Watching these playoffs, I've realized that our low shot totals in the 2024 playoffs should have been my least concern. Playoff teams play tight defense, making it significantly harder to generate shots. The stark difference between our regular season dominance over Florida (4-0-0) and our second-round elimination (losing 4-1 to the same Panthers) perfectly illustrates how playoff hockey becomes a completely different game.

The real issue was our lack of clean plays, particularly in critical situations. Our defense was suspect, our breakouts were atrocious, and our power play wasn't nearly effective enough. The Panthers demonstrated what effective special teams execution looks like in the playoffs - they maintained their 23.1% power play efficiency from their first round, staying consistent with their 23.5% regular season rate. Meanwhile, we struggled to execute the fundamentals that had worked all season long.

In all these crucial moments, our attention to detail fell well below playoff standards. The fact that we went from completely shutting down Florida in the regular season to being overwhelmed by their playoff intensity shows exactly what happens when execution breaks down under pressure. We were struggling to make clean plays, and it showed when facing playoff-caliber systems and defensive pressure.

While our poor breakouts did contribute to keeping shot totals low, that was more of a secondary effect than the primary problem. The inability to cleanly exit our zone and establish offensive zone time was symptomatic of the larger issue: we couldn't handle the step-up in intensity and systematic play that defines playoff hockey. Shot quantity became irrelevant when we couldn't generate quality opportunities or execute in the moments that determine playoff series.

As I post this shots right now in the Fla-Car game is 14-9 Carolina. These single digit totals deep into the second period are normal. Poor execution and poor attention to detail are not acceptable and that is why we were eliminated.
