Really no positive way to spin this for Colorado. Carolina's going to wind up getting better value than we did and in what will be our final dance and one last shot Dallas likely ends up getting better. You know Rantanen is going to be giving it his all at this point as well.

Dallas doing something stupid like Johnston++ and than giving Mikko 14m a year would be a win. Would suck to see Carolina get a young cost controlled C like Johnston but at this point doesn't really matter and Dallas paying a ridiculous price would at least soften the blow.
Meh, I don't care about having a dick-measuring contest with Mikko trade returns. Necas has added dynamism to the team, Drury has stabilized the bottom 6 centers, and we are less top heavy. We're moving forward, not back.

I don't know what Mikko's agent's last offer was, but in general I think it made sense to expect a long game given the the Avs took it to the wire with Landy. And they went into camp without a deal with Mikko last time.

Though Aho I believe said he texted Mikko a few days prior to ask if he could be traded, and I think he said it was a possibility.

If true, then that's the point his agent should have just made the $12.6M offer. Who knows if he did.

My guess all along though is the Avs are never really that serious about signing him for more a number that didn't start with 10, and they didn't think Mikko would take that given the market, so there was a lot of gamesmanship on both sides.
I agree with that. The biggest misstep of miscommunication here was timing, Rantanen's side thought it was going to go down to the wire like with Landeskog, but I feel Barrie is a better example in terms of negotiations, and the Avs were like, f*** that and decided to trade him. I do disagree on the amount, Avs were probably willing to give him MacKinnon's salary, but when his side was ready for a long, drawn out battle, I am very sure all his offers were in Draisaitl's range.

Da hell are you on about?

Mikko said that after getting traded. It's empty talk if they were playing hardball at a higher price in negotiations.

Exactly. Rants has been shit on by many ex players and experts since he left about money and staying in a good situation when you have it. He probably felt like he needed to say something, like Lehkonens daddy case. Let's see what kind of contract he signs with Dallas first.

Actions speak louder than empty words potentially. His contract will tell us what he thinks about.

It's pretty simple. Dallas gets better in what is Colorado's last push which isn't good? If they get him for Stankoven that's a pretty big win for them. Especially if he signs for something reasonable. C-Mac obviously didn't want Rantanen headed to a division rival. At this point it doesn't matter but it will suck if Carolina ends up getting a huge return for an extended Rants when we didn't even let other teams talk contract/start a bidding war etc.

Dallas nuking their depth/losing their C of the future in Johnston and giving Rantanen a monster bag would be a win for the Avs tho so I guess that would be a positive spin but I seriously doubt the Stars pay that much.

Is it good? Rantatitis might happen to Dallas like it did with Carolina. Who knows how it pans out.

Its terrible to see Rants in Dallas but I think they blow their depth on him(long-term especially). I think long-term it's a bad move for them. Short-term annoying especially to us because Mikko was our "franchise player" like Duchene too.

I do hope they pay stupid amount of money for him and handcuff their team.

Yeah that would be awesome but I guess I'm assuming it was the Hurricanes system that was holding him back. Guessing he'll be alot more motivated after getting moved twice but who knows. We haven't seen one in awhile and maybe those days are behind him but Rantanen does have those stretches where's a true game breaker.

I just don't think a team that's been a bad matchup in the West potentially getting better is a good thing in what will likely be our final push. IMO if it's just Stank/Bourque than they got better. If Dallas does something stupid like include Johnston/completely gut their depth than yeah that's a nice win. I don't think it's likely but with the current prices you gotta think an extended Rantanen might fetch something absolutely nutty.

I never thought he would need more than Nate anyway. Didn't make sense for him to think he could get that from the Avs.

And if you want $12.5M or $12.6M from the notorious hardball Avs who took negotiations up until hours before UFA with their popular captain, you're probably gonna have an asking price in the $13M's mid season.

So I think he's probably being honest.

Our conference is a blood bath this season. No matter what. It is what it is.

I am not more scared of Dallas because Rantanen. They were already very good.

I think we can challenge them with a proper goaltender, like we have one now.

Also, Cmac isn't done. I think he will still add more depth and probably traded Mitts.

This is gonna be an even bigger shit show if Mikko and Dallas don't come to an agreement tomorrow.

This is gonne be a shit show anyway... Imagine Carolina offering 100 Mill and he doesnt sign. Then he gets the permission to talk to Dallas and signs there within, what?, 36 hours for less than 100 mill?

I cant imagine a bigger "f*** you" to Carolina.

Question is, what is Dallas willing to pay for that 8 years..... And does Rantanen sign for less knowing he is just 3 months away from UFA and plenty of other teams making a pitch.........

If he signs in Dallas, Carolina should go for more than "Stankoven".....

They allready look like fools for this fiasco. In a year they wanted to go all in.....

The only thing that matters is whether or not the Avs got great value out of the deal, and it appears they did just that. They got a legit top line winger signed to a manageable cap hit who fits their system perfectly, and nearly as important, they got a good center who solidified the lineup as the 3C.

Doesn’t mean jack shit if Carolina gets something better.

You cannot be serious.

Huh? Is that even disputed at this point? I've argued back and forth as much as anybody since the cup win about how long our window is but at this point the Avs are all in on this season. I'm not even complaining. Yeah moves in the past look worse now and this should have happened sooner but atleast it happened. C-Mac was aggressive. Sure a long term solution would be way better but he solved our biggest need with the best available option.

Nelson is a 33 year old UFA who's either going to walk or the Avs will need to overpay big time. Hopefully by this time tomorrow what little assets we have left will be spent on making this team that much better. After this year it's basically just hoping to get lucky and going deep with a roster that will have holes. It's entirely possible we'll need a 2C by next year's deadline with nothing to spend.

If Nelson re-signs for something reasonable and doesn't regress than we could get 1 more year but I don't think it's that absurd to think this is the Avs final push with Makar/MacKinnon.

Yeah this is correct. Was just being salty. We haven't even seen the return yet either. Just thinking about what an extended Mikko would potentially get and the Avs didn't even have a bidding war/let other teams talk to him. Necas/Drury have been awesome.

At this point doesn't matter at all and honestly better for Colorado if Carolina gets Dallas to do something stupid like giving up Johnston. Their obviously not going to do that but seen a random tweet throwing it out there when I posted that and got super salty.
