I wouldn't expect that to be an issue here either because there is still a much larger payday in MLB he'll only get if he produces over this first contract.

I think it's a smart move by him. He gives up a few years of FA to guarantee himself $60m even if he gets hurt or is a bust. Plus it only takes him to age 30, he can still cash in after this deal.

Jackson Merrill also signed a stupidly team friendly 9/135 deal this morning. (can go up to 200 million total with bonuses) When the media pressed on it he said something along the lines of he wants to lock in long term with the Padres and city because he loves it. Something about how he's not into being greedy either too.

Probably helps the kid comes from a super normal background. Mom and dad were teachers so to him 135 million is probably more like 135 billion. Also probably hard to turn down 135 million guaranteed after one season in the bigs.

Campbell is similar. Guy hasn't even played 10 games yet and team is like here's 60 million. Sure you could bet on yourself, but there's no shame in playing it safe either.
