Of all the players to sign next year, I think Nelson is the most important. We can’t go back to 2C shopping and giving up more assets unless there is a UFA available which I’m not sure if there is
The UFA that’s available is Nelson.

The ability to sign this guy is literally, IMO, the difference in being able to compete next year or not.

It’s really that simple. We have a 2027 1st and 2nd and Guly and that’s pretty much it in terms of tradeable assets. Trying to trade for another 2C next season will be hell because we won’t have a Ritchie to dangle and put us over the top in trade capital.

I'd hate to use Behrens or Gulyayev, one of these two will be the Girard replacement, during a retool.

Yeah, I just meant in case Nelson didn’t wanna re-sign with the Avs, maybe there would be another UFA 2C available

I think re-signing Nelson is pretty high risk, but I don’t really see an alternative.

They have no 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round pick in 2025, or 2026. Their prospect pool is non-existent. They can’t trade for a 2C.

So you probably need to give Nelson a 3X $7.2M deal, or something like that and just hope he ages well.

I wish they could’ve gotten Boston to retain on Coyle. Like the player, but 5.25 is a lot for a 3C.

He turned down a 3 year offer from the Isles and he liked it there. We'd probably have to offer him 5 years and pray that he isn't dead set on finishing his career in Minny.

Offering 5 years to a 34 yo is dumb but we have literally no choice.

IMO the key to next year roster is tied to the chemistry of the 2nd line for the rest of the season. If what we saw last night from the 2nd line keeps up for the remainder of the season including the playoffs I think it is very possible both Nelson and Drouin take a bit less AAV but more terms in order to keep that line together. That line has everything you want from a complete line.

The only centers available are Nelson and Bennett. You have to ensure you sign one of them
Unless Brock is willing to re-sign for a very short, team friendly deal. Which he has no reason to do, there is really only one option. Signing a 34 year old to a longer term deal never works out. However I also don't think we'll win a bidding war for Bennett. Cmac is gonna need to swindle someone out of their center.

Bye bye Necas then.

We aren't getting a center better than Coyle for any of Colton/Manson/Girard.

They may have to just cave to his demands on term.

Quite frankly, maybe that doesn’t even matter because in 2-3 years this team pretty much turns into what the Penguins have been in recent years.

I think we’ll get to a point where they’re trading a bunch of players and trying to rebuild on the fly around Makar and an ageing MacKinnon.

Lol what?

Mack will be 32 and is a physical demon freak with conditioning. Makar & Necas will be 29..

Crosby and Letang are 37, Malkin is 38. They're a few more years ahead of us than you're thinking.

I'd say three to five years depending on what kind of team we can keep around them.

Toews, Lehkonen, Manson, Nichushkin… all these supporting pieces will be like 33+ in a few years. Nelson and Coyle will be like 37 lol

I think next year, they can still contend and potentially the year after.

After that it becomes very difficult. They probably move into that fringe playoff team territory.

If we get another cup in the next two seasons, I really don’t care what happens after that.

That's more realistic, maybe it was just the Pitt comparison that threw me lol.

Coyle I don't think I'd bet on aging quite as well as Nelson. Nelson's skating is good for his size.

8 years x4M for Nelson. Front load it so he gets most of his money early. Give us plenty of cap space to do other things while we compete. He’ll retire, LTIRetire or just be bought out for the second half of the contract.

Who gives a shit if we have 4M of dead weight on the cap 5 or 6 years from now. The team is going to be shit and the cap is going to be enormous.

My thoughts in (xx).

Other thoughts...

- Hurricanes made a mistake, fine, but so does everyone. Nonetheless, I actually like how they were able to recover from their mistake and get the deal they got from the Stars. Stankoven will fit in their system as Jarvis 2.0. BUT they then failed again by not flipping those two 1st rounders for NHL roster players. I am not talking about rentals, but trade those firsts for legit NHL players and be a team built on depth instead of having star players. That's where they lost the plot for me, but them going after Marner wasn't a bad idea.

- Oilers huge losers as well. I actually like Walman a lot, even though you can also debate whether he's a bit overrated as well. He fits the system and reduces all their other trash defenders from getting more minutes. BUT, to waste their little remaining cap they had on a defenceman who doesn't really fix their issues instead of going after a goaler, even Mrazek for a back up spot is insane. Everyone was so happy in Oil Land when they signed Skinner and Arvidsson in the off season, but I laughed how those moves do nothing for them except destroy their cap structure.

- I really liked the deals that Ottawa made. Cozens might never become a 60+ point centre, but his talent is worth the risk, while shedding out the 68 shoulder injuries Norris. Getting Zetterlund is awesome, I am a huge fan of him and wanted Avs to draft him big time. He's going to be a great complementary piece for them.

- I don't know what the f*** Detroit is doing. They already have a solid goaler tandem yet Yzerman goes out and decides to get Petr to keep the three-headed monster goaler rotation that NEVER works out? Craig Smith is having a good season and was a good get there, but wanting Mrazek in the deal is so stupid. If he was forced to get him, then okay, but get a third team involved so you can trade him to them.

- Why didn't Trotz just trade Luke Schenn for those two picks instead lol? Nonsense GM-ing there.

- Canucks folded their cards after seeing what we, Dallas, and Jets did lol. Jets needed a 2nd line centre big time if they don't think Lowry can get the job done. Tanev is an awesome get, but doesn't fix that issue. Schenn is overrated AF, he blocks shots, but doesn't have the same style of game that Chris Tanev has.

- Also, I watched half of the stream on SN and then the other half on TSN. Holy smokes, TSN was just a huge joke. They have really dropped a ton in quality the last decade. SN had a lot of good blokes on it besides McLean. I get that Friedmann gets a lot of hate on here by some posters for his speculation, but he seems like a good down to earth guy. On TSN, all their insiders definitely smell their own farts. Dreger, McKenzie, O'Neill, Gord Miller, and LeBrun all come across as giant pricks and are so unlikeable. Dreger got raked over the coals by Elliotte in the insider game as well. TSN were mega losers.

- AJ had a 0% success rate when it came to insider info yesterday...again. Please, we gotta stop quoting this bloke when it comes to deals, he knows nothing.

Coyle is capable of being a 2C. Last year he had 60 points with 25 goals, but he wouldn’t be a safe or long term solution at that position. In case Nelson leaves, I guess we can go with Coyle for a year, but then we have to find someone else

Canes couldn't use the 1sts because Rantanen took so long to think. They just ran out of time.

Rants took that long because his camp negotiated a better deal with the Oilers...then was told that Dallas was making a better offer to the Canes but he'd have to take a pay cut.
