Holy cow, Brampton is so screwed during this Tournament window. I don’t’ know what they are going to do. Rehkopf, Martone, Ivankovic, and Fibigr out. Plus the injuries to Leskovar and MacDonnell. They are so in tough for the next month.

As I mentioned in the 67’s thread, Team Canada has a habit of selecting a top 6 and a bottom 6. If a player is deemed not as capable of playing a bottom 6 role, they have to make the team in the top 6 role. Clearly they didn’t’ feel Senneke was as capable of playing a bottom 6 role.

Pinelli is very capable of playing a bottom 6 role and he scores goals at a high rate which gives him a bit of an advantage when Team Canada is selecting its roster.

Don’t’ get me wrong, I am NOT suggesting what Team canada does is the way they should do it but that has been their trend for quite some time now. They don’t select all the best players using the points standings as a blueprint.

IMO since the Olympic failure many years ago (forgotten the year but Hasek beat us in a shootout that Gretzky was forced to watch?) Hockey Canada has avoided picking an "All Star" team. Generally speaking it tends to payoff, of course not every year as we are not the only country that can play the game anymore. There are tough decisions to be made I wouldn't want to have to tell a kid he's not going but that's what these Hockey master minds are chosen for.

Yup. With the extra players they get to take, I would personally slant more towards picking a top nine and a bottom 3 +2. That’s 9 guys you look at for offence and five guys that you look at to play special teams etc. Those extra five guys are capable of stepping up as required. I think that is a better mix but it “seems” like they look at top 6 and bottom 6.

Just a quick note about Pinelli. 21 goals which is the same as Senneke and Martone. Same number of games.

Pinelli has been in on 41% of Ottawa’s goals. His centre all season (every game) has been Cooper Foster who is a winger. Their RW has been a mosh-mash of mostly underwhelming players. Their most consistent RW has been Kimi Korbler who has Zero Goals and Zero assists over 12 games. Pinelli has been mostly alone and he is driving close to half of Ottawa’s offence.

My issue with Pinelli and Team Canada is he tends to play right on the edge and takes more penalties than he should. Only 14 minors but mostly all have been of the overly aggressive kind. But, that tenacity is why he can play that bottom six role.

Looking at it objectively as a 67s fan, Pinelli would have been on my radar and would have received a selection camp invitation, but wouldn't have made my final cut.

The question is what kind of player is Team Canada getting in Pinelli?

He has elite shooting ability and is one of the OHL's best goalscorers. He does it with little help in Ottawa, and Ottawa's lack of offensive depth also means the opposition can lock-in defensively on the Pinelli line; however, Pinelli still scores plenty of goals (tied for 3rd in the OHL at the time of the camp invite).

He can create his own offense and while he's a goal scorer, he's not a goal scorer that is dependent on the playmaking ability of his centre. Foster is his centre in Ottawa, and Foster has always been a winger for the 67s.

Pinelli is a great PP asset; Ottawa's PP is 3rd in the league (last I checked). As OMG mentioned above he was in on 41% of Ottawa's goals at the time of the camp invite.

Pinelli is feisty, has a great motor, works hard at puck retrieval. I suspect if he does dress for any games in the tournament, he'll be #4LW. His skillset suggests he'd do well in an energy-type role, with some offensive upside for that line due to his elite shooting ability and ability to generate offense without star linemates. His limitations are really his lack of outstanding speed, and over-zealousness at times at puck retrieval or the silly after-the-whistle stuff.

Yeah, I totally agree. You don't see much of that stuff during WJHC games. Meant it more as an annoying part of his game at the OHL level.

Gibson is going to have a huge tournament if the game against Switzerland is any indication. The coaching staff uses him as their top defenseman 5-5 and obviously on the PK as well.

Pretty cool journey from being a guy who wasn't drafted high in the OHL or NHL draft to being seen as Canada's best defenseman by the top brass. It really shows what a good development program can do for these young men.

We’d be there if tickets weren’t so expensive. I would’ve wanted a Canada and US puck for Schaefer/Terrance.

I may have a Schaefer bobblehead to offer for pucks from the tournament.
