Speculation: 2025 Trade/Free Agency Thread

If we went all out to sign Marner, I’d hope it isn’t for 8 years. I can’t locate the YouTube video but it shows that most stars regress big time around 32. Having Marner through 36 would mean half of his years would be an albatross especially for an offensive only player. I’d rather make him the highest paid player in the league but for 5 years only. But he’s likely going to sign in a big market and not Anaheim…

On a side note, anyone watch Lucas Mercuri play? I wonder what the Hurricanes want in return… I think we should take a stab if it’s only a late round pick. 6’3, right shot, two way center. Now that we’ve collected higher end prospects we need to find the complementary role players. Got to throw darts for maybe young Killorn type.

I will agree that he will make us better, but not 14M better IMO.

Contrast that with say 50-60G Matthews, for instance, and I think that goal production would absolutely make us 14M better. Those first 2-3 years don’t require waiting for players to improve, because we have plenty of guys that can feed him the puck. Yes, I know he’s not available.

I tend to agree. He's a better player than some of his critics say ... but that said he's not the perfect fit for us either.
Over the past 35 years (or since the inception of both the SJ Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks) how many true UFA superstars (i.e. Marner caliber) have signed with ANY of the three California teams? The answer can be counted on one hand and still have fingers left over. When was the last one?

Niedermayer?

If tkachuk is available everyone here would be on that one.

but we’re not allowed to talk about that
Why don’t you give the Tkachuk talk a rest. He’s given no indication he wants to leave, his team is actually showing more signs of life than ours and harping on him puts you right up there with all the MB bozos who wanted Z when he still had value. If you don’t like others doing that to us, why keep doing it do others?

Acquiring a player of Marner's caliber as a UFA would be a massive win for the ducks. Adding an elite player without giving up assets (other than $$) has a huge impact on the team.

Marner may be flawed, but he'd be a huge UFA addition and any duck's fan should be in favor of that. The cap doesn't matter to the ducks.

Some do and most don't and that's part of the problem. Until he says he's going UFA, the likelihood is that he stays. That eighth year is worth a lot of money.
That's fair, but until he signs there is still a chance he goes ufa, and I feel like the deferred money trend could offset the 8th year.

A point to everyone saying sign him for 8 years - the only team that can do that is Toronto. Everyone else needs to trade for him, and I do not think he’s worth more than a 7th to trade for his rights unsigned, and I absolutely don’t think he’s worth what it would cost to get him on a sign and trade.

Guentzel might be a good comp for Marner and Guentzel was traded for a 3rd without a signing guaranty (at least not a formal one).

I'd give up a 3rd for early negotiations rights. Wouldn't get 8th year but an extra couple weeks to negotiate would be nice.

The Ducks would be able to offer the eighth year if they acquired him via trade.
Pretty sure that's not true. If I recall correctly the player has to be on the teams reserve list at the trade deadline to offer an 8th year. Guentzel only signed 7 years in tampa

You are correct. Unfortunately, as you said earlier that makes it even tougher for the Ducks to offer a competitive contract for Marner. Unless he really really really wants to play here I just don't see it happening. And honestly, neither do you.

The deferred money does not work like you think it does. His cap would still be in the $14M range. He’d just be getting a ton more money than Frank got in 10 years. It’s all about his present day value combined with the time value of money.
