A huge shout out to Sam Montembeault for his evolution as a solid NHL goalie. When he was claimed off waivers none of us saw an NHL goalie but he has worked hard, he has handled the pressure and has become a solid player for this team. Habs will need him to raise his game even more for the upcoming series.

People will never be happy, even last night some blamed him for the 1st goal that went off KG. I mean, I guess being a top 3 Canadian goalie isn't good enough in this city lol

Game #1 of the season.

We aren’t making the playoffs without that performance. Two points that we absolutely do not get without that coup by Monty.

This is a hard team to figure out. More like 2 teams really. When they are on they can beat anybody. When they're not it can get a bit ugly at times.

My personal opinion, if they can get Heineman/Armia going again and they are "on" as a team for lack of a better word they can take the Caps. But they'll need that secondary scoring in the playoffs like Heineman and Armia were providing before they both hurt their arms.

Some people have more fun hating on our players than cheering for the team.

Monty surpassed all expectations. He has his issues, sure, but we're not in a playoff spot without his performances this year. He played a lot when Primeau couldn't stop a beach ball.

That 4th line with a healthy Armia will be vital for this team come game 1.

Indeed.

And kudos to KH & co for their player evaluation and contract extension...

Monty is currently 33rd in NHL goalie cap hit & likely to be further down that list before the end of this deal :amazed:

10th in wins
T-7 in SO
20 in sv% (goalies with 40+ starts)
19th in sv% (40+ starts)

In those last games I think it showed that we were the youngest team in the league. What a valuable lesson to have them go through on a season where if games stopped mattering 2-3 weeks before the end of the season would have been considered a success.
Now we're the biggest underdogs in the league. Let's go out there and brake some hearts.

I always liked his attitude. Even during his first year, which was rough, you could see he had an NHL demeanor at the very least. I felt I was the only one that liked him. I thought he could be a good back-up. Never thought he would be where he is now. Quality goaler.

Huge game from him yesterday.

This is so huge to make the playoffs this year as we exit our rebuild. It is important for a number of reasons but let me highlight a few things about how f***ing good we are set up.

Nick Suzuki - 25 years old - signed at 7.875 for the next 5 seasons
Cole Caufield - 24 years old - signed at 7.85 for the next 6 seasons
Juraj Slafkovsky - 21 years old - signed at 7.6 for the next 8 seasons
Kaiden Guhle - 23 years old - signed at 5.5 for the next 6 seasons
Lane Hutson - 21 years old - ELC and player control for the next 6 seasons
Ivan Demidov - 19 years old - ELC and player control for the next 7 seasons
Alex Newhook - 24 years old - signed at 2.9 for the next 2 seasons

This is our core getting valuable playoff experience.....minus Newhook, but I included him....that will be with us for the next 5 seasons minimum.

We have others who could become core players as well....Reinbacher, Hage, Fowler even Dach if he could get himself healthy. I secretly pray to one day see the Dach from January 2023.

Above we have a group players entering their prime years
- a true #1 two-way centre.
- 37 goal scoring winger - with potential for more
- a power forward still developing into his big frame
- a very solid hard nose shut down d-men (Guhle at 23.....wow....imagine 27?)
- an elite ROTY offensive defencemen
- an all world teenager who might be the best of all of them
- a very speedy late rising centremen who could be an elite 3rd line centre and nicely fill in when needed on the 2nd line.

I for one would take this style of roster 100/100 over the Leafs big 4. We have a winner here.

Our prospects
- a future top 4 RD with excellent skating, awareness and breakout passes
- a potential middle 6 centre
- an NCAA best goaltender

Most importantly what do we have? Freaking cap space!

We are primed to pick off a UFA target or two. We can absorb a 10 million dollar player and still have room for Demidov and Hutson.

Oh....what else do we have? Motherf***ing draft picks to the tune of 12 picks this year including 9 in the first 4 rounds. 6 in the first 4 rounds next year.

This has been a masterclass in building a roster by Hugo.

Making the playoffs was such a key thing for this team. It is a necessary step in building to something greater. The disappointment of defeat could have had the opposite effect, but we did it.

I can't wait to see what the next 5 years brings for this franchise.

Two guys need a major KISS talk (KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!). Matheson because he can be extremely careless. Laine because he loves trying intricate low-success-rate things.
I'd love to see more effort from Laine on the boards. For a big guy he doesn't engage physically enough when it comes to board play. Too often he just reaches in or stands there.
