I hope Hockey Canada takes a serious internal look at this entire process to reevaluate. It's been a few years now the team selection process has been a mess.
2 of the last 3 years Canada won Gold. 5 of the last 10. I think in general it has been OK.

Martone sitting is actually insane when they’re struggling to score, complete bonehead move
Except in the games he did play he looked out of his element. Game was too fast for him.

You talk about loving taking our smugness away but most Canadian fans here were bellowing about the roster selections and how this team could very well underperform before the tournament even started.

That really doesn't sound very smug to me.

Coming into our teams thread and getting your rocks off making a comment like that does not suggest much humility from a fan of a team that has and is going to lose these games 99 out of a hundred times.

Something to think about.
the pre tournament pessimism regarding roster construction was concerning their ability to compete with the ”top” teams. You will be hard pressed to find any Canadian media or posters on this site who thought the Latvia game would be anything but a blowout.

Listening to a TSN radio segment before the game, the smugness was off the charts. Complaining that there there are too many of “these games” now that Russia isn’t in the tourney, saying the only way the Canadians would win by less than 8 was if they intentionally stopped scoring to avoid embarrassing the Latvians, etc etc. And this was coming from people who were part of the halftime panel/color commentary for the game.

So yes, smug is the right word for the Canadian attitude toward Latvia before that game.

I mean for a couple days fans have wanted Cameron to have more of a reaction to the undisciplined penalties. This is that, shooting the goalies stick away was arguably the worst one. But yeah I would not have made this choice either.
I think if Cameron wanted to make a statement he should have benched Rehkopf the rest of the game against the US versus scratching entirely against Czechia.

I'm talking about posters here not tsn.

Any of the top teams media would be saying they should win by 8 against Latvia, big deal.

yeah and the game has looked too fast for the whole team since the Latvia game

When it’s do or die time, you don’t leave a player like Martone in the press box

Rehkopf's penalties were really stupid, as were several others. This group is not playing as a team. Hard not to second guess some of the roster decisions, esp. leaving guys like Misa, Sennecke, Wood and Parekh off in favour of some of the stiffs they included.

if you’re saying there were posters here who saw the Latvia game as anything other than a blowout and tuneup/practice game for Canada, I’m gonna have to call BS on that

So many people on this forum and last year’s WJC forum were bashing me for Canada taking role players and grinders. People saying “Well they don’t fit a bottom 6 role, so there’s no point in taking them.”

Hockey is not rocket science. You go to even a beer leauge game at your local rink, and your best chance of winning is taking the guys that skate the best, have high IQ, can create plays and puck handle well. You only need a couple grinders and finishers around the net.
You take the most skilled players possible and put them in checking and PK roles and you ACTUALLY GIVE ICE TIME to them.

Hope those people and Hockey Canada learn their lesson. Even if we beat the Czechs and by some miracle, win the Gold, Hockey Canada and development in this country need a serious revamp.

I don’t know, I think focussing 100% of the complaints on roster construction and coaching suggests most Canadian fans attribute the loss to their own team’s failure rather than giving credit to a strong performance by Latvia.

If anything that confirms that smugness and hubris are alive and well.

I don’t think it’s specific to Canada and hockey.

When Saudi Arabia beat Argentina in the World Cup, people were asking a lot of questions about Argentina.

Now all the smugness is south of the border.

No, if he wanted to make a statement he'd be sent home entirely. Plays like this are unacceptable.

everyone has been hard on cowan, but turn him into a 5-5 guy, not a pp guy, grinding it out and playing the role of howe/beaudoin/cataford/pinelli he would be a great player. he's just not a go to guy. there are many better guys to pick for that PP shot. Heck, even Yager would look better on that side. I just don't get this roster.

I'm shocked they're sitting rehkopf. Thought he was the only guy that can sit in front of the net, take abuse, create chances for his linemates by sitting there, but yeah he's made some poor choices. the entire team has made mistakes. I just wouldn't be sitting him.

Leafs fans should be happy that people are hard on Cowan. Nobody is hard on Howe and Pinelli cause nobody gives a f*** and nobody expects anything. People are hard on Cowan 'cause the expectations are there.

Chances are for the future, if the expectations are there NOW.....the guy will play in the NHL later. Be happy people are hard on him. You might have the last laugh later on.

After reading this thread and twitter full of people blaming the coaching staff instead of the players I no longer wonder why players act like divas. Fans have lost the plot and accept subpar performances and just blame the coaches as easy targets instead. Tale old as time.

Well, you also have the people saying that slagging kids in the media is unfair which makes the staff much more fair game.

Biggest joke in the world. I've been around this type of athlete kid. These guys are not innocent and know exactly what is up. They should be fair game just as much as the 25 y.o NHLers are.
