2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

I’m starting to come around a bit on Reschny. The production speaks for itself, although the occasional dropoff at international competition is cause for some concern. But from what I’ve seen, he’s around the net and creating for himself a lot more than I expected. He’s very good at manipulating space, and finding seams between defenders from anywhere/everywhere. I wouldn’t call him a defensive stalwart, but he’s engaged and you can tell he cares about all 200 feet. He’s surprisingly good on the dot: 56% last season.

If we take him at 19, I’ll get why. I still think his size makes him less attractive than some others, but I’m starting to see the appeal
Glad you’re coming around on Reschny but help me understand what you’re talking about regarding a drop off in international competition. He tied for the lead in scoring for Canada at the Hlinka-Gretzky (more points than McKenna, Schaefer and Desnoyers) and in the 5 games he played at the U18s he was the leading scorer for Canada there too. The 2 games he missed (because he was still playing in the WHL playoffs) were routs over Slovakia and Latvia. Cootes scored 6 of his 12 pts in the tourney in those 2 games. Martin scored 4 of his 11 in those 2 games. I have no doubt that had Reschny played in those 2 games he would’ve padded his stats too.

Game 5 of the OHL Championship is on NHL Network at 6pm tonight. London up 3 games to 1 so they can win it at home tonight.

Henry Brzustewicz is on London if you have interest from a 2025 draft perspective.

Or just watch because it’s two absolutely loaded rosters.

Yeah, it’s less about how much he scored and more about when. I just didn’t like some of his games. But, I tend to think of junior tourneys as the kinds of things that don’t matter unless they do. If that makes sense. I’m not going to completely sink a guy for having a couple of off nights, but if he stinks against the best competition, or he flat out dominates, it’s noteworthy.

The WHL is a tough league, and what I’ve seen of Reschny there was encouraging. Better than I was expecting to see, for sure. So that holds the most weight, and the tourney stuff is something that may or may not ultimately matter.

Elite Prospects lists him as 5'10"and 187 lbs. That isn't that small. And he could still grow.
I'm more concerned as to whether he projects as a winger or a centre. If it is the former, I am much less interested.

I’m guessing wherever he ends up, he probably starts on the wing. The two reasons I think he can potentially stick at center tho: he is not a perimeter player, and he’s surprisingly good on the dot already. I’d feel a lot better if he could play at ~200lbs without losing his foot speed though.

There a realistic chance of signing Ekblad? If not … whether it’s Power or not, trade Kyrou for a top-four d’man and then sign Bennett or Ehlers. Krug is done and Leddy & Suter stink.

I think everyone may be sleeping on Vaclav Nestrasil. I think a lot is said about him earlier in the season is not true about him now. He was a very key player anddefensive component for Muskegon winning the Clark cup in the USHL. He was nearly a point a game player in the playoffs. He’s an excellent skater and isn’t afraid to hit. He looked every bit the part of a playoff performer and he will probably end up being 6’6”. He is going to Massachusetts, so he will have time to marinate and improve his game. Depending on how empty the draft board is, that is a component we don’t have in our prospect pool. He looks to have enough speed to play center and playmaking ability.

Don't know if everyone is sleeping on Nestrasil, as he has been really playing well since before March. I think he is a first round pick for sure with a ton of potential. If he fills out his frame, which he should do, I would have no problem with him at #19. I think he has top 6 potential and other draft picks suggested, in and around that slot, might be safe 3rd liners but don't have the future projection like Vaclav. His size and great skating ability would be ideal. Totally sold on him.

Extremely interested in this Braeden Cootes kid. Feels like i'm watching Robert Thomas 2.0(as a prospect). A little undersized and not an elite shooter/goalscorer, which is why he's outside the top 15. But Great puck control, high end smarts, vision/playmaking ability, not the fastest straight ahead but a very efficient elusive and strong skater with a nice compete level/motor on loose pucks. All the traits that i thought thomas had and would translate to the next level, I see in Cootes so far, obviously I haven't watched him a ton but in my viewings he's been super impressive.

I’ve got a good feeling about Cootes as well. Button released a new ranking with him and Gastrin right around the Blues pick:

^^^list is showing Cootes as 6’3, but thought he was closer to 6’…?

Yeah I thought he was smaller than that too lol

I’m gonna watch him some more. If we don’t go D, this kid will be extremely high on my list

I think that is misprint. Everyone else lists him at 6’.

Great scouting work by us.

When Armstrong calls for advice just before draft day let's have a consensus choice to give him.

The Blues should definitely take Ivan Ryabkin if he's there at 19. He was a top 5 pick preseason. Who knows what really happened in Russia this year but I do know that Russia gets very punitive with players who don't show interest in staying for at least a few years post draft. I think that maybe the case with Ryabkin.
