Drury: ChatGPT, help me propose a trade with Buffalo for Braden Schneider

ChatGPT: I recommend a trade with the Sabres for Drew Stafford, a quality right wing who would make an immediate impact to the Rangers' top six, in return for Schneider.

Drury: But isn't Stafford retired? I played with him in Buffalo during our memorable playoff run in spring 2007.

ChatGPT: Oh, yes, my mistake. Instead, I recommend Maxim Afinogenov, another quality right wing who plays for the Sabres.

Drury: OK, thanks. nevermind

FWIW, which isn’t much… plugging the prompt into ChatGPT came back with Schneider + 3rd for 20OA

When I pushed it to give a deal with a roster player, it came back with Schneider + 3rd for Jack Quinn or Schneider for Krebs + 2nd

It doesn’t matter, but your joke made me curious what it’d actually say

I think the top 4 will go (in some order)

McKenna
Stenberg
Reid
Malhotra

If Bjorck is taken before us then Reid would be the way to go. Of course, that leaves us in the unfortunate position of collectively holding our breath and hoping we don't pick someone out of left field and leave Reid on the board.
Reid or Bjorck is a home run. Need and BPA

If Drury passes on Reid he should be fired same day

GIVE ME SOMETHING TO GET EXCITED ABOUT

I'd trade everyone that's not glued down... ( Trocheck, Schneider, Borgen... keep asking Mika ) Go full on greenhorn young lineup... Try to get another lottery pick next season... Then finally try to compete in 2027-2028

I don't know how the depth is next draft... but I know the top10-15 is stacked with great prospects. I do not expect to be the worst team in the conference again but I don't think Sully makes the playoffs for the 5th consecutive year... Highest paid coach btw

Chase Reid, RHD, Sault Ste. Marie

Reid took a huge step over the last 12 months and is the No. 1 defenseman on both Wheeler’s and Corey Pronman’s rankings. Pronman has Reid as the No. 1 player in the entire draft. Reid is a 6-foot-2 right-handed defenseman who had 48 points in 45 games in the OHL this season. He’s committed to play at Michigan State next year. The Sabres have ties to that program, so they should be plenty familiar with Reid. The way he plays fits the way the Sabres’ defenseman impact games. He has the skating and puck-carrying ability to be a one-man breakout machine. And his defensive game has made a jump, too. The Sabres’ prospect pool is loaded with right-handed defensemen, but Reid has more upside than any of them.

Reid is committed to Michigan State for 2026-2027.

BUF's 2023 2nd rounder Maxim Strbak went to Michigan State for three seasons. They have their 2024 6th rounder (Geary) there right now and about to enter his senior year. Both Strbak and Geary are defensemen, so presumably BUF is familiar with the program's recent development of defenseman.

Michigan State's coach is Adam Nightingale. Adam was a video coach for BUF in 2016-2017. His older brother is Jason Nightingale, who is the Assistant Director of Amateur Scouting for the Buffalo Sabres.

There may be more connections BUF has to the Michigan State program, but those are the ones I've found so far.

Alberts Šmits, LHD, Munich (DEL)
Šmits might be the most pro-ready of the defensemen in this class. He played for Latvia at the Olympics and the World Championship this year after playing 38 games in Finland’s top pro league, where he had 13 points. Both Pronman and Wheeler project him as a top-pair defenseman capable of playing a strong two-way game due to his skating, length and puck handling. He also has a huge shot. Both Pronman and Wheeler reference his competitiveness, a trait that always appeals to the Sabres’ brass.

Viggo Björck, C, Djurgården (SHL)

Size is the big question mark with Björck, who’s 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds. But he plays bigger than that in part because he clearly has hockey strength. The Sabres haven’t shied away from shorter players in recent drafts when the competitiveness is there. That’s not a problem with Björck, who has a non-stop motor. Hockey sense is another trait the Sabres always covet, and he has plenty of that. Those two things make Björck a name to watch at 4. Björck is a game-breaking playmaker who had nine points in seven games at World Juniors and then had an impressive showing for Sweden at the World Championship.

Carson Carels, LHD, Prince George (WHL)

Carels doesn’t have the offensive upside of some other defensemen in this class, but his compete and physicality got high grades from Pronman and Wheeler. Wheeler noted that, “NHL scouts are high on him as a future stud D who plays winning hockey, even if he has a little less NHL offense than the names ahead of him here.” He also had 73 points in 58 WHL games this season, so he’s not a stiff offensively. He skates well and has a heavy shot.

Keaton Verhoeff, RHD, North Dakota (NCAA)

Because he played college hockey this season, Verhoeff didn’t put up the eye-popping stats that others in this class did. Wheeler doesn’t view him as the same level of skater as the top defensemen in this class, but he moves well for his size. He’s prone to mistakes at times, but he ran a power play at North Dakota, has a big shot and is a heavy hitter. Pronman has him as the No. 3 player in the entire class. Wheeler wrote, “Teams are obviously attracted to the combination of size, body, work ethic, leadership, poise, shot and decent skill. He has upside, and if his boots can improve and decision-making on both sides of the puck can be polished, there could be real upside.”

Sharks listening to offers for pick 2
They want current great player to help now.
Trocheck, Schneider, Spence?
Do we need to add Gavi?
Stenberg, Bjorck for the next 10+ years would be nice

Man, I wish the team was ever in a position to listen to takers on a 2OA spot, holy crap. Like I have enough studs-in-making already and don't want any more

That team is so ridiculously stacked. They’ve hit on nearly all their top picks

I’d keep the pick and #9. They should take 2 of Reid, Carels, Smits and/or Rudolph.

You’re set. That team is @mas0764 wet dream

I noticed that our 2nd round pick from K'Andre Miller got downgraded to the 64th OA. Drury, you idiot. How was that not a conditional 2nd. Drury manages to put impossible conditionals on every trade except this one. Carolina winning the Stanley Cup upgrading the 2nd to a 1st should've been a no-brainer. Even getting a dumb conditional 4th like the Panarin trade would have been welcome over this downgrade.
It’s a good pt, but contending teams usually don’t like to lock up all their 1sts with conditions given that limits their deadline currency.

exactly who I was thinking of

mas all of a sudden recording Shark Week on Discovery and wanting to know everything about the species

Mission Impossible.

Rangers grab Ethan.

I will jackhammer F5 on Friday until I die, to get here if that happens.
Won't be completely surprised if Drury takes a swing on Cullen or something.

Interesting to note since he took over as GM, Drury has drafted:
Canadiens - 10
Americans - 10
Sweden - 4
Finland - 2
Russia - 2
Other - 4

Has only drafted a non-North American once in the first two rounds (Sykora at 63 overall in 2022)

if they didnt hit the Celebrini jackpot they would look rather mid. Everyone else is just potential at this point
Yeah, a 56 point difference between Celebrini and the next highest scorer is nuts. Then their next two high scorers are vets. Their NHL roster is actually a bit thin on depth so they're still in the "hope these prospects really develop into the players we hope they'll be" stage, along with probably needing to acquire new vets soon.
