2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

I am wondering about

Cole Reschny

He had a great year he is on the smaller side but they think he will stay at center. When asked who he models his game after he said Brayden Schenn. He is more of a passer than shooter. In 11 playoff games he had 25 points in the whl.
Honestly, I think he should be ranked closer to 10 than 20. Yeah, he’s only 5’10” but I don’t see him all too dissimilar to Catton and Benson from the last 2 drafts. I prefer players with size but at pick 19, I’d probably jump at a player that reminds me a lot of a 17 yr old Jaden Schwartz.

I've been super impressed by him. Spokane has Catton, who was top 10 pick a year ago, and Reschny looked the far more impactful player. Spokane won in a tight 6 game series, as Reschny was nearly a 1-man team. Excited to see what he does at U18 on team with other top talents.

Completely agree. He strikes me as a Benson who actually plays center.

Domi is good comp. I think Reschny can be better than him, but if you got Domi at 19 that is a win.
I admittedly don’t have a lot of memory of Domi as a prospect but I’d have to agree Reschny seems more skilled. But there’s not a lot of 5’10” Cs in the league so not a lot of comp options. Domi, Rossi and…Point? But if I truly thought he’d likely be the next Brayden Point I’d say he should be in consideration for 1st overall.

His skating is average but pretty much every other aspect of his game is above average. Just a really smart, skilled player. I hope he stays ranked about where he is currently but with his playoffs, I bet he rises. The word is out now. I bet he does very well at the U18s too. Wonder if he’ll be in the lineup for Canada tomorrow. I’d guess yes as he just has to get to Texas, not somewhere in Europe.

Side note: his teammate Verhoeff was also a big add for Canada. He might end up being the first d-man off the board for the 2026 draft.

I haven’t been as impressed with Verhoeff. Seems a bit too Dion Phaneuffy for me.

I moved to a city where we don’t know anyone and my wife typically is ready for bed by 9. I’ve been watching lots of WHL playoffs on Victory +. Reschney has been a revelation. He became must watch tv, particularly after our guys were out. That said, McKenna is on a whole different level.

Oh, he’s insane. Now here’s a question. Who was better in their 17 year old season in the Dub - McKenna or Bedard?

I know we have a glutton of LHD. But Aitcheson seems like such a nice pick if he’s on the board for us. Very Physical, mobile, big and talented offensively. Does he have decision making concerns? Why isn’t a player of this makeup ranked top 10. Haven’t studied his game enough yet.

I don’t think Dallas is complaining about Harley or Bichsel when they already had Heiskanen and Lindell

I really want to see him compete in the U 18. I see a lot of Cristall, Rattie Benson and I’m not sure if that game will translate. I need to see him play better against faster players/tighter spaces and the U 18s would be a good place for that to happen. I have him in my second round and don’t think he’ll stay at center.

I wasn’t a fan of Benson in his draft year, and I’m still not a fan. I don’t think he’s a top six on a winning team. I feel like we had this conversation a few years ago ha ha.

I’ve been trying to decide all year if he is Scott Stevens, or Barrett Jackman as a comparable. I wanted both players in their draft year. I seem to think he steers more towards the latter or maybe somewhere in between. I just think there will still be some good centers on the board we should take. I would not be upset with the pic though, but I don’t think we need him. He would definitely be a fun player.

I do recall that convo from 2 years ago! I simply assumed you reconsidered your opinion after Benson made the NHL as an 18 year old but I guess not lol. That said, I respect that you’re strong in your convictions. I think Benson is going to definitely be a top-6 winger for a good chunk of his career but I’m not sure I agree with how Buffalo has handled him. He was good enough defensively to make an aimless Sabres team at age 18 and 19 but not sure that was really what was best for his longterm development. Hopefully that didn’t stunt his offensive potential as he’s a very smart player. What is it you see/don’t see in Benson that makes you think he can’t be top-6 on a winning team?

I’m really looking forward to seeing how Reschny stacks up against the best at the U18s too. Although the field seems a little weaker this year and games against Latvia, Norway etc tend to not tell you much but the QFs and beyond are almost always fantastic in these tourneys. I’ll be honest, I don’t see the Cristall comp. I recall having concerns with Cristall in his draft year, especially after he was bad at the U18s. Super talented but also some serious flaws in his game. He’s either going to be a star or a bust. Good 2nd round gamble by the Caps though. What specifically about Reschny’s game makes you question his NHL potential?

If he was truly Stevens caliber then he’d be right there with Schaefer…and he’s not.

I really like Aitcheson but that’s also why I wanted to see that slewfooting play a couple nights ago. Did his theatrics alter your view of him at all?

I think Jackman is a solid comp. He has a good combo of defensive ability, snarl and adds some offense too - probably a bit more than Jackman did. But he’s also among the oldest of this class (less than 2 weeks younger than Lukas Fischer for example) so I have a hard time placing him and estimating what his future development might look like. I’ve got him pretty easily in my top-15 but not sure he’d be my ideal pick. I don’t believe in drafting for need in the 1st round but damn do we already have a lot of similar LD prospects already. He might be the best of the bunch though so who knows. If he’s the clear BPA, then I’d go for him but as of now, I see a pretty mushy 10-20 group that I value pretty evenly so for that, I’d probably go for a different player that fits the organizational need better. Intriguing player though and love the intangibles he brings to the table.

I don’t see a scenario where he is clear bpa at our pick. I don’t think his offense translates, he isn’t great in transition, and he isn’t huge. I think he can be potentially good 4/5 lhd with some snarl, but that isn’t something we are in need of so I think there will be better options for us. If we take lhd, Boumedienne or Reid would be my preference.

I don’t see Hensler being there. I like him as a pick. How has Cootes looked with linemates in the U18s? Also watching a few Swedes closely.

My reasoning, for the comparison is the player has a lot of dynamic tools, but a good skate tool is not one of them. All three of these players were average skaters at best. With their lack of size, it is just a no draft early for me no matter how good their junior numbers are. For me to be interested in a player with below average size, I’m looking for a plus skating tool to be interested in the first round. Cameron Schmidt and Cullen Potter come to mind in this draft. That’s just my own personal thinking right or wrong.

Fair enough. You wouldn’t be the first to basically require plus speed for any undersized player.

My impression is you’re a bit of a size queen so I’m a bit surprised to see you even mention Schmidt given he’s 5’7”. But I guess we each have our preferences and lines we won’t cross. I think you and I might have a few different things we look for in prospects but at the same time, I’ve always highly respected your opinion. Thanks for sharing it.

Currently watching Canada-Latvia but no Reschny. I read earlier today that he and Verhoeff arrived in Dallas this morning but I guess they’re going to get them into the next game.

Frondell is joining Team Sweden. The Swedes were probably already the favorites IMO but buckle up as now they definitely are. His Allsvenskan team just won promotion up to the SHL next season so he’s available now.

Thought O’Brrien would be there? Who else is yet to join?

Noticed that Blues legend Cory Stillman is Canada coach.

The roster limit for IIHF tourneys is 22 skaters and 3 goalies. Looking at Canada’s current roster, they now have 20 skaters (13F, 7D) and 2 goalies. You can dress 20 skaters and 2 goalies for each game but you’re allowed to have a few extras. So unless I’m missing something, they still have room to add guys if they want to.

Canada played with only 10 forwards in their first game, a 9-2 win over Slovakia. Clearly they knew reinforcements would be coming soon so they purposely left a handful of roster spots open.
