Red Sox/MLB 2025 Regular Season II

There's been a big push for versatility and athleticism in the roster and drafting natural shortstops or centerfielders who can play in the middle of the field, which is all well and good until you get to the point now when there are literally no first baseman left in the high levels of the organization after Casas's knee blew up. Worcester has a natural catcher in Hickey starting at 1B every night.

They're actually pretty darn lucky that Wong got injured when he did which spurred them to sign Grandal, and even more lucky that Grandal didn't opt out yesterday, because by default he's the new 1B rotating with Romy. Otherwise Refsnyder would have to break out his first baseman's mitt from his Yankee days.

I wish Raffy took spring training seriously and would learn how to play 1B. Or maybe they can find a way to give Yoshida some reps there in extended spring training to see if he could hack it (it might be the only way he'd be able to get out of Rusney Castillo Limbo).

Hickey isn’t playing 1B because of org need, he’s playing 1B because he sucks at catching but still has a pretty good bat. If he makes it to the bigs it will likely be mostly playing first

He's like 8 feet from the dugout but still needed a stretcher?

Any chance this opens a door for Anthony? He's not a first baseman but I don't want Romy Gonzalez as our everyday 1B. Maybe Devers to third and Bregman to first?

I wonder about Wilyer at 1B.

GG outfielder, if he’s competent there, he can play vs. righties, Romy vs. lefties.

Anthony in right?

And….I know that not just “anyone” can play first….but we’re not talking about some overweight plug at the end of their career moving there to play out the string.

If Devers is better, then Anthony can DH.

Devers is used to DH now, doesn't want to play in the field anymore.

Horrible injury but seems obvious Devers who plays on the dirt can move across ~ he’s going to need time but it’s harder to play 3B than 1B.

Anthony up and Duran, Rafaela, Abreu, and Devers work between OF & DH (actually not Rafaela but others can)

Duran LF
Devers 1B
Bregman 3B
Anthony DH/OF
Story SS
Abreu RF
Campbell 2B
Wong/Navarro C
Rafaela CF

Yeah that’s one of the worst injuries you can have in sports

Fortunately for Casas his game isn’t really built on speed or athleticism but the road to recovery will be long
