Colton probably is our best trade chip to recoup some of the assets we've moved in the last couple years tbh... He wont return all of them but I'd say his value is probably still as good, maybe slightly better then what we gave up for him, especially if he has a strong playoff run and with a favorable contract.

IMO they might be able to use him to get like a 2nd + 3rd/4th type of return.

Hmmm. I feel like he has very little value but maybe you're right. Prices were stupid this deadline

Not even deadline related.

He can score 20 goals, 40 points, can play Center or the wing, can play pretty much anywhere up and down your lineup, plays physical and a cup winner.

A lot of teams would have interest in a guy like that. And at $4M his contract is going to very quickly look really good this summer once we see what UFAs get in the new rapidly rising cap world.

So how much money do we have to re-up Nelson next year? Assuming we keep Drouin and Lindgren at 4M AAV each and Landy isn't on the payroll. @Richard88 ?
Right now we have the roster below with $8.7m in space and 18 guys signed to one way deals next season.

Guys to sign:

Nelson
Drouin
Vesey
Kiviranta
Malinski (RFA)
Lindgren
EJ

I've included Landeskog because his interview strongly suggests that he's coming back, but obviously if that's not the case there's another $7m to play with and things are easier capwise.

Let's say they fill 6D and 7D with $800k bodies (eg. EJ and another Kylington/Brännström/DeHaan type reclamation). That would leave a 20 man roster and $7.1m to re-sign Nelson and Drouin.

If Nelson walks that's around enough to sign Drouin $4m, Lindgren/Malinski $2m, plus a 13th forward at $1.1m. That's the most straightforward option, and dare I say the most likely option given the rumours of Nelson going home as an UFA.

The Coyle acquisition hedges against Nelson walking, since Coyle can slide onto 2C next year in the worst case that Nelson walks. And his acquisition (a 2c/3c with term) does somewhat indicate that CMac thinks there's a real risk that Nelson will walk.

Nelson turned down 3 X $7.5m from NYI apparently (not sure if the source was legit though), so presumably it would take 4-5 X $6.5-7m to re-sign him. If you sign him to that you would have to move Wood or Colton to make room for Drouin/Malinski.

Either way it doesn't seem overly complicated to figure things out if Nelson wants to re-sign. You just need to find a taker for Colton and/or Wood to make room for Drouin/Malinski/Lindgren.

I think the preference would be to re-sign Lindgren as an UFA, but realistically he probably prices himself out. If he's willing to take ~$2m though I think you try to fit that in and move Malinski to recoup some futures.

On a lesser note it would be nice to re-sign Kiviranta but realistically he'll be pushing for a raise and the Avs will probably prefer to give that role to someone with a cheaper caphit, like Ivan $845k; Prischepov $807k; or a <$1m UFA.

Yeah Colton at $4m X 2 years would definitely be appealing to some GM's, especially with the UFA market about to explode.

Yeah, Wood, Colton and Manson in that order are the salaries you move assuming other guys like Lindgren, Nelson and Drouin take reasonable to team friendly contracts that match their role.

I'm giving Drouin 8 years at a 3.5 to 4M AAV front loaded and signing bonus heavy year to year. Lock him into finishing his career with Nathan MacKinnon.

Give Nelson 6 yrs all the way to 40 trying to get him in the 6 to 7M range. Him and Toews are very close, and f*** Minnesota.

Necas will be a big X factor going forward, but the precedent is set.

There is definitely a path to keeping this team 90% intact if they show worth it.

I think you always prioritize Nelson and Drouin over Landeskog. Most likely he'll just be on LTIR and we don't need to worry about it. In the unlikely case that he does play and we can't send out enough salary to fit him, we can trade him because he'll only have a 12-team no trade list starting this summer.
That's grounds for having your Avs fan card taken away.

IMO Avs will paint themselves in the corner if Nelson walks and they go with Coyle (on the last year of his contract) at 2C and Drury at 3C.

Let's not forget that we no longer have Ritchie coming up and we're low in assets. It's going to be really difficult to get middle 6 centers for the rest of the window.

For there to be any chance, the Avs need to sign Nelson for next year.

Otherwise, trying to build a cup contender is nearly impossible.
The AVS have almost no draft capital and maybe 1 or 2 worthwhile prospects. It would be foolish to not sign Nelson.

If landeskog doesn’t come back, it’s a no brainer. Give Laney’s 7M to Nelson, give Colton’s 4M to Drouin.
That gives you your 4Cs, 4 top wingers and top 4 D set for next year. Fill as needed for the rest.

Anyone else find it kind of funny that they continue to use paper for double checking all this stuff, instead of just doing it on a computer?
You are right. All these papers could or should be digitally available and easy to transfer if needed.

Of course you could argue paper is safer way than having everything online.

Really impressive work by C-Mac. Sure, it cost a lot and we can get into why they were in those predicaments to begin with but he navigated it well.

My only real complaints would be that last 6D spot and dumb and dumber still being on the team.

Is Erik Johnson really at the root of why the team the way it is because he refused to waive. Interesting thought

This makes the most sense.

I really liked that he choose to come here

I’d give the option for linden on a 1year prove it deal… he’s young gives him a chance to make possibly more money in the long term.
