Latvia has now won a game at this tournament 3 years in a row. They are like a Finland-lite punching above their weight, working hard and playing smart, and now it’s starting to pay off for them. And doing it without a top flight league.

Lmao.

Canada purposes schedules a cupcake in game two when they host too.

Should have gone back to McKenna
Can we talk about how those dopes sent him to the box to serve the minor before they had to be told he wouldn’t be able to go in the shootout if he did?

Bonk and Luchenko getting the experience of being a Flyer .... disappointing their fans
Not winning a game in regulation? Yup.

Watching Latvia was a Hakstol flash back, play conservative, keep it close and eek out the win.

Molendyk is a slick puck moving D-man, but he's gonna have to add serious strength, lost some key puck battles. I can see why Flyers took Bonk over him, it's an apples and oranges thing. Molendyk is too much like what they have, but not better (we'll see if he turns out as good as York or Andrae, and he's not as physically talented as Drysdale). Bonk is what they don't have, a young two way full sized D-man. Bonk isn't as nifty, has a better shot, is more physical. I suspect Bonk won't score as much but will play more minutes in the NHL.

McKenna's got a lot of hype, but taking into account he's only 17, I don't see an elite player unless he makes a big jump next year, talented, a high pick next draft, but not the sure fire #1 I expected.

In fact, one strange thing was how little they played Jett 5x5, because I didn't really see anyone who jumped out at you, Catton was good but not special and so on. Jett looked a little lost when he was in there, but also made a couple nice passes. A number of players seemed to try to do too much on offense instead of looking for linemates.

The Latvian goaltender had a heck of a game, though it helped that the Canadian team often seemed too intent on the pretty play and didn't crash the net enough.

Never seen a guy more confident evaluating after a single preliminary WJC game. Wish I could’ve read your McDavid WJC takes in his D-1.

McKenna is 100% the 1OA pick in 2026, barring massive injury or a collapse of the highest order.
