GDT: 2025 Playoffs - Conference Finals

Carolina seems to have a bit of a head in the sand defiant double-triple down on their type of players and how they play. It’s generating regular season success, but their top players don’t have those extra ‘skills’ to help the team take the next step - that’s on management.

Man on man works if you have the better players, otherwise it leaves your weaker players exposed when the talent gap is too large.

I'm wondering if Brind'Amour's seat is getting a little warm.
It shouldn't be based on this season's playoffs. Frankly I'm surprised the Hurricanes were as good as they were this season given the player moves the Canes made in-season.

How many wins in the ECF does he have? At some point management is going to look at that and change course I'd think, whether it's his fault or not (I think he deserves part of the blame for sure).

He has 1 win. To me ,this season is on the GM. The strikeout whiff on Rantanen that cost them Necas, the same unsteady goaltending that has always let them down in big spots are the main reasons. Again, I'm surprised the Canes finished 2nd in the Metro. If not for the Devils injury-wracked 2nd half of the season the would have slotted 3rd. They are a declining core. This one ain't on the coach.

I get that this year is a slightly different circumstance, but when you add it all up it doesn't look good. They're not super competitive in these games. They are averaging 2 goals a game and that's just not enough to get it done for a team that wants to play the playoffs exactly the same as they do the regular season (they average over 3 goals a game in the regular season). I'm just wondering when the plateauing will catch up to him, they seem to be getting worse over time and GMs always fire the coach to save themselves.

No, but Zito is.
Zito uses analytics, but he also is an astute talent evaluator and has balls in making moves that have benefited his team.

So I guess the rah rah rah envy of Tulsky is finally over. He can get put in the Dubas bin.

What? Tulsky didn’t have balls taking a swing at Rantanen?

I know you like a game where men are men, on the ice and in the office, but you’re creating a narrative all your own.

He took a miscalculated and lack of due diligence swing (that he admitted to) on that trade. Like I said when it happened, someone like Lou doesn’t make the trade w/o knowing he’s going to sign the guy. Tulsky admitted he had no clue on whether he would sign. It also backed up any chance to make other deadline deals bc he had to fix his own self created problem. That’s downright stupid. This after he made the Guentzel trade and lost him to UFA.

In the end, they don’t have to pay Rantanen, don’t have to pay Necas, and have a cost controlled Stankhoven, so Dundon is probably happy.

Carolina gambled and lost (in the here and now) on the Rantanen trade.

Still got to the conference finals without anything resembling a Rantanen or Necas to step into the void those two (combined) left behind after the trade deadline.

They'll be fine.

They're still chock full of prospects.

Gotta admit though.... Only 6 picks in this summer's draft. That's not like them.

***
Speaking of which, my bet is that they'll recoup picks before and/or at the draft.

Wouldn't even surprise me to see them move the 28th overall on draft day for something like two seconds or a low second and a low third, just to turn those picks into Zharovsky and Limatov.

One can argue they had an easier path to the conference finals vs other teams.

I see the Tulsky/Dundon combo wearing thin in the league and unattractive. Waddell was the adult in the room with league connections and relationships.,

Reigning Freddie in the 2nd round was just downright odd and just speaks to how that organization is running. Tulsky ain’t that good and it’s gonna show soon enough.

After all their departures on D I put a 20 dollar bet for them to not make the playoffs. They looked like they lacked a blue line outside of Slavin and depth up front.

I think if Rod leaves it’s for change in voice but not performance. I think they overperformed this year by a lot. Fortunate playoff opponents for sure but they definitely overperformed. Haven’t had a second line center in maybe ever.

Wouldn’t be a bad play. Helps with size down the middle too.
It would help, but not gonna be the needle mover for them.

Carolina just like Toronto (and NJ) are built with a bunch of players that don’t have that extra gear in the playoffs. They need to make changes, but you can see how these teams with their regular season success are afraid to rock the boat for playoff success.

Agreed, they need to add a little nasty up front and size on D.

Would be wild to see if Trevling lets Marner walk (yes) AND Tavares (maybe) walk as part of his ‘change the DNA movement.’

Without Shanahan, he’s the guy on these now.

Not to get too far ahead but does this Edmonton team have enough to beat the Panthers this time around? Draisaitl and McDavid seem determined but will it be enough?

And we have a rematch. Rooting for Florida. Still don’t like that whiny bitch mcdavid not accepting the conn smythe. Lose like a man, don’t pout.

That was some lock-down defense by the Oilers again in the 3rd period tonight. I guess they realize if they want to win they have to limit the amount of shots Skinner faces.
