Here's a photo of Trotz scouting another young forward prospect:

McKenzie's mid-season ranking:

Matthew Schaefer a unanimous No. 1 in Bob McKenzie's Mid-season NHL Draft Ranking | TSN

Unexpectedly, a strong group at the top of the draft followed by weak depth. Not much talent after the top-seven. Offensive talent at least.

"One scout went so far as to say a lot of the players who will be drafted in the bottom half of the first round would in prior years be better suited to being second-round picks."

For our pick, im still sitting around
Hagens
Misa
Frondell
McQueen

If we fall too far back
Smith, Hensler, Mrtka

For Tampa and Vegas picks,
Fiddler, Boumedienne at D
Ravensbergen at G
Moore or Wozniak at forward

If we end up at around 5-8 overall here’s my board

1. Anton Frondell
2.Roger Mcqueen
3.Caleb Desnoyers
4. Viktor Eklund
5.Lynden Lakovic (who could be a 2nd half riser, 6ft 4, great skater , offensive dynamo . Only downside is that he plays a finesse, not power game)

HM: Carter Bear, Justin Carbonneau, Ivan Ryabkin

O'Brien too. He is a riser and would be viable choice in top 10. He isn't as polished as Desnoyers, but maybe has more talent.

Mcqueen scares me. Back injuries are no joke.
O'Brien sounds a little more like Johansen than O'Reilly to me? But honestly, if we get a chance at a decent-sized center who is ranked anywhere in the top-15, I think we have to jump on that.

We should take a C almost no matter what? I don't think in this draft there is really any kind of roadmap that says there are going to be crazy-good players at 11ish that clearly beat any C options. I mean, who knows, you can always watch for surprise faller. But O'Brien seems like a legit option. :dunno:

I wasn’t here for RyJo days, but I do see a bit of Robert Thomas in O’Brien. I’ve been watching good bit of Brantford to see Jiricek and O’Brien keeps catching my eye.

Are any of the centers located in the 10-15 area projected to be better than what we have in Svechkov, Edstrom, Surin, and Nilsson? If not, id rather get one of the dmen with size to help fill that need. We dont really have much of a pipeline there either. If there is one then that is still an area of need and we can use the later 1sts on dmen.

Wonder if we can make a package to get another in that 10-15 range or pick up another 1st round pick with a deadline trade.

The only centers who project to be better look to go in the top 10 or so- Hagens, Misa, Frondell perhaps, Desnoyers likely, O'Brien maybe. Beyond that I don't see any centers that look as promising as what we have in the system already (maybe Cootes, but he is a bit undersized for a center and may end up on wing).

There are some interesting D who could be in that range too, Smith likely goes top 10 and Mrtka and Hensler might too. AItcheson is interesting in teens. A guy I like in mid 1st (he is rawer than these but has great size/skating combo for a RHD and I think top 4 upside) is the Nashville-born Blake Fiddler. I can't imagine Preds have drafted too many local kids, so I have to think that would hold some additional appeal.
