nice win, Barzal is beyond awesome, can't believe how the Islanders got him, still waiting for the bottom to fall on him, I mean how are the Islanders getting someone like that as the #16 pick? he is looking like a top 3 pick at least, I never expected him to be as good as he is, figured he'd be a typical run in the mill 1st rounder maybe getting about 40 points a year

It really is amazing how we win these games, feels like the 1980's a little if you win games that you shouldn't. Barzal is the big difference for this team on so many levels, his puck control, his possession, his ability to get to loose pucks, he has surprised me, he is a very dominant player. We are where we are because of him.

JT - he doesn't touch the puck much in a game these days, we will need to get the puck on his stick more often, he barely ever gets a touch.

Seidenberg actually was very good tonight, I prefer him over Hickey and Pulock (since Pulock isn't doing much offensive for now)

Lee had a very bad game, almost seemed like he was sick or something, his reaction time wasn't where it should be... Ladd, Eberle, Clutter, Zeke, Leddy, ... all strong. JHS was great tonight, no mistakes.

The biggest player issue continues to be Lady Jane Nelson... she contributes nothing defensively, and if she isn't contributing offensively, it is a waste of a player. That line with Beau and JHS isn't good.

I was wondering where Willem Dafoe has been the past few years, didn't realize he coached a hockey team in Philly and he is the worst coach in the NHL, his tenure is a lot like Cappy/Snow... since Dafoe coached Hextall's kid in college.

Draft position can be meaningless, Strome was a top 5 pick and he is the 2nd coming of Ian Laperriere and guys like Benn, Zetterberg and Lee were taken later rounds.... when drafting people at such young ages... development is the best gauge of a player, "can this guy develop". Barzal at 23 is going to be scary

Agreed, I think we could offer up Nelson + to get a Bonafide 3c since Nelson is really a winger anyway. Whose out there that makes sense?

Additionally, adding a real top-4 D would go a long way.

Goaltending, we are stuck with Greiss and Jaro.

Was just saying the same thing to my son. I think we are positioned well to make some moves before the deadline (assuming we stay relatively healthy). Nelson, maybe some of our D depth at the bridge and all of our picks could be chips to get a face off specialist as 3C and a top 4 Defensive Defenseman. If we do that I would feel really good about this team.

Pulock has not been getting points but he has jumped up into the play and been dangerous offensively. Defensivley he has been spotty. Nelson is what he is. He will get hot again but he is just a lazy player who shows very little passion. If Brock had a bit more drive and determination like Lee he would be a 30 goal scorer. Barzal is a stud. Not only does he have skill but he's pretty strong and plays a gritty game as well. Not afraid to throw a hit or work hard to get the puck.

Barzal fell in that draft. He was slotted to go top 5 at the beginning of the season, but he got an injury ..

I think at this point we are getting more offense from Mayfield he had 2 points tonight than what Pulock has done despite joining the play, still think he is talented but we are very good with Seidenberg in the lineup for some reason.

I think Nelson is beyond help now,, he doesn't hurt us, but JHS needs to be playing with a guy who can finish, he is on a line with a limited Beau and and useless Nelson. He'd have more fun playing with Cizikas

I agree.Isles seem to miss out on this type of high end, young talent.
Sometimes thru their drafting choices and sometimes just draft position.Nice to see the isles get the kid with the terrific upside and have him developing so well.

Totally disagree. Draft position is always meaningful, but what means more is...

Who is making those picks.

snow has blown every top 5 pick he's had minus the no-brainer Tavares. The same way that the Bruins blew it not taking Barzal with one of their 3 picks just before the Isles did.

it makes you wonder if Snow had his sights set on one of those picks the Bruins got, than when Barzal fell in his lap he said "f*** it, I might as well take him"

It is a crapshoot, you can't project NHL talent beyond no-brainer top 3 picks for the most part and then there are players that may have been better if they ended up on a different team, too much variance

I could not agree more, but when you see...

  • Hall for Larsson
  • Johnasson for Jones
  • Drouin for Sergachev

...Should tell you what it takes to get a top D-man. We don't really have any blue chip assets like that so it would take a ton.

Well not so sure. We have two firsts, two seconds, beau, ho sang, and Pulock. A collection of those = value.

Yes, I'm starting to believe we need a legit face off guy to patrol a line. I would dangle Nelson to start testing the waters

Barzal made that Ladd goal happen. His puck possession and cut to the middle created time and space for his line mates to get in position. That’s the beauty he brings in his game.

Also hattip to Eberle on the goal, beautiful hands in tight. Very little time and space.

Ladds been good over the past few weeks. Looking like a 5 mil. player.

And yeah, those calling out Greiss need to consider the stops he made in the 3rd period to keep this team in it.

D needs a lot of work.

2015 was a strong draft. There was legit reason for about 7 guys to be picked 6-12(13 if you counted Kyle Connor). Only reason he remained at 16 was because Dallas and Boston thought they were smarter then everybody else

And let's hope Ottawa wins in regulation...And Vancouver does the same. Then tomorrow night could put the Isles #2 in the conference.

Well so much for that. Caps also won so other then Penguins losing and maybe the Rangers will lose in OT? not such a great night

ETA: jixed it Rangers win

Josh Bailey now leads the team with 27 points in 22 games, is 9th in league scoring, and one point back of McDavid of all people. Dude is having an absurd year, just putting that out there.

The stats are getting very interesting, Leddy is on 70 pace point, Barzal is on over 80 pace for a rookie... and even a guy like Pelech is looking at 37 points

Really would like Bailey back, but after this year I am not sure it is feasible to pay him, I am sure his agent is going to encourage him to test the market, and if he is going to wind up with around 70+points you know a team is going to give him a hefty contract

No way the Isles let him go. He produced last year, and he's been lighting it up this year. Plus, Johnny likes him which is always a positive. Can't see them letting him walk.

so if it is going to take a 6X6 would you pay him that? considering the hefty contracts the Islanders are going to be faced with in the future it could be a burden especially if this season is a fluke, and if he is going to keep it up I can see Baileys agent looking for that

I agree about Greiss, there were a few shots where if Halak was in net lately would of went in and it would of been game over. Greiss battles, is he the best? not really but he is a gamer.
