Listened to the DNVR mailbag podcast and they talked about Malinski's next contract. AJ made the point that Malinski had a stretch this season with 2 points in 42 games so he wouldn't have much of an argument for a big raise, so he'd just QO him.
I looked at the stats myself and he did indeed have that stretch of 2 points in 42 games. Or even worse, 1 point in 37 games (11/11 to 2/4), a span where he played 721shifts with 564:28 TOI.
QO'ing him would save some cap next season but would walk Malinski straight to UFA do that probably doesn't make sense imo. It would be one way to save ~$500k of capspace though, which could be important.

The Avs will likely do what’s necessary to make next years team good enough to make a run again. If they can get Nelson signed, they have a legitimate chance of going into the season with all the major pieces in place with no important position empty. Their 1-3Cs, top 4 D and goaltending all locked up. They also have top wingers under contract.
They can’t bring back the exact same team, but they can keep the foundation together. That likely means it’s more important to keep Malinski at the lowest cap hit rather than getting him signed medium to long term at a bigger hit.

Malinski's negotiations will be very interesting to follow.
He didn't produce much for the bulk of the season, and was just playing ok for the most part, with some good and not so good contributions.
Then after the deadline he seems to have had a confidence boost, probably after not being traded, and now he's playing very well. Fairly solid defensively, though still has issues getting hit hard with the puck below his own goal line, and he's scoring more, which the Avs really needed from the blueline IMO.
But we haven't seen him in the playoffs yet. That will also have a big impact on his next contract.
So all of that makes his negotiations interesting, but he also turns 27 in the off season. These are the years for him to maximize his earning potential.
I'd say QO him if you need to save money, but if he plays ok in the playoffs, try to get a bargain 2-3 year deal instead, since he hasn't had much time to prove himself and command a big deal.
Problem is, does he want to sign a bargain 2-3 year deal at 27 years old? Probably not. He might just want the QO so he can go to UFA anyway.
The Avs options are very limited on the blueline. Almost no future assets to trade, not much money to spend on UFA's, and they haven't had many draft picks lately, and don't pick that well outside the first round anyway. Behrens and Gulyayev are mystery boxes.
If Malinski plays well in the playoffs, the Avs should probably find a way to keep him a bit longer IMO. Unless they have another plan for a big name two way D.

I wonder if there's an offer sheet risk with Malinski.
The Avs probably can't afford to go higher than $1.5m-$2m, but if he continues his current good play into the playoffs he might look to cash in this offseason, and with RHD's being in high demand a team might think that it's worth giving up a 2nd round pick to offer him a contract in the $2,290,458+ range. Even a $2,290,457 AAV offer sheet would potentially be awkward for the Avs to match and it would only cost a 3rd round pick.
Granted offer sheets are pretty rare, but we already saw St Louis do it twice last year with Holloway and Broberg in that price range so it isn't out of the realm of possibility that it happens with Malinski.

Malinski to me is not worth more than 1.5M

If a team offersheets him, you take whatever it is 2nd or 3rd and walk away.

That's a fine take, but the issue then is that the Avs would need to find a replacement for Malinski at the same time that they need to find a replacement for Manson, and with the RHD market being really sparse. Finding a 3RHD for <$1.5m would be tricky.

I don't necessarily disagree, but the problem is they're going to have a hard time finding D men, and they already have a serviceable one in Malsinski at least.
Turning a UFA into an asset is good, but aside from using it in a trade, it's only as good as the player they pick, which tends to be not so good for the Avs outside the first round.

Would have no impact.
Cap is projected to rise like $9M the year Necas is a UFA I believe. His raise shouldn't even be half of that quite frankly.
