Prospect Info: 2025 NHL Entry Draft

Yeah what a good night to get those two teams out of the way quickly. At least that’s something. Wasn’t hoping to be excited for this years draft, so lets go with semi-excited due to the mix of progression this year and draft position

i wanted mcqueen before, but not really sold on him based off his play this season. comes off as a guy who has had success mostly because of his size more than anything else and that's obviously not going to transfer well to the NHL level. the back injury scares me off as well

Detroit and NYR both win so now the Ducks will finish in the 5-9 range heading into the lottery.

Games to watch on Tuesday

4pm PDT, Toronto at Buffalo. Toronto needs a point to secure Atlantic Div Champ.
4pm PDT, Columbus at Philly. Columbus has a slim chance to make the playoffs, but needs two regulation wins.
5pm PDT, Anaheim at Minny. Minny still needs a point to secure a playoff spot in their last game of the season.
.......................................................... (St. Louis is playing at 5pm and Calgary at 6pm)
7:30pm PDT, LA at Seattle. (LA secured home ice advantage on Mon night.)

Desnoyers is top of my list for the range we are in but I guess he will be gone. Eklund and O'Brien look nice as well.

Reschny also looks very tempting to me and he is having excellent playoffs.

Why is that?
After the first few guys this draft is much more of a crapshoot than usual. If we pick 9th we might as well be picking 20th.

That isn't to say in 10 years there won't be really good players who were picked in that range, but it's much harder to distinguish who they might be.

Today will pretty much decide where the ducks draft
Pittsburgh has one game left that they're not playing til Thursday. We have the tiebreaker on them. If we lose out and they get one point or more, they'd pass us.

Buffalo can pass us through numerous scenarios from both teams' remaining 2 games.

Not really rooting for it. The difference between 7th and 9th isn't significant. Still would rather the team try to play for pride to close out but my pessimism says it's unlikely.

So if you know that the 9th pick isn't worth much, don't you think NHL teams who do this for a living know the same thing? Why would they trade an established player for a crapshoot? Unless that established player is underperforming or overpaid or over-the-hill, or all three.

There are teams on all sorts of different development paths. A team might want to to start tearing their roster down, and a top 10 pick is still that. Some teams might like a player in that range more than most, and the pick is more valuable to them.

Where we are at, starting to ramp up in being competitive, players further along in their development, or just established in general, is probably better for us than another development project four-five years out.

If we pick higher, that is different. Higher probability of a good return and a shorter wait for it.

Ok. So you really don’t have any idea whether such a trade is feasible or any names that you think might be available but you’re just hoping that it’s possible. Got it.

??

Was there something about what I said that upset you?
Not at all. Just was wondering what your thought process was and what you considered an “established” player. Anything is possible but trading the pick for a good established player in the right age range seems very unlikely. In terms of possible targets, I’d be looking at young RFA’s. That’s the most likely scenario IMO. Any names in that group you like?

Tend to agree, but the type of player we would be looking for (top 6 forward under the age of like 25) likely wont be available for that pick.

Look at the list of players that fit that description and tell me who you think they should realistically target.

Peterka?
Vilardi?
Rossi?

I don't see any of those guys being moved for a package with the best piece being the 9th overall.

Would you trade the 9th for Mavrik Bourque?

I also question if peterka wants to stay in buffalo. We might be looking at RFAs who either can't be signed or don't want to sign ala DeBrincat.

Personally, no chance I would do that

I prefer to take a swing here and see how the chips fall. Use other lesser assets to go get someone

We’re going to need players on ELC’s 3-4 years from now that can score goals - thus, this pick is very important ImO

I would absolutely include this year's first in a package for an established player. I think the team needs to try to make the jump next year, and a middle-6 crapshoot who might make the team in three or four years doesn't help. If there's a team looking to create cap space or with an overcrowded situation at a position of need for the Ducks (winger, RD), then I would trade the pick along with another asset.

I would trade #9 for Bourque all day. His production has been outstanding for his age and I think he would pop with more ice time.

Put another way: we would be lucky to get his development path with whomever we take at that pick.
