Oh we're gonna Legwand whoever we pick. Only after losing the lottery of course.
Wasn't necessarily trying to imply we'd win the lottery. We could get our Yakupov with the 2nd or 3rd pick.

Legwand actually stuck around for a long time. Given our recent creative approach to flexing over other teams with prospect development, I'm sort of skeptical we'd Legwand anyone. Even if the other 31 teams insisted we keep him.

I was referring more to our only top 2 pick topping out as a defensive specialist 50 pointer but point taken.

I'm not even entertaining myself to the idea that we would get a top-ten pick at this draft, let alone a top-five one.

There's still a bunch of trash teams in the league like SJS, CHI, MTL, ANA, UTA, PIT, DET and CBJ. I can't see us being below any of those teams come the end of the season no matter how bad we have looked this far.

I can but it is gonna require Saros to hit a slump because so far he is keepin us afloat.

Yeah, we're likely to end up in the mushy middle, but there's gotta be something to look forward to.

It's just I've seen this for a couple of years now. We were trash last year to start as well. Hynes' last year we were bottom-feeders until the kids and Saros saved our bacon.

That and this team possibly cannot be this bad going forward. People need to remember the 82 game season is a marathon, not a sprint.

I don't really see why we can't be this bad moving forward. Splitting the season in half we've actually gotten less points in the last 11 games than we have in the first 11 games. In the past a big contributor to our slow starts has been Saros struggling too but he's been great this year and doesn't have much room to play better. I wouldn't be shocked if we got it together enough to end up 15-20th in the league versus the cellar but I don't think its a foregone conclusion either.

Look, I'm not saying we'll make the playoffs, either. But there's still a bunch of teams in the league in the real "tank-mode" whereas we're trying to be competitive the whole year (or at least I'll assume so, after the team spent $108M in the off-season trying to get better). I don't think that mindset can carry us to a top-five/ten pick in the end.

Sure but we’ve been trying to be competitive to this point and it hasn’t gotten us anywhere and we’ve actually gotten worse in some ways as the season has gone on. Sure we might improve as the season goes on based on us trying to compete but I’m not sure that just because we’re trying means it’ll actually happen at any point. Especially since it seems Bruno’s seat isn’t even warm at all.

The delicious irony I think is that we're probably going to get better precisely when Barry/Bruno "throw in the towel" and stop trying to compete. At that point, the kids step in, their time/responsibility ramps up, some of the veterans and tweeners get dialed back a bit, and... it's going to be like that stretch run under Hynes when the youth brigade took over during the injury crisis. The team is actually going to get better when it happens. And probably just like before, the coach & GM aren't going to recognize why.
