I guess this didn't happen last year when he went to the net:

Nope. He only learned to goto the net this year because of being scratched.

Do you want many more examples of Frost going to the net, or even when he goes to the net while also not scoring a goal? Because he has been going in close throughout his career, even in his first year as an NHL player when playing with Giroux.

You really thought this team was going to tank?

They're actually able to skate with almost any team now, and they've upped their skill.
The biggest problem they have is maintaining puck possession, too many turnovers in the D-zone, have trouble controlling play in the O-zone and don't take the puck away enough.

But they went toe to toe with Vegas, the biggest team in the NHL, and with Nashville, the most physical team (Trotz is the GM, you'd expect anything different?).

The problem for the Flyers is they used to be small and slow, now they're just small.
TK had his worst game of the season b/c he was bounced around on a regular basis, Brink was MIA.
Even Poehling struggled along the boards.

Frost scored again, checks notes, hmm 2 feet from the net. Gee, maybe he's learning something?

Some good things, Michkov is looking more comfortable 5x5, Frost is skating better (I think the 5 games off helped a lot, there was something wrong with him physically), Andrae continues to play well, Risto is now in beast mode.
They get dominated for 80% of the game and then capitalize. This team isn't good.

All of his 5v5 shots from 23-24 and 22-23. It’s pretty clear he prioritizes getting shots from high danger areas.

That game was like watching a game of keep-away. It would be funny if not for the fact that they're all multi-millionaires.

There is so much panic in their game. They can't complete 5 foot passes without turning it over.

TK, for all the top level stuff he does, is one of the worst at this. He will way too often pass it *backwards* or parallel to someone 5-10 feet over that is completely covered by the other team. He would have had a clearer path himself, but way too often just makes that dumb pass.

Still can't decide if this team is just too mid to execute, or that the coaching is too mid to put a coherent system in place.

Regulation wins. Is this good? Tied for 32nd.

Thank you for doing this as always. This is the best part of the access to information we have now. It’s not checking a model or anything like that. What I appreciate more than anything is we all have the ability to put statements like this to the test.

I would then argue it becomes put upon all of us to test these theories out before letting them air, but I know that one isn’t going to be unanimous. If you’re not sure how to check them out, there are plenty of people around here who are happy to teach you or take a quick look themselves.

Laughton and Poehling are undoubtedly the biggest turnover machine forwards (in the d zone or on their side of the neutral zone) on this team.

Not sure how good this data is (NST), but giveaways per 60:

Forwards
Laughton 4.89
Poehling 4.28
Michkov 4.22
TK 4.21
Farabee 4.18
Couts 3.73
Frost 2.94
Tippett 2.77
Hathaway 2.63
Brink 2.35
Foerster 2.32
Cates 0.87

Defense
Grans 6.24
Seeler 5.18
Andrae 5.07
Drysdale 4.91
York 3.87
Sanheim 3.56
Zamula 3.37
Risto 3.26

I looked at 2023-24, and the numbers are far lower, doubt the team changed that drastically, so there may be a difference in how this number is determined this season.

It's pretty amazing that this team is .500.

Also hard to believe Nashville is more putrid than the Flyers. They sure didn't look like it last night!
They added a bunch of big name FAs in the offseason, Marchessault, Stamkos, Skjei.
Year before, Nyquist, L Schenn, ROR.

Trotz seems to be patching for the short-term as he adds young players to the roster and accumulates draft picks (3 1st rd picks). Also moved out players from the previous regime, Fabbro, Tomasino, both 1st rd picks.

Streaky team last season, they started slow then had a 16-0-2 run.

I guess I'm in the minority because I don't believe in Tanking. It's wrong in so many ways. The team should always put the best product "possible" on the ice. In my opinion the current leadership took on years of bad management and is now headed in the right direction.

Goal differential is -13. When Ersson is out the goaltending is based on luck. That tells you that these wins are a mirage. A losing streak is in the future. Just a matter of time. Reality will catch up to them.
Both Fedotov and Kolosov had horrid starts, both are playing better.
Fedotov last five starts +0.05, Kolosov last 3 starts -0.05. [GA - xGA per 60]
So they're basically average goalies the last few weeks.

Which is what we saw last season, as long as the goalies are average or slightly above, this team is competitive, when the goalies suck, the team sucks.
No surprise, they're not talented enough to outscore teams.

All publicly available data comes from the RTSS dataset. Giveaways, takeaways, and hits are a persons subjective opinion on what constitutes a giveaway, takeaway, hit.

Shot attempts variations have significantly less ambiguity, I’d argue no-ambiguity, so they are more trustful.
