I know people always drools at the thought of having star franchise center (rightfully so) but they are very hard to get unless you draft top overall in a very good draft year when there is one available for instance we missed twice with Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi. Otherwise forget it you won't get one. That being said, I think you can compete for a cup even without a franchise center but to do that you need 4 very good centerman that can share the loads offensively and are very good defensively. Boston and the Blues did it. IMO having a very balanced center line of Suzuki, Desnoyers, Hage and Beck would be exactly that. They have all have decent offensive attributes but they would also all be very reliable defensively. In that way, our franchise forward could be on the wing with Demidov we would also have very good other
good offensive winger in Caufield, Laine, Slafkovsky.
You need at least, an elite selke level 2 way Center to win if you don’t have a superstar (and even if you have a superstar).

Look at the last winner: Bergeron/ROR/Barkov/Toews/Crosby

We don’t have that yet, can Desnoyers be that kind of player ? I think he can (maybe not at the level of those guys offensively though)

Pronman today:
50% of scouts he talked to have Schaefer at 1
20% have Hagens
20% have Martone
And then you have some who like McQueen and Misa there.

Other two names he mentioned that can push for the 5th spot are Desnoyers and Frondell.

If we're out of the top 4 running, I hope we can get Frondell or Desnoyers. No interest in McQueen unless we're around #10 and he's a faller.

We'll know a lot more 5 weeks and see how poorly we fair with our treacherous schedule.

All the publications have Schaefer as the 1st Ov at this point.
By the end of the year, it will be even more obvious. He is definitely looking like the next franchise defenseman than will play 30min + dominate at both end and compete for a couple Norris. Even if we are loaded at defense he would be a no brainer for us.

Desnoyers. Like to draft Mrtka with Flames pick. If we get another late first Cootes. Center with speed. Genborg and Vanasgki in second round. Brzustewicz in third round.

Who had McQueen at 1? The same idiot that thought drafting Dach at 3 was a good idea?

He’s the best draft eligible defenseman I’ve seen in 15 years. Maybe not as overtly impressive as Dahlin, but far more of a lock to be a franchise two-way, all situations D.

I see people comparing Desnoyers to Danault, do you see a 40-50 point C in the show or more points ?

I don't see more than a 60 pts NHLer, but its hard with these kinds of players because you don't know how much they will control the grind or how well their tools will develop over time.

Boy, wish we'd have move for Dvorsky - we need to come out of this draft with Carbonneau

Warming up to the idea of Schaeffer as #1 pick. He is so young as well. Would have been a 2026 prospect had he been born 10 days later.

Martone and Misa being 2PPG in the CHL is great. They should be considered game breaking talents. #2 and 3 for me.

Hagens at #4.

Then there is everyone else. Habs drafting anyone of those 4 would be a success. Anyone else will feel a bit of a failure.

And adding Eklund with CGYs pick would be the cherry on top.

Caufield-Suzuki-Slaf
Laine-Dach-Demidov
Roy/Hage-Misa-Eklund
Heineman-Beck-Kapanen

Is a forward group that can win you a cup

My top 3 is set in stone for now with

1. Schaefer
2. Misa/Hagens
3. Hagens/Misa

But after that, it is less clear...

I really like the profile of Caleb Desnoyers... 6'2 C, great 2-way game, underrated offense, local kid, leader, great on the dots...

Could be a PLD or a Couturier type of player... He will get drafted really high (#5-10 OA in all likelihood) because those don't stay available for a long time.

Our pick will likely be closer to #10 than to #4 unless we win the lottery.
Im not sure. Habs are playing well lately, but the schedule until the end of January is really brutal. We have done well tanking in the last few years, I think we do it again and finish somewhere in the top 5. Evans, Armia, Dvo, and Savard will be traded at some point, which will signal to the team that we are done for the year.
